This is what we need to know for our lives today.
Luke 21:20-24

20 “And when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived. 21 Then those in Judea must flee to the hills. Let those in Jerusalem escape, and those outside the city should not enter it for shelter. 22 For those will be days of God’s vengeance, and the prophetic words of the Scriptures will be fulfilled. 23 How terrible it will be for pregnant women and for mothers nursing their babies. For there will be great distress in the land and wrath upon this people. 24 They will be brutally killed by the sword or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world. And Jerusalem will be conquered and trampled down by the Gentiles until the age of the Gentiles comes to an end.

Christ is instructing His disciples of the coming destruction of Jerusalem and the fate of the Jewish people. Jerusalem was completely destroyed in 70 AD and the Jewish people were scattered around the world. They have been brutally treated by the Gentiles since that time. The children of Abraham were chosen to be the vehicle that God would use to bring restoration to the world. But that did not happen, most chose to reject Christ and crucified Him. Christ is telling the Jewish nation that the time is coming for the Gentiles and is actually the age we are living in now. At this time in history, most of the world hears about salvation through Jesus Christ from Gentiles. The Christian church was started by Jews, but continued on through Gentiles. But the age of the Gentiles is fast coming to an end. We know this because after 2500 years, Israel became a nation under Jewish control again. Luke records the words of Christ telling us about His Second Coming. Jesus Christ came the first time to save; He is coming the second time to judge. Christ goes on to warn us in Luke 21:34 & 35, “Watch out! Don’t let me find you living in careless ease and drunkenness, and filled with the worries of this life. Don’t let that day catch you unaware, as in a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth.” This is what we need to know for our lives today. We need to be watching and waiting for Him to return. As we take this attitude, we become more Christ centered and less self centered. When we know and are aware that Christ is coming again, our focus changes and there is more urgency to tell others about Him. Search the scriptures for yourself and seek what God would have you understand about His return.
