“ The end of a thing is better than its beginning; The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit. Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, For anger rests in the bosom of fools. Do not say, “Why were the former days better than these?” For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.” – Ecclesiastes 7:8-10
Our FATHER in Heaven,
There is truly some wisdom found int his passage. Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof. By faith -see what the end will be, and with patience expect it. Perhaps Solomon had Moses story in mind when he said this. Better was the end of Moses’s treaty with Pharaoh, for Israel was brought forth with triumph. In the beginning, the tale of bricks was doubled, and everything looked discouraging. In order to see the end of a matter, we must be clothed with humility; for the proud in spirit are those that cannot bear to be trampled upon, and when they are, they grow outrageous, and fret themselves. That will break a proud man’s heart, but it will not break a humble man’s sleep. Help us FATHER to put on patience, submit to YOUR will in the affliction, and wait patiently, to expect the issue to be taken care of in YOUR time. FATHER, help us to not be hasty in our spirit to be angry. Help us avoid affronting and resenting our oppressors or that which oppresses us. Yes, anger may come into the bosom of a wise man, and pass through it as a wayfaring man, but it rests only in the bosom of fools; there it resides, there it remains, there it has the innermost and uppermost place, there it is hugged as that which is dear, and laid in the bosom, and not easily parted with. Help us to be wise and allow no place for the devil. True wisdom teaches that it is a folly to complain of the badness of our own times when we have more reason to complain of the badness of our own hearts. We also recognize the need to be thankful that things are not worse, but that even in the worst of times, we enjoy many mercies, which help to make them not only tolerable, but even comfortable. Thank YOU FATHER! When we cry of the goodness of former times, and lament that they are better, we fail to acknowledge YOUR present mercies and graces. Forgive us FATHER! YOU have always been good and fallen mankind have always bad. In some respects, the times are now worse than they were, perhaps in other respects, they are better. But one thing has not changed – and that is YOU! HELP us to see YOU at the end of all our oppression. Help us glory in YOUR mercy and grace. For in so doing, we will so ourselves wise before YOU.
