The Fernweh

If you still have a tenner to spare for music, you could do a lot worse than plump for this evocative self-titled album by new band The Fernweh

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Fernweh/dp/B07KBRZH8P/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1544434977&sr=1-1&keywords=the+fernweh+cd

The cover art whilst visually arresting in what seems to be a (posed?) piece of photo-journalism (is there a story that accompanies it?), bears no relation to the music inside and I rather like that. There's no end of elaborately concocted sleeve designs to over designate the neo psyche flavours inside many contemporary albums that make it al lto obvious. This one goes entirely against all that.

You could smuggle this disc into your CD collection (also on vinyl) of original 60s British psych and no-one could tell it was recorded this year! It is perhaps the most convincing vintage English psych sound you might ever here of contemporary and original songs. Think Barrett era Floyd meets 'Eight MIles HIgh' / Fifth Dimension era Byrds - that is to say English folk tunes via their lysergic American trasportation and fed back to us.

You can very easily hear this album as a lost volume of Syde Trips or some other barely known RG Jones recorded self pressed album of 99 copies for an extremely local fan base long since evaporated but resurrected by Tenth Planet. It has instances of assertive electric guitar playing that might bring to mind Forever Amber for instance. Then again it has a strong constructed memory cue that insists on, as David Wells put it in his liners to Tenth Planet's collection of Peter Eden productions from years ago, 'wet school play times'.

You can hear this as both contemporary and vintage at the same time equally well. The kind of vague distance in the production shows what they have been listening to and many on this list will recognise that as well.

I really like this album anyway, you can sample it on Youtube and no doubt elsewhere.

Try the opening track 'The Liar' on the link below and a happy holidays to all RZers:

Re: The Fernweh

They're on the same label as Serpent Power whose two albums also have a genuine 60s vibe to them.

Re: The Fernweh

Thanks Greg, I just ordered their 2nd album, great sound.

Re: The Fernweh

No worries Paul. They're basically a duo of The Coral and Zutons members.

Thanks also for the heads up on The Fernweh.
