One for all the 60s girl sound fans. I was looking recently for a comprehensive collection of Lulu's best years but couldn't really find much beyond the usual ad hoc hits comps. Then idly browsing Amazon only yesterday, I see that there is a 5 CD set scheduled for Novemnber 2nd on Edsel. What's more there's an exclusive Amazon edition of 500 with a signed print for the same price of just under £30.
Limited to 500 units, this Amazon Exclusive Edition includes an exclusive print signed by Lulu. Throughout her career, Lulu has worked with some of the best in the business. In the space of ten exciting years, straddling the 60s and the 70s, her recordings were produced by the stellar list of Mickie Most, Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, Giorgio Moroder, Wes Farrell and David Bowie, with arrangements by the likes of John Paul Jones, Johnny Harris and Peter Knight. And the songs included early gems by the Bee Gees, Harry Nilsson, Neil Diamond, Randy Newman, and Elton John & Bernie Taupin, and classics from David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Lennon & McCartney and many more. The hits featured include "To Sir With Love" (a US # 1), "The Boat That I Row", "Love Loves To Love Love", "I'm A Tiger" (written by Ronnie Scott and Marty Wilde), "Boom Bang-A-Bang", "Oh Me Oh My (I'm A Fool For You Baby)", "The Man With The Golden Gun" (John Barry's theme for the Bond film), "The Man Who Sold The World" and "Watch That Man", and "Take Your Mama For A Ride". This annotated 5 CD media book is also extensively illustrated with many archive photos.
All you need then is her 1965 'Something To Shout About' album with the bonus tracks and you have a great career retrospective. Can't find a track list for the set, so anyone who is:slightly_smiling_face: on Facebook etc maybe could?
Once again, my thanks go out to you for the head's up Paul!
I've spent a little bit of time each day trying to find a track listing for this set (with no luck whatsoever) , however I wasted no time hitting the good old 'Pre-order This Item Today' button on amazon.uk.
Like many a young boy of the sixties - at least I'm assuming I wasn't alone - Lulu was my first big crush. And as I a geezer of 58, I guess I'm still pretty sweet on her.
Looking forward to this collection... whatever's on it!
Hi Mark, a track listing will emerge soon enough I think, they've just flagged this release up quite early so probably haven't finalised it yet. It sounds like it will cover all her styles from Micky Most induced / produced hit pop singles to her preferred r'n'b / soulful songs and of course 'The Man Who Sold The World', a really comprehensive colelction I hope. Do get her 1965 debut album for Decca 'Something To Shout About' (on CD / vinyl) then you will pobably have the majority of her work from ther most productive period. This 5 cd set starts after she left Decca in 1967.
And thanks again Paul!
I saw the track listing for Decade with the SDE mailer earlier this week and it looks like we're going to get everything that was released (not that I'm an expert). But full albums and related singles is better than what I was expecting.
I also ordered 'Shout! The Complete Decca Recordings' as you suggested, which was surprisingly much cheaper then the re-issue of 'Shout!'
