Iles Chagos Islands: Forum

Dans cette section, toutes les lettres provenant des Chagossiens ou d'autres personnes voulant parler du problème chagossien seront les bienvenues. Il y a quelques règles à respecter toutefois:

  1. Les lettres anonymes ne seront pas publiées.

Lettres:

In this section, all the letters coming from Chagossians or other people wanting to speak about the Chagossian problem will be most welcome. However there are some guidelines to follow :

  1. Anonymous letters will not be published.
  2. The authors are held responsible for their writings.
  3. The webmaster has the full right to keep or delete letters, no complaints please.
  4. No letter with abusive content or insults will be accepted. In the same way, if differences in opinion are welcome, all letters favouring division among Chagossians will not be kept. We are in favour of the unity of all Chagossians and any unpacking of dirty linen will be done elsewhere.
  5. The letters with an electronic format (e-mail,...) will have the highest priority, the typed letters will come next, and manuscripts and all letters having to be introduced manually into this forum will receive the lowest priority. This work will be carried out when time is available.

Re: Chagos

I sincerely share the concerns of all the people of Chagos. It's a shame to read about thier story and frustrations. A micheal More type of show is needed down that way. I have some good friends everywhere in the UK and US who can help in bringing the cry of these innocent people to the front line.I am presently trying to spread the news around. I come from Africa and actually knows what it means to be driven away from your ancestors or ancestrial grounds.Much courage to Mr Bancoult, Mr Andre Allen and most inportantly to the all the displaced people of chagos. I need more contacts down there to send mails can you help?

RE: Ac tion required,
As you well know Democracy is an illusion or should i say a facade, The reality is that those who acquire, either were corrupt in the first instance or become corrupt in the process.

It says that democracy means -- For the people; by the people; to the people.

The reality is that we have a sort of autocracy, which dispenses the charade of "a minimalist version of democracy" ie a plebosite(a partial democracy) Which acts as a pacifier to the citizens/subjects.
There is no real way to hold the authorities to account. As an individual with no power or no powerfull friends. you easily dismissed.
If you attain publicity and noteriety, and begin to pose a threat: The full apparatus of the State is used to bury you.
The conspiracy is complete because in the Western democracies people are satisfied with thier lot, your house, car and other luxuries.they have very little interest in how their government governs = which of course suits the Governments of the day fine.

The only way that the issue of the chagosians, will be taken seriously is if is in the headlines, in the media ; made into a public issue, day after day month after month- untill the issue is satisfactorily resolved.

Other steps -
taking the case to The European Courts of Human Rights - Again with full publicity

Making the case in the European Parliment

Pressing for UN intervention/ruling.

Someone making a Michael Moore type film
High profile Protest Rallies.
Seeking every opportunity to get the issued,
Question time,This week - anything

Getting Bob Geldolf, Bono involved or any other high profile person involved,

For those who believe that a lot of fuss is being made over a few people in a far away place many years ago - Would do well to read 1984.
If we allow it to happen once, it will happen again much closer to home.

In a more wider context, in Britain in particular --
The people should be become activised(no such word - i know!)and galvanised so that that Government of the day doesnt get an easy ride.
IF need be form a grass roots movement as per Labour movement at the begining of the last century
Call it the peoples Party; citizens of britain party! or what ever - THe Stalemate in Britsh Polictics and in Especially in American Politics is stiffling the citizenal growth of the respective countries.

The voice of ordinary people is a variable that has long been discarded in the History of Politcs.

Our Governments do as they please because the tennets of Democracy have being ignored by the powerful; but moreso because they have not been defended by the ordinary people.

PS Did this issue recieve mainstream attention in 2004. I like many others only heard about it when i watched dispatches on Thursday.
