Furious at 99.5 Kiss and their Politics!
I am a huge fan of local ORIGINAL rock music. In fact, I try to follow up as much as possible. Recently, I had the chance to go watch the Battle of the Bands. Although I had never heard of Seven Perfect 7, I was immediately blown away with their music and their performance. To see these guys play was like watching a concert. As I knew they would, they WON. Hoping that 99.5 Kiss would appreciate the originality of local ORIGINAL rock music, I stayed tuned to listen for their name implimented in the Oyster Bake and having the opportunity to Open for Everclear and Alterbridge. To my "surprise" I heard Kiss tonight advertising Drive with the National Acts. I have heard of Drive, and yes, there is no denying their ability to play Covers, but to not Plug the Band that WON the 99.5 kISS Battle in their commercial really made me think of their backing to ORIGINAL music. I only hope to continue listening to Kiss and here their redemption. Weather it be Seven Perfect 7 or any other original rock band that wins in the future. Kiss needs to work on staying true. And that is why I am furious of the politics involved. Comment if you will! |

Doesn't surprise me a bit. KISS is in no way about local original music. They are a Clear Channel corporate rock station, with playlists dictated by the head honchos and the record labels. Any events they are affiliated with or in charge of are about making money, gaining listeners, etc., not promoting local talent...or really any talent...they are not concerned with talent, they are concerned with numbers. I miss the days of the AOR (album-oriented rock) stations, which were more about introducing new cool music and playing what listeners wanted to hear, and less about playing what corporations want to have pushed in the markets. If I could have my own radio station, it would have DJ's who were VERY knowledgeable about music and played quality music PLUS requests. And they would play rock music from all the decades of rock music, without the dividing line of classic vs. modern. Cuz I don't know many rockers who can't enjoy good rock music from any era, as long as it's good quality (which doesn't always mean the most popular). |

For the record, I believe 99.5 KISS is owned by COX Radio. I haven't heard any of the mentioned Oyster Bake ads yet. Perhaps they were produced before Seven Perfect won the contest? Hopefully, they will start running some spots that mentions them because I agree, they should be listed since they are playing immediately before the headliners. |

Sorry, you're right, Nathan, it's Cox Radio. Still, same deal...big corporation, owns tons of stations all around the country. |

Yeah...can't say that I wasnt a bit dissapointed when we didnt here our name. No worries though. Nathan is probably right, they may have made the spot before the win. Either way, anybody who goes to listen to music, will leave the night knowing who we are. I have no doubt about that. Thanks for your concern Cel, and I am glad that you follow local original rock. They are plenty of great bands in this town. Hope to see you at Oyster Bake! |

Seriously, all it takes is recording the name of your band and sliding it into the recorded commercial... Takes a whopping two minutes. U guys in Seven Perfect won it (thank GOD), and you deserve all of the recognition that should go with winning. Can't wait to gig with you fellas next month. Peace. |

Unfortunately commercial radio's first priority and concern is not the local music scene they broadcast to. That's why we also need to support our locally run stations like KSYM (90.1). |

Independently owned radio stations are the way to go. All of the other, Corporate, radio stations have song lists that they must "live and die" by. Here in Houston we also have 90.1, however, here it's KPFT and it's the shit. Any and ALL genres of music are incorporated in their play list. Jack FM is killing music as far as I'm concerned. By the way, bad ass job to SEVEN PERFECT and all of the other bands that participated in the KISS Battle of the Bands!!! Looking forward to hanging out with yous guys, sometime. PEACE!!

It seems like everyone is anti-kiss and whatnot, but at least they gave bands the opportunity to play at oyster bake and open up for a headlining band. (Everclear to be exact) That deserves some type of respect at least. |

Hold on a minute here Joel. With all respect, I think it's VERY important that we acknowledge that being PRO-anything (locally owned music stations, busninesses, etc...) does not make you ANTI-something else. Once we divide ourselves that way, we follow the path to bickering and then nothing productive will come from these dialogues. This online community and others like it can and already ARE helping to make the local music scene better, stronger, and more inclusive. I would hate for it to be dismissed as a bunch of people complaining and whining about the big bad corporate radio stations. We want to expand on the systems already in place...take the good parts and add, update, improve on the things that don't work. Sound goood? Nathan |

Yes. Nathan, I may sometimes sound like I'm hating on KISS, but I listen to KISS all the time. They've been around forever, that's my station. But that doesn't mean that I can't spot the areas in which they could improve. I would like to see more variety and more daring in their programming, as well as more support of local music. I think the only local band that I have heard on KISS on any kind of regular basis was when, for a while, they had that Dog Men Poets' song "Anthem" in their regular rotation. And that was several years ago. I would just respect them more if they would play more music based on its quality, rather than based on how popular it is nationwide, you know? |

This is why I listen to everything. No one radio station has it right. I like original music, you just can't get rock originals around here. I listen to 92.5. It's not rock, but the lyrics are catchy, and they're all from Texas. |

Band had a chick singer, I think Scottie knows them cuz he was talking to the bass player before the show. I don't know the name of the band. I follow original music myself. |

Probably was Bliss. I know that they were going to be on the 96.1 stage. And they do kick the booty.

The Worx had a GREAT time on the Main Stage @ The Oyster Bake last Friday opening up for Eddie Money. It was awesome seeing over 10,0000 screaming rockers all at once. San Antonio knows how to put on a party !! We'll be at the St. Luke's Fiesta Finale on Sunday April 26th (12:30 - 2:00 p.m.). Peace Out !! |

Scott -- and what does that have to do with what plays at KISS? |

J.A.R., It had nothing to do with KISS. Apparently I hit a nerve with you. It amazes me that people who only use their initials when replying on a forum are the ones who have to give negative responses. Were you in one of the bands that didn't get to play at the Oyster Bake? If so, there's always next year. It is a shame though that the bands who won the competion didn't receive more advertising for it. Peace Out !! |

"No. No. No. I feel it's like, it's more like going, going to a, a national park or something. And there's, you know, they preserve the moose. And that's, that's my childhood up there on stage. That moose, you know. "

It's more like the soldier who battles through the night, wonderin if night has stopped to cry. He'll fight the night and win in the morning....and to me....that is the essence of Rock N Roll. And by the way, I am very surprised with San Antonio's Original scene. It's without a doubt getting better and better every year. Oyster Baked rocked!

Scott: No, it's just that this thread was about a completely different topic, and it looked like you came in to pat yourself on the back and advertise a future gig during Fiesta. There are other threads, several in fact, that deal with those topics. And I've played at the Bake in two different bands, so I don't see myself as jealous of you, thanks. No nerves hit there, but thanks for playing! And back to topic, there simply aren't enough independent radio stations in San Antonio to really give local bands their due. KSYM is a great little station, but too few people can pick it up. KISS is the 800-pound gorilla in SA! |
