Can you help? I don't know where I'm going wrong

Hello all,

Hope you can help because I've ran out of solutions!
I'm on the induction phase of Atkins and keen to lose a stone (currently 9stone). Today is my 8th day and I haven't seem any difference on the scales. The funny thing is that I seem to be losing inches -- just not pounds! I've tested my keotones and I'm at the highest level, so I am burning fat - somehow. I'm walking up to 2 miles a day and execising 3-4 times a week.

My menu seems to be ok: breakfast - omlettes, lunch - tuna or ham salad, dinner - varies, but typical is steak and blue cheese or roast chicken with salad, etc

Admittedly, I've yo-yo'd a bit with Atkins - the first time I did Atkins was July 2004 (before getting married) an I lost 12lbs in two weeks.

I can't understand why it's stopped working - is it possible that my body is storing carbs because it knows what I'm up to?? What am I doing wrong and how can I break out of this?

Hope you can help me
Thanks
Bekah

Hi Bekah...

If you are the darkest color on your ketostix, it means that you are not drinking enough. How much water do you drink each day?
If you don't drink enough, your body will store water and other fluids, and that may be why you are not losing.

Hi Bekah

I agree that it's frustrating not to see a result on the scales, but if you're losing inches, that's great! It's a well-known phenomenon amongst low carbers that we often see improvement with the tape measure when the scales just stay the same! There are two aspects to this. One is that muscle is denser than fat (some people think of it as muscle weighing heavier than fat but it's more that the same weight of muscle fits into a smaller space than the same weight of fat. So the tape measure shows inch loss, while the scales may not show a loss. As you're exercising more, I'd say you're probably replacing fat with muscle - which is good news!

The other possibility relates to water retention in your fat cells. This is a bit more of a theory than proven fact I think, but it is thought that when you lose fat, your fat cells don't like being shrunk. (Unfortunately you can't get rid of them, you can only shrink them). So they take up extra water to maintain their size for a while, until your body adjusts to the new situation. I've read that it may take up to a couple of months sometimes for your body to decide to release this water in the fat cells.

If you had said you weren't getting results with the tape measure either, then that's a bit more tricky, and I'd be suggesting conditions that can block weight loss, such as yeast overgrowth (candida), or not taking in enough calories, which can put your body into 'starvation mode'. But it looks like your 'problem' is muscle development/water retention as described above, and as you can see, it's not really a problem at all, although you may have to be a bit patient.

Why not give it another couple of weeks or so, to see what happens?

Best low carbing wishes

Jackie
