Sugar Free Sweets - Should I?
I have been doing Atkins for about 3 weeks now but have only lost 4 pounds. I did Atkins once before and the weight literally fell off but this time it just doesn't seem to want to budge. The only thing I can think I'm doing different is that I've bought some sugar free sweets (+ a sugar free nutella type spread) from a low carb online store. I'm eating maybe 2 sweets a day and the odd teaspoon full of SF nutella. Is it OK to eat these things? I don't really understand what polyols are/do and whether they affect the atkins diet. NB - I have been ketonic throughout the 3 weeks. Thanks in advance! |

Re: Sugar Free Sweets - Should I?
Kate Sorry for the delay in response! Losing four pounds is more than a lot of people can lose however hard they try in 3 weeks, so don't be too despondent! It may be that this time, you didn't start the diet with your glycogen stores full (it's the emptying of the glycogen stores, with the resultant release of water, that is responsible for many people losing a large number of pounds in the first week of the Atkins Diet). It's also an unfortunate fact that diets become harder and less effective the more times you go on one - the 'yo-yo diet' syndrome. As far as polyols are concerned, opinion is divided about how useful they are for low carbers. In theory they help because they stimulate a lower insulin release than the sugar they replace. However, people vary in how much of a given polyol they digest, which in turn affects blood sugar levels and insulin release. However, you say you've been in ketosis throughout, so it doesn't sound as if the carbs in the polyols is the problem. Polyols may be able to be called 'sugar-free', but they still contain calories as well as carbs, so they're not 'free foods'. Having said that, the amounts you're eating are small, so it seems unlikely that they are making much difference to your daily calorie intake either. But is it possible that the total calories you are having per day generally are not leaving you with a calorie deficit? Although on Atkins you count carbs not calories, the calories do still matter.
