Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

Steve Hillage - Free concert Hyde Park, London '73

Surprizingly good sound, considering. (But the cymbals sound like lotta knives being sharpened.)

Clive Bunker doin' marvellous job on the drums.
Excellent concert - Hurdy Gurdy Man & Its All Too Much.

Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

OLIVE-SAME

Here is a band only a Masterman would know.

'80s were the prog doldrums when prog ate its own ass.
Most all countries with the exception of Spain & Japan were producing dross. Spain & Japan were on delay from 70s, late-starters so the music was pretty good.
And this band is Japanese.

Female vocalist.

I can hear a spurt of mellotron. Curious that they had one but used it so sparingly. (Maybe sampled?)

Good crack.

Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

After someone's recommendation a while back (sorry, but I can't remember who it was... but I would like to say "Thank You!"), I recieved the Japanese import of Bobak, Jons, Malone 'Motherlight' yesterday, and I'm spinning it right now. Really happy with what I'm hearing so far... nice psych with a bit of a proggy touch, but not too much. Standouts for me are 'On a Meadow-Lea' and 'House of Many Windows'.

Jean Luc Ponty - On the Wings of Music

An earlier release by him just before he went full-tilt into proggy fusion.

Somehow, back in the day, this one slipped under Princiepoo's radar. I think I was fooled by the bland (non-proggy) coverart, thinking it to be a later lp (after his proggy period).
Well, I finally got it yesterday and have been listening today.
Its unexpectedly....excellent.

......
You might notice that -even though Wallace listens to a lot of fusion - Wallace does not put much up on this forum.

That's because Wallace knows something about youse which youse are not even fully aware youse-selves: some here are turned off by prog but they never admit that fusion would be even a greater turnoff to their poppy frame of mind. Whyso? Because fusion is mainly instrumental (poppers like lyrics) and fusion is almost always if not full-blown freeform, then improv-FEELING. (Poppers like structure, defined melodies and refrain.)

So then remember, when you say you hate prog, you really hate fusion more. (Because jazz requires more work on the listener's part than even does prog!)

How can one enjoy live jazz but not vinyl-jazz?

Does this go for hip-hoppery as well or butt-snorkel
homo-electrodisco?

Never knew there was a third lp.
And you know what? This is way better than the other two.(More hammond, less love lyric.)

Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

I'm currently working on a new compilation series for the U-Spaces group called 'Pop Sike Lyte'...
I've been sifting through 250+ potential candidates today (editing, normalizing, declicking etc.). Some very good stuff, some pretty okay and a few that - to be kind - suck pretty bad. But overall it's been an eye and ear opening experience listening to so many bands and songs that have been gathering dust for the last 40 years or so.

Should be areal treat when I get it finished (unless of course you're a Pwog Mastermon that is...)

Holy Crikey!
U-Spaces. Now there is a blast from the past.
They were likely my first initiation into popsike.Have two or three first-rate comps.

And 250!
These are relatively new artists mimicking the old, right?
(Certes not 250 olden days discoveries!)

How you get hold of all this material, Mark?

Gonna pare this all down to a single comp - say 25 tracks???

Aye Karney-boyo has this one. Love the cover art aswell..

Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

Been spinning:
Bob Downes Open Music-Electric City( a fusion of horn led jazz and prog rock, but imo more rock than jazz)

The Flow- Greatest Hits(this US group had no hits, from 1972,pretty decent hard rock with a few stoner things going on)

Van Der Graaf Generator-The least we can do is wave to each other(this is my fave album from them,i love the more pastoral and mellow parts on here)

Human Beinz-In Japan(Live album recorded and released in japan without the groups knowledge, good live album as live albums go,i dont usually enjoy most live recordings but this shows a harder side of this fine US group whos "Evolution" album is recommended)

Bread Love and Dreams-s/t(the first and imo the best album they did, from Edinburgh too, which kinda makes me smile)

The Alan Bown-Outward Bown(the new double cd of this fine uk pop and psych album in stereo and mono)

Graham Nash-Songs for Beginners(lovely and heartfelt first solo album by ex Hollies man,and CS&N member,a very good album but imo not as good as his fellow band members David Crosby "If i could only remember my name")

Well an eclectic listen ive had over the last few days, but very enjoyable!!Today im going to listen through the first box set of Electric Psychedelic Sitar Headswirlers"a fab collection of old and some newish songs.

