Regal Zonophone 2
Fly On Strangewings The Anthology (3CD)
by Marian Segal & Jade
Released: 25th August 2017
Details
In the pantheon of rare Folk Rock albums from the genre’s golden era of the early Seventies,FLY ON STRANGEWINGS by Jade is a bona fide classic.
Largely ignored on its release on DJM in1970, the album is now widely acclaimed, which has led collectors and connoisseurs toconsider Jade’s main singer and songwriter, Marian Segal, as a much-overlooked talent.
FLY ON STRANGEWINGS is now treated to a deluxe 3-CD edition which finally tells the full storyof Marian Segal’s musical career. Compiled and annotated with Marian’s involvement, thisnew package offers a second disc of early recordings of Marian with fellow Jade member DaveWaite, while Disc Three brings the story more up-to-date with solo and Marian Segal Bandrecordings.
Disc One re-presents the classic Fly On Strangewings album with seven contemporaneousbonus tracks, two of which are previously unissued.
Before becoming Jade, Dave Waite and Marian (or Marianne) Segal were a duo, playing theuniversity circuit and in London clubs at the height of the Swinging London era. Their musicwas a fusion of British and American folk, but already contained many original elements, including superlative vocals, in the vein of Sandy Denny and The Strawbs. This period isremembered on Disc Two, recordings which have been out of print for a decade. Four tracksare previously unissued.
Disc Three includes two historic mid-70s recordings with Jeff Wayne (of War of The Worldsfame).
The albums include a host of session talent from the 1970s including Dave Mattacks, HerbieFlowers, Clem Cattini, Pete Sears, John Wetton, Chris Spedding and Terry Cox as well assweeping string arrangements by Phil Dennys (Rodriguez).

I always loved Jade (I have both a Korean and a Japanese mini LP CD of it), never much liked the acoustic folkie stuff MS did though which seems to comprise the other two discs in this set. There has been a double CD set in the past that had most of the 2nd disc on it as well.
There's a 7 CD box set of Pentangle albums due soon as well not to mention a big old box of Fairport Convention discs from across the years.
I am rather more attracted to the upcoming three disc clam box set:
'Milk Of The Tree: An Anthology Of Female Vocal Folk & Singer-Songwriters: 1966-73'
I expect there's a lot that's been reissued before but I like the look and the mix of it.

The female 3 Cds looks pretty good, the only little complaint to me is the 2 tracks by Carolanne Pegg/Mr.Fox. I would have put only one of the two, got instead an Eclection track sung by Kerrilee Male and a Dorris Henderson song on her own
Thanks for that lads,
Silver Jade (as they were known in the USA) Lps are still quite cheap and I managed to pick up one still in shrink recently for a good price.
