Isaiah Sent to King Ahaz
7 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to make war against it, but could not prevail against it. 2 And it was told to the house of David, saying, “Syria’s forces are deployed in Ephraim.” So his heart and the heart of his people were moved as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.

3 Then the Lord said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you and Shear-Jashub your son, at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool, on the highway to the Fuller’s Field, 4 and say to him: ‘Take heed, and be quiet; do not fear or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah have plotted evil against you, saying, 6 “Let us go up against Judah and trouble it, and let us make a gap in its wall for ourselves, and set a king over them, the son of Tabel”— 7 thus says the Lord God:

“It shall not stand,
Nor shall it come to pass.
8 For the head of Syria is Damascus,
And the head of Damascus is Rezin.
Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be broken,
So that it will not be a people.
9 The head of Ephraim is Samaria,
And the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son.
If you will not believe,
Surely you shall not be established.” ’ ”

The Immanuel Prophecy
10 Moreover the Lord spoke again to Ahaz, saying, 11 “Ask a sign for yourself from the Lord your God; ask it either in the depth or in the height above.”

12 But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, nor will I test the Lord!”

13 Then he said, “Hear now, O house of David! Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will you weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. 15 Curds and honey He shall eat, that He may know to refuse the evil and choose the good. 16 For before the Child shall know to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land that you dread will be forsaken by both her kings. 17 The Lord will bring the king of Assyria upon you and your people and your father’s house—days that have not come since the day that Ephraim departed from Judah.”

18 And it shall come to pass in that day
That the Lord will whistle for the fly
That is in the farthest part of the rivers of Egypt,
And for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.
19 They will come, and all of them will rest
In the desolate valleys and in the clefts of the rocks,
And on all thorns and in all pastures.

20 In the same day the Lord will shave with a hired razor,
With those from beyond the River, with the king of Assyria,
The head and the hair of the legs,
And will also remove the beard.

21 It shall be in that day
That a man will keep alive a young cow and two sheep;
22 So it shall be, from the abundance of milk they give,
That he will eat curds;
For curds and honey everyone will eat who is left in the land.

23 It shall happen in that day,
That wherever there could be a thousand vines
Worth a thousand shekels of silver,
It will be for briers and thorns.
24 With arrows and bows men will come there,
Because all the land will become briers and thorns.

25 And to any hill which could be dug with the hoe,
You will not go there for fear of briers and thorns;
But it will become a range for oxen
And a place for sheep to roam.

Assyria Will Invade the Land
8 Moreover the Lord said to me, “Take a large scroll, and write on it with a man’s pen concerning Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz. 2 And I will take for Myself faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.”

3 Then I went to the prophetess, and she conceived and bore a son. Then the Lord said to me, “Call his name Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz; 4 for before the child shall have knowledge to cry ‘My father’ and ‘My mother,’ the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria will be taken away before the king of Assyria.”

5 The Lord also spoke to me again, saying:

6 “Inasmuch as these people refused
The waters of Shiloah that flow softly,
And rejoice in Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them
The waters of the River, strong and mighty—
The king of Assyria and all his glory;
He will go up over all his channels
And go over all his banks.
8 He will pass through Judah,
He will overflow and pass over,
He will reach up to the neck;
And the stretching out of his wings
Will fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel.

9 “Be shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces!
Give ear, all you from far countries.
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces;
Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
10 Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing;
Speak the word, but it will not stand,
For God is with us.”

Fear God, Heed His Word
11 For the Lord spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:

12 “Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’
Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy,
Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
13 The Lord of hosts, Him you shall hallow;
Let Him be your fear,
And let Him be your dread.
14 He will be as a sanctuary,
But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense
To both the houses of Israel,
As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
15 And many among them shall stumble;
They shall fall and be broken,
Be snared and taken.”

16 Bind up the testimony,
Seal the law among my disciples.
17 And I will wait on the Lord,
Who hides His face from the house of Jacob;
And I will hope in Him.
18 Here am I and the children whom the Lord has given me!
We are for signs and wonders in Israel
From the Lord of hosts,
Who dwells in Mount Zion.

