“ Dead[ flies ]putrefy the perfumer’s ointment, And cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor.” – Ecclesiastes 10:1

Our FATHER in Heaven,
Solomon, here truly shared a gem of wisdom and we do well to take heed of it today. There is a great need in taking heed of being guilty of any instance of folly; for a little folly is a great blemish to the one that is in reputation for wisdom and honor. FATHER, it takes a long time to acquire a good name, but so quickly it can be sullied and damaged! Here, the wise man, compared it to dead flies in sweet perfume, not only spoiling the sweetness of it, and the appearance, but making it to send forth a stinking savor. Help us to value true wisdom as it is - a true honor, as it gains one a reputation, which is like a box of precious ointment, pleasing and very valuable. When under temptation, may we be reminded that a reputation that is got with difficulty, and by a great deal of wisdom, may be easily lost, with just a little folly. Remove envy from us as envy fastens upon eminency and makes the worst of the mistakes and miscarriages of those who are cried up for wisdom. Yes, envy allows us to not see the folly, and make the needed correction. FATHER, this applies to all of us, but especially those of us with a special calling for ministry. Those who make a great profession of faith have need to walk very circumspectly, to abstain from all appearances of evil, and approaches towards it, because many eyes are upon them, that watch for their halting; their character is soon sullied, and they have a great deal of reputation to lose. FATHER, we pray for YOUR mercy upon the Body of CHRIST, because many taking the lead in the Church, has failed in this regard and has stumbled the weak. The reputation of the Church has been sullied. We need YOUR mercy and YOUR forgiveness, but we also need YOUR help so as to change the hearts of the ones who cannot see the wisdom of these words. Adorn us FATHER, to be the chaste bride that the BRIDEGROOM wants as HE soon makes HIS appearance. We love YOU and we thank YOU for the calling YOU have put on us to be holy. Remove all folly from us …
