Johnson: rock hard!
Former WWE wrestler Dwayne Johnson told Soccer AM why his first love was football... American football that is!
Johnson who was known as The Rock during his eight year association with the WWE is now a successful actor but revealed if it hadn't been for a bad injury, his life would most likely have taken a very different path.
"It was always my first choice," he explained. "I'd play down at University in Miami, where we won a national championship and I just love the game of football, in fact I just love athletics period.
"I wanted to do that but then I got hurt, but these things happen in life and you can't regret anything.
"I realised I wanted to close that chapter in my life and that's when I moved on into wrestling and from wrestling I got into acting."
Johnson of course is not the first professional wrestler to leave the sport in pursuit of a career in Hollywood, but while Hulk Hogan and Rowdy Roddy Piper were largely unsuccessful, Johnson appears to have made a successful transition.
"It probably comes down to material," he said. You always search for good material and you try and make the best decisions and I was fortunate to get some good material handed my way.
"With the other guys in the past I think for them, with the types of movie they made, they were happy with that material, whereas I knew I wanted to be a good actor.
"In order to become a good actor you've got to study and you have to put in your time and in doing so I was able to get good material, good directors and good actors to work with me... and the fact that I'm just much more handsome than them!"
Having already starred in a number of blockbusters, Johnson's latest movie The Game Plan has already grossed over a $100 million in the US and his rise to stardom as an actor looks set to continue.
"We had great success back in the US and as a matter of fact it was number one (in the box office charts) two weekends in a row."
"The movie is about an America footballer who literally has everything and he finds true love in the form of an eight year old girl who calls him daddy, and it winds up being his daughter.
"I love the story and it really connected with me the first time I heard it because I'm a proud daddy myself. I also wanted to do a comedy too because I'd been doing a lot of action films." |