19 And when they say to you, “Seek those who are mediums and wizards, who whisper and mutter,” should not a people seek their God? Should they seek the dead on behalf of the living? 20 To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

21 They will pass through it hard-pressed and hungry; and it shall happen, when they are hungry, that they will be enraged and curse their king and their God, and look upward. 22 Then they will look to the earth, and see trouble and darkness, gloom of anguish; and they will be driven into darkness.

Mensaje de Isaías a Ajaz
7 En los días en que Ajaz hijo de Yotán, hijo de Uzías, reinaba en Judá, sucedió que el rey Resín de Siria y Pecaj hijo de Remalías, que era rey de Israel, se dirigieron a Jerusalén para atacarla, pero no la pudieron tomar. 2 La noticia de que Siria se había aliado con Efraín llegó a la casa de David, y esto hizo que se estremeciera el corazón del rey y de su pueblo, como cuando el viento hace que se estremezcan los árboles del bosque.

3 Entonces el Señor le dijo a Isaías:

«Ve ahora con tu hijo Sear Yasub adonde termina el acueducto del estanque superior, en dirección al Campo del Lavador. Allí te encontrarás con Ajaz, 4 y le dirás: “Ten mucho cuidado, y mucha calma. No tengas miedo ni se sobresalte tu corazón por causa de Resín y de Siria, y del hijo de Remalías.” Ellos arden de ira, pero no son más que el humo de dos tizones apagados. 5 El sirio se ha puesto de acuerdo con Efraín y con el hijo de Remalías, para hacerte daño. Ha dicho: 6 “Vayamos contra Judá para aterrorizarla. Nos la repartiremos, y pondremos por rey al hijo de Tabel.” 7 Pero Dios el Señor dice así: “Eso no tendrá éxito, ni será así.” 8 Ciertamente, la cabeza de Siria es Damasco, y la cabeza de Damasco es Resín, pero dentro de sesenta y cinco años Efraín será destruido y dejará de ser pueblo. 9 Y la cabeza de Efraín es Samaria, y la cabeza de Samaria es el hijo de Remalías. Si ustedes no creen esto, tampoco permanecerán.»

10 El Señor le habló también a Ajaz, y le dijo:

11 «Pídele al Señor tu Dios una señal. Pídesela de las profundidades de la tierra, o de las alturas de los cielos.»

12 Y Ajaz respondió:

«No pediré nada. No pondré a prueba al Señor.»

13 Dijo entonces Isaías:

«Escuchen bien ustedes, los de la casa de David. ¿Les parece poco el molestar a los hombres, que también quieren molestar a mi Dios? 14 Pues ahora el Señor mismo les dará una señal: La joven concebirá, y dará a luz un hijo, y le pondrá por nombre Emanuel. 15 Comerá mantequilla y miel hasta que sepa desechar lo malo y escoger lo bueno. 16 Ciertamente, antes de que el niño sepa desechar lo malo y escoger lo bueno, el país de estos dos reyes a quienes tú temes quedará abandonado. 17 El Señor hará que vengan sobre ti, sobre tu pueblo y sobre la casa de tu padre, días como nunca vinieron desde el día en que Efraín se apartó de Judá para unirse al rey de Asiria.

18 »Cuando llegue ese día, el Señor llamará con un silbido a la mosca que está al final de los ríos de Egipto, y a la abeja que está en la tierra de Asiria; 19 y éstas vendrán y acamparán en todos los valles desiertos, y en las grietas de las piedras, y en todos los zarzales y en todas las matas.

20 »Cuando llegue ese día, el Señor traerá al rey de Asiria, que habita al otro lado del río, y ese rey será como una navaja alquilada, con la cual les rapará la cabeza y el pelo de los pies, y hasta la barba.

