Regal Zonophone 2
Loads of Jimi Hendrix, live recordings, I have a whole shelf full of them on CD, plus this:
Jimi Hendrix – The Complete PPX Studio Recordings SPV, 2000, 6 x CD box set – each 30 mins long). These are the recordings done with Curtis Knight at Ed Chalpin’s PPX studio mostly from 1967. Hendrix plays guitar, bass and keys with just Knight and a a drummer accompanying him. These recordings often get dissed or sneered at by Hendrix fans, I’m not quite sure why. Yes H was a sideman in Curtis Knight’s Squires before he got picked up by Chas Chandler, but Hendrix is a lot more on these recordings than a sideman, in fact, many of them have more in common with the funkier Band of Gypsys sound of 1970. Fabulous stuff and Hendrix sure knew how to throw down a fat, deep, funky bass loop, even if his keys playing was more rudimentary. I was absolutely bowled over by this set compared to what I expected. Even where Hendrix is just playing a basic rhythm pattern it fills the grooves with sound, check ‘How Would You Feel’ on Youtube for instance. I know a lot of these tunes have been recycled by Chalpin etc over the eyars but this little box puts them all in one place, pity it’s so scarce now.
Received but not yet played:
Velvet Underground – ‘Last VU 1971-3’ 4 x CD box Set, Captain Trips, Japan (c.2001 I think). Just a 1000 of these pressed up I believe. It’s 4 cds of live, post Lou Reed VU. It’ another set that gets panned, this time by VU fans because it only has Doug Yule and Mo Tucker on Discs 1 and 2 and only Doug Yule on 3 and 4 from the vintage line ups. However, I read Scott Charbeneau’s long review of this set (amongst a few others) somewhere (Amazon??) and it made me curious enough to take a punt on the Ex grade copy that was on Ebay UK (@£30), so thanks Scott. It looks good. OK, they aren’t gonna be what they were and I think by ’73 it was some kind of bar band that Yule was convinced to use the VU name for by a promoter. But it is a historical artefact / document and part of the VU story and also only a marginally available item, which all adds up to desirability.
Lastly - WICH (We Intend To Cause Havoc) 4 CD set on Now Again Records. Zambian 70s band, this set includes all their albums and a lots of liners and interviews. They play a western rock pallete of music styles with great guitar and melodies etc. You can hear samples on certainly Juno Records website. I got the set for just £16.75 on Amazon UK.
PM
Must continue with The Box -Van Der Graff Generator only played 1 disc so far due to being a bit depressed and ill with some problems great booklet included too.
just played grateful dead europe 72. not as psych as their earlier stuff but great none the less.
No big surpise here, but I've been listening to George Harrison stuff since I watched the documentary. Mostly "All Things Must Pass." I've listened to that Apricot CD that I think Paul Martin recommended (the Norwegian band), and various assorted singles including The Herd's "This Boy's Always Been True" and Gerry Marsden's "Gilbert Green". I've also been listenging to the Band. I've been enjoying Fleetwood Mac's "Kiln House" more than the first time I played it. It's definitely a bluesy album, but there's some nice songwriting on it as well that it took me a while to notice. Anything by Fleetwood Mac with Danny Kirwain's playing just kind of soars above somehow. SInce I'm recovering from a retinal detachment, I've found that jazz (Chet Baker Quartet, John Coltrane's Ballads, Coltrane and Ellington) are nice and soothing.
Oh, and "Giant on the Box" by Gentle Giant.
Interesting Joe,i really enjoy All things must Pass too,i always have wished The Beatles would've recorded more of George Harrisons songs as theres some tremendous stuff on Things must Pass, and not forgetting the fine Wonderwall soundtrack.Apricot ,can't think of seeing that post by Paul, anymore feedback on it?Is it psych or tasty 60s pop?Cheers Joe!!
The documentary on George Harrison really brings out how the whole expectation of being a Beatle was something he grew to not want, which may be why the albums after "All Things Must Pass" don't even have a very Beatles-y production, much less very Beatles-y songs. But you're right that "All Things Must Pass" is definitely an outlet for the songs the Beatles (John and Paul anyway) couldn't put on a Beatles album for one reason or another.
