Re: Soya Bran
Matt I must admit I've never tried to find soya bran online. I've always bought it from a bricks and mortar shop. It does seem to be harder to find these days than when the recipes were first developed. I've found it at various times in Holland and Barrett and independent health food shops, then not seen it for ages. I saw it at my local H&B a few weeks ago again, though! (I'm in Oxfordshire, UK). However, there are lots of substitutes if you can't find a reliable source of supply. For instance, rice bran or even wheat bran (as long as you're OK with wheat!) Other substitutes are flax meal or sprouted flax powder, both of which are available in the big supermarkets. I find sprouted flax powder particularly useful to have as a storecupboard item, as it doesn't need to be kept in the fridge like flax meal. In most recipes, the soya bran is really only there to help reduce the carb count of the bakemix, so you could also simply leave it out and add a little more of the other dry ingredients - in most cases it wouldn't make that much difference to the overall carb count anyway. If you want further help with substituting, let me know which specific recipes you're trying out, and I'll do my best to suggest what might be best in each case. Regards Jackie |