Lp or cd, Phil?
If you got the UK-press lp, then you dont want it. Unlike Leutonian press, it didnt have the incredible "Theme One" track.

Send the UK -press to me.

N.P. :
JULIE DRISCOLL & BRIAN AUGER "JOOLS & BRIAN"

early Auger lp, considered mod period, organ sounds tinny-thin , so I figure at this point he didnt have a Hammond??

Awful "Duophonic" mix to "enrich irreplaceable mono". So then why did they duo-fy it with the emphasis on mainly one channel?

Your better to get the Auger "Mod Years" cd which improves the sound and cuts off most all of the dated vocal tracks with Driscoll.

The lp back cover notes praise the lp so much as to mis-name "Green Onions" as "Green Things".

Driscoll is a very beautiful woman, but...

...here are some (non-Driscoll) nips:

CLOUDS -"Live Helsinki, Finland 1970"

Proto-prog Scots trio of organ,bass,drums

I really like this music.

Sound is far from the best, but considering its 1970 amateur recording of lesser-known band in a stinky little club and wild Finn audience ("Yes sir, if you have not noticed, the shitter is over there.") it is remarkable

Beggar's Opera - Final Curtain

As it says.
For their swansong - well, who would have expected it from THEM: they suck dick full hog.

Love songs.
Finish it all off with the classical piece from the first lp. Only no Hammond (anywhere on the lp), cheese keys, disco drums.

You know, for what this lp is - homo dancemusic - its not bad.

Wot is Cool Aid Benefit like? Different styles? Any predominant? Thats all west-coast Canada, no?

Dunno...twacks loike "Lovin' Blues Baby" and
"Do Re Mi" do not inspire The Prince muchly.

.................
Christmas - Heritage
the cd sounds top! Liner notes say nothing of bonus tracks, but Wallace figures the last three are bonus - and what excellent tracks they are also.
Cd is something like 65 minutes long. This wasn't origionally a 2 lp set ,was it?

Wonder if the Spirit of Christmas "Lies to Live By" cd is now worth some sheckles. Its only been put to cd over a decade ago (by Laser's Edge).

Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

Cool Aid is pretty good. The CD edition has more track apparently. I could do without the 7 + minute poetry reading that is the last track on side 4. There's a certain CSN vibe on a number of tracks (it was 1970) but they're all quite good, some realtively mellow but no snooze fests. Better / harder tracks are by Black Snake (especially 'Catfish' - excellent guitar work in the first half - it's 10 mins long), Spring, Mother Tucker's Yellow Duck and Nancy (that's a group not a girl). One or two experiemental bits and pieces (again, it's 1970). It's also a set of songs all recorded in one take so 'live' in the studio, lacking any production values, but all very well delivered. I dig it anyway.

Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

hi paul whats the west coast natural gas album like would u recommend it

Email
Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

Hi Robbie,
I would definitely recommend it for the first 8 tracks (all 7 on side 1 and the first track on side 2). These are all band compositions. There's two versions of one of them called 'A Favor' which are not that different to each other, but all 8 of these tracks are excellent period US psych-rock tracks (they reminded me a bit of The Brain Police actually).

On Side two you get a radio commercial for Levis and a club ad from radio which are interesting but not essential. You also get a 4 track acetate of cover songs they did at what sounds like a somewhat earlier stage (Mr You're A Better Man Than I, Younger Girl, You make Me Feel So Good, He Was A Friend of Mine. These I think, are just fillers, they're nowhere as good as the other tracks, but I guess it makes a full document out of their output.

The sleeve is a nice orange gatefold with liners and an email interview with the band by the guy that started the U Spaces egroup in the USA. So overall I would say yes, buy it because those first 8 cuts are pretty hot and the rest whilst not as interesting are not unlistenable.

Re: NEW WOT U ARE LISTENING TO POST

Yeh i just got this cd the other day West Coast Natural Gas are very good imo,i cant really add much to Pauls post, yeh those 8 tracks are good,i only have 1 complaint,if youre buying this on cd,you'll find theres no liners or photos in a booklet, you have to play the cd in your PC to see the liners and stuff, but then i must say the liners are exhaustive and tell the story of this group along with posters and photos.I just like my liners to be in booklet form!!Gripe over!!Well worth getting Robbie!!
