The well is dry, Jimmehs

Warning!
This post might be difficult ground for some of you.

Crushingly depressing confirmation of something we music collectors/navigators have suspected for more than awhiles.

For the last two weeks I have been youtubing unknown bands. (Most American)
I had accumulated a big list of hitherto unknown lps – bands I had not previously heard of (from Morton Jack books, from Acid Archives,Pokora.....and a large, old list I had whose source I forget.)

It is amazing what you can turn up on youtube. I got maybe 70% of my list covered by youtube clips.

Now – and here is the point – THE VAST MAJORITY OF THESE rarities TURNED OUT TO BE TOTAL RUBBISH.

-The electronic lps were, more than often, sparse and uninteresting, or just too damn experimental and more noise than anything else.

-the fusion lps all had that 80’s smooth light fuzak imprint …or were just too unappealingly straight jazzy .

-the private press American stuff was in many cases just “loner” shit with a guy playing acoustic guitar and not much else. No depth or laughably amateur.

-that described as being “psych” was as psych as a doorknob. Garage; more times than not just AOR.

-the hardrock, just pedestrian/silly.

-the library (production/stock) music was either too experimental or too sappy “oldmanish”. Couldn’t find much by way of psych.

-the prog-to-dungus quotient was…well the less said the better.

In short THERE ARE NO MORE “FINDS”. The barrel is scraped down to the splinters.

Is this – as Singer put it – down to “the blasé attitude of a hedonist who has already tasted everything”?

I don’t think so.
Moreloikes an ever-curious Masterman who has heard so much in his lifetime to have acquired the taste and faculty to draw distinction between the wheat and the chaff.

By the way:
If anyone is interested, I can post here some of the lps – mebbe a hundred - which I have been unable to source from youtube clippies.

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

Yes, know what you mean, but I guess it's to be expected.

Every now and then I come across a band that I am pleasantly surprised by. Recently it was the U.S. band Damnation Of Adam Blessing. Three albums from 69-71, and I normally find U.S. bands and singers are not normally my thing.

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

I hear you Wallace. I’m pretty much in the same boat. It’s a bit depressing. I would, however, be interested in seeing your list.

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

These are lps I could not find youtube clips for, or ones I have not yet gotten to, or ones that are difficult to do a Google search on.

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

Dear Wallace..... I have also been through the epic journey of trying to source rare and elusive psych albums using a multitude of reference books, online guides articles, download sites etc and I long since came to the conclusion like you that all the "good stuff" has already been rediscovered and reissued and the dirge remains as it should buried and forgotten. Searching for the odd gem amongst the rubble is very much a case of fewer returns for more and more effort. Given the fact that what is to be found from the past is finite and stuff to be released by new bands is infinite I know where I am now looking. Nowt wrong with being nostalgic and yearning for the music of yesteryear but if we only look back we never see what's coming. So many good bands have taken influence from the GREATS of the past refined and in cases improved on what was and it's just as rewarding discovering psych gems from the 80's 90's and current resurgences. I was thinking about compiling a list to help others but apart from it taking a fair amount of time (given the enormity of my collection) and the fact that my taste in music would not be the same as whoever is reading this I decided to pass. However I will share an invaluable search tool that makes hunting and grabbing stuff off YouTube a lost less bothersome and much faster. No download, scams viruses or ads, totally free and unlimited and pretty nippy. You can forget visiting YT completely this does the search for you and presents it (mostly) in one place. Many albums are complete and can be downloaded with a single click others are presented as playlists and you will have to grab a track at a time but it only takes a few minutes to grab an entire album plus you can pre-sample everything.
Happy hunting. PPP

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

Well I agree pretty much to a point. The lost LPs have been excavated from their graveyards but you can never be certain that there isn't some unmarked grave off to the side.Never say never. Frankly however that seems remote now.

But it's not quite the end because there are still great singles being unearthed. Case in point I heard some great singles by one of NZs rare progressive outfits Ragnarok - well not Ragnarok itself but a pre Ragnarok group called Flying Wild. And there are a lot of singles out there (obviously they were a lot easier to record than a LP) so its not quite the end. Just hopes for great Lps are dimming. Maybe in France there is still something great.