21 »Cuando llegue ese día, quien críe una vaca y dos ovejas 22 comerá mantequilla, pues será mucha la leche que le darán. Sí, quien quede con vida en el país ciertamente comerá miel y mantequilla.

23 »Cuando llegue ese día, el campo donde había mil vides con valor de mil monedas de plata, será un campo de espinos y cardos. 24 Irán allá con arcos y flechas, porque toda la tierra estará llena de espinos y cardos. 25 Por temor de los espinos y cardos, nadie irá a ninguno de los montes antes cultivados con azada, porque sólo servirán como pastizales de bueyes y para que los ganados los pisoteen.»

El temor del Señor
8 El Señor me dijo:

«Toma una tabla grande, y con un punzón escribe en ella acerca de Maher Salal Jasbaz.»

2 Como testigos confiables reuní conmigo al sacerdote Urías, y a Zacarías hijo de Jeberequías. 3 Luego me allegué a la profetisa, la cual concibió y dio a luz un hijo. Entonces el Señor me dijo:

«Ponle por nombre Maher Salal Jasbaz, 4 porque antes de que el niño sepa decir “padre mío” y “madre mía”, la riqueza de Damasco y los despojos de Samaria serán llevados ante el rey de Asiria.»

5 El Señor me habló una vez más, y me dijo:

6 «Este pueblo rechazó las aguas de Siloé, que corren tranquilas, y se sintió feliz con Resín y con el hijo de Remalías.»

7 Por lo tanto, el Señor hará que los inunden por completo las impetuosas y abundantes aguas del río, es decir, hará que el rey de Asiria los inunde con todo su poder. Y ese rey cubrirá todos sus ríos, y rebasará todas sus riberas; 8 y llegará hasta Judá y la inundará, y seguirá adelante y le llegará hasta la garganta; luego, oh Emanuel, extenderá sus alas y llenará la tierra en toda su extensión.

9 ¡Reúnanse ustedes, pueblos, que serán derrotados! Escuchen ustedes, gente de lejanas tierras: pueden prepararse para la batalla, ¡pero serán totalmente derrotados! 10 Pueden confabularse, pero no tendrán éxito; pueden hablar cuanto quieran, pero nada acontecerá, porque Dios está con nosotros.

11 Ciertamente el Señor me habló con firmeza, y me dio instrucciones de no ir por el camino de este pueblo. Me dijo así:

12 «No llamen ustedes conspiración a todo lo que este pueblo llama conspiración. No tengan miedo, ni teman lo que ellos temen. 13 Santifiquen al Señor de los ejércitos, y sólo a él. Que él sea para ustedes la única razón de su temor. 14 Hagan de él su santuario. Pero para las dos casas de Israel será una piedra de tropiezo, que los hará caer; y para los habitantes de Jerusalén les será una trampa, una red. 15 Muchos de ellos tropezarán; y caerán y serán destrozados; y se enredarán y quedarán apresados.

16 »Ata el testimonio; ponle un sello a mi enseñanza entre mis discípulos.»

17 Yo esperaré al Señor, que escondió su rostro de la casa de Jacob. En él confiaré. 18 Aquí estoy yo, con los hijos que el Señor me ha dado. Somos en Israel señales portentosas de parte del Señor de los ejércitos, que habita en el monte de Sión. 19 Si alguien les dice:

«Consulten a los encantadores y a los adivinos, a los que hablan con susurros»,

ustedes respondan:

«¿Acaso no es a su Dios a quien el pueblo debe consultar? ¿Acaso tiene que consultar a los muertos acerca de los vivos?»

20 ¡A la enseñanza y al testimonio! Si sus palabras no corresponden a esto, es porque no les ha amanecido. 21 Y pasarán por la tierra fatigados y hambrientos. Y cuando tengan hambre, se enojarán y, de cara al cielo, maldecirán a su rey y a su Dios. 22 Y cuando miren a la tierra, sólo verán tribulación y tinieblas, oscuridad y angustia; ¡y en las tinieblas se hundirán!
