diabetes and low carbs
My 70-year-old father is diabetic, has high blood pressure, high cholestorol and had a stroke about 10 years ago. He is about 175 pounds overweight. How can he adapt the low-carb diet to meet his needs? |

Re: diabetes and low carbs
Peggy Obviously I don't know your father's medical circumstances and am not a medical person so I am not giving advice of any kind. But what I can say is that there is a growing body of opinion that diabetics, especially type II, do better on a low carb diet. Unfortunately, most of the national diabetes associations still believe in the relatively high-carb diet that they have advised for the last few decades. When you talk about 'adapting' the diet to suit your father's needs, I presume you're referring to your father's blood pressure and high cholesterol, which people commonly think would be made worse by a low carb diet (ie the low carb = high fat = heart disease myth). On the contrary, there are many people whose blood pressure and cholesterol etc have significantly improved on a low carb diet, despite a high level of fat ('good' fats) in their diet. Much of this will no doubt be explained in Dr Atkins' next book (on the use of low carb diets in diabetes) which he was writing when he died and which I understand is soon to be published. |