The Apricot CD is some recent "neo-psych" (I guess it would be called that) from a Norwegian group who know their Move, Idle Race, and Kaleidoscope evidently. A little bit like a Dukes of Stratosphear thing. Enjoyable. The CD is called "A Forestful of Threes."
Fresh Maggots. This album seems to improve with each listen and I remember being none too impressed when I first heard it many years ago. Grand Funk Railroad 'Live Album'- Heads down jammin' blues rock from 1970. One of the worst sounding albums I've ever heard- bootleg quality but a nice document.
I'm spinnin':
1. Lost & Found "Everybody's Here" IA Texass kina weak w. sub Roky screams doesn't really go anywhere
3. New York Dolls 1&2, 3,Nirvana "In Utero" a couple of strong songs never heard it after initial interest B-52's
Been working my way through the legit box set by African group Witch, theres some splendid stuff on here from the years 1972-77,dont let the years put you off as this is a good mix of garage, psych, pop and funky African rock of their final recordings, but the first 3 cds are real good,im not as enamoured with the 4th disc to honest, its not bad its just not clicked yet,i couldnt believe the rock bottom price of this attractive box set,got this for just over 16 quid, which comes with a booklet, from Amazon!!Well worth investigation!!Reading the booklet it becomes sad as theres only 1 surviving member left from this group, but if you're in the mood for something just a wee bit different, this could be it!!
Heres what ive been spinning too:
The Heatwave-Honeymelon Teapot-Dutch group covering the years 1967-69,nice little package a very informative booklet,i have to be honest and say on first hearing this i felt a little underwhelmed, but on its third airing its beginning to sink in,covering demos and unreleased rarities, which covers a range of music from fully formed punky action to more sedate demos and excursions into psych like territory.
Sir Douglas Quintet-+2(honky blues)This is from summer of 68,again i like this, not psych but a potpourri mix of blues, soul and Texmex rock,an accquired taste for some here i think, but it makes a good listen and a little change from listening to psych and garage all the time.
Rick Springfield-Beginnings-An album from ex Zoot member, originally from Australia but he made the trip to the states and landed a record deal, well imo not as good as the excellent Zoot sides and completely different music wise, this comes from 1972,sorta string laden pop/singer songwriter affair, the word i think of when listening to this is pleasant........whether thats a good thing,i'll leave that up to you,not exceptional by any means, but again i'll give this a chance and play it a few times before i pass final judgement.Well produced stuff.
Thirteenth Floor Elevators-The 4 albums box-I have the large box set that came out a couple of year ago,but this comes in a handy wee box containing the 4 albums and was mid price,so i couldn't resist its handiness, what can be said about this bunch that hasn't already been said??I personally find some of their tracks with that jug sound pretty grating, but theres no denying theres some fab punky psych spread across the 4 albums with Easter Everywhere being my fave, even the fake "Live"album is listenable as the added on audience noise has been greatly reduced,i just wish some one would do that with Johns Children "Orgasm"album(so there)
Thats been my listening pleasure(or torture(lol) over the last couple of days.
If you like Witch you wans Question Mark.

Leviathan - Unleashed! 2 x LP. Already posted on this.
Art Boys Collection - Stoned Wall (Golden Pavillion LP / CD) - 2010 reissue of 1972 private press / unissued album. Brilliant stuff which seems to have slipped under the radar. Reminds me of Belgium's Wallace Collection at their best to an extend. Lots of phasing, prog-pop and pure melody.
Cosmic Dealer - Crystalization 2 x LP reissue of Dutch 1972 LP with extras on Psuedonym. Great psych inflected tuneful rock album. Still yet to get their second unreissued album on World In Sound.
The Kinks - The Pye album collection CD box set from 1998, all 10 PYE albums in mini LP sleeves, went through them all systematically along with both the 2x 10 CD EP box sets from 1998 and 2000. Good to hear all that again with the upcoming live at the BBC box set due next month.

Just received 'Blur: 21 - The Box' today from amazon.ca ($123.28 plus free shipping, nice deal for 18 cd's, 3 dvd's, a 7" single and hardcover book). I've only listened to Leaisure and it's bonus disc so far, but it's sounding better than the original - which always sounded pretty good to me.