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

Furr glam rock album on tax scam label.
Paradox Modern Madness lp great prog album with some avant grade probably the best lp on Magnaglide.
Gedo hard rock album pretty good.
National Flag hard rock with some pop rock. Originals are mega rare, reissued on cd in 2011 Third Light Records label.
I can't find a few rare albums on that website link after doing a search, those albums aren't listed in this thread and the albums are not online so you can't hear them.

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

Hi Wallace

I did a search from your list on Soulseek (about 30 titles) and most were available for download. Nice to know if you want to sample these.

Re: The well is dry, Jimmehs

Hmmm,i read this thread of posts, and realised the original post was 2 years ago......i'm going to be the dissenter here.........but i do understand many will think it's drying up.......i personally don't!!

The internet has spoiled us,it's made many albums that are impossible to find, more accessable,to even hear those albums,it could take years ....but now with many it's a 1 minute search, and that elusive album from 69 is in front off you........if you are happy with a download, thats fine, but like most on here ,i want a physical product in my hand,i don't buy vinyl,i only buy cds,so from my point of view, there are going to be many albums i'd love to see on cd,but aren't.

Personally i don't have a massive trawl like Wallace, yes i read all the reference books, but i have not written a huge list off albums to trawl youtube or any other music search like spotify etc......i just don't do it,for me personally it takes much fun from the idea of "discovering"an album....i like surprises, and yes a "surprise" can be crap and costly, but on cd it's mainly not, buying vinyl it can be!!I NEED that element in my collecting,so i did not read the list Wallace wrote, obviously if an album on cd is recommended from someone else,i will possibly order it,but i remember a big part of collecting music was that element of anticipation to hear this for the first time.........everyone must remember that??Or am i a freak?

I will NOT let the internet spoil that for me..it's what you make it,it's whatever you want from it.Personally in my experience,i have found many collectors "greedy",there's never enough for some people, they want it all NOW,with the internet, those people can have a lot NOW!!!It's not for me,i DON'T download music,it does very little for me,maybe i'm an obsessive, but it's like a ritual for me,ordering a cd,the anticipation waiting for the postie,it arrives, the unwrapping off it,taking the cellophane off it,then put it on the cd player, and wait for the first notes, and if you're lucky to have a booklet, read while it plays........if it's a disappointment,it's part off the game for me,or it can be the opposite,im ecstatic at the enjoyment i get,THAT is what collecting for me is about!!

I feel guys like Wallace, want it ALL...if he wants to trawl the internet for hundreds off albums, and finds the majority crap, fair enough, that's his prerogative, and ONLY his opinion on those albums.....but he writes as if his word is the final word......it isn't ,it's HIS opinion!!That is all!!WE all have our things in music we like or hate......so i found this post, rather depressing, the sage Wallace telling us all its dry out there,if YOU want it to be,possibly!!Its AGAIN personal choice.......for me i know there are thousands off albums i still want to hear and if ever available on cd to purchase, and i have the funds i will, but i don't always have the funds, and i accept that, when i was younger i found that frustrating, and in the days of cdr trading,i took part in that......with many folks who are still taking part on here.BUT if an album came out on cd,with artwork, booklet etc,the cdr would get dumped,i like a physical product in my hands!!It's what YOU are happy with as an individual.

So Wallace,if you're trawling hundreds off albums on the internet.....where are you doing this? Are you listening to the whole album and NOT skipping through them?Do you see the artwork ?Are you only listening to them once? There's so many things to take into consideration with this type of post Wallace started!!There are many albums i did not care much for at first, but love now,it's all perspective, its all mood,it's all circumstance.......so this original post for me is not true,it maybe is for Wallace.......which is no surprise ,if hes trawling through lists of albums!!

HIS opinion, and i've disagreed with his opinion many times on here,so i'll take this with an enormous pinch of salt.......music and collecting is what YOU want from it,and i certainly don't want it the way Wallace is doing it.......but that's just me,a middle aged bloke, who doesnt want it all NOW,in my younger days when this type of music was totally NEW to me......of course i was hungry for more......even insatiable........but after many years,i'm not in such a hurry to hear it all and have it all, then tell everyone its mostly all crap left.....i'll discover that for myself,it's part off this i love,discovering.............so wallace can stick his "all crap left"up his crapper!!!

Amen.
