A Pattern of Self-Denial
9 Am I not an apostle? Am I not free? Have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? Are you not my work in the Lord? 2 If I am not an apostle to others, yet doubtless I am to you. For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3 My defense to those who examine me is this: 4 Do we have no right to eat and drink? 5 Do we have no right to take along a believing wife, as do also the other apostles, the brothers of the Lord, and Cephas? 6 Or is it only Barnabas and I who have no right to refrain from working? 7 Who ever goes to war at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its fruit? Or who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk of the flock?
8 Do I say these things as a mere man? Or does not the law say the same also? 9 For it is written in the law of Moses, “You shall not muzzle an ox while it treads out the grain.” Is it oxen God is concerned about? 10 Or does He say it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written, that he who plows should plow in hope, and he who threshes in hope should be partaker of his hope. 11 If we have sown spiritual things for you, is it a great thing if we reap your material things? 12 If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more?
Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ. 13 Do you not know that those who minister the holy things eat of the things of the temple, and those who serve at the altar partake of the offerings of the altar? 14 Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
15 But I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void. 16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to boast of, for necessity is laid upon me; yes, woe is me if I do not preach the gospel! 17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel.
Serving All Men
19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; 20 and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; 21 to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; 22 to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some. 23 Now this I do for the gospel’s sake, that I may be partaker of it with you.
Striving for a Crown
24 Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. 25 And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. 26 Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. 27 But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified.
Old Testament Examples
10 Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, 3 all ate the same spiritual food, 4 and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. 5 But with most of them God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness.
6 Now these things became our examples, to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. 11 Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come.
12 Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
Flee from Idolatry
14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 15 I speak as to wise men; judge for yourselves what I say. 16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17 For we, though many, are one bread and one body; for we all partake of that one bread.
18 Observe Israel after the flesh: Are not those who eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19 What am I saying then? That an idol is anything, or what is offered to idols is anything? 20 Rather, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to demons and not to God, and I do not want you to have fellowship with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the Lord’s table and of the table of demons. 22 Or do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? Are we stronger than He?
All to the Glory of God
23 All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. 24 Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being.
25 Eat whatever is sold in the meat market, asking no questions for conscience’ sake; 26 for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.”
27 If any of those who do not believe invites you to dinner, and you desire to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no question for conscience’ sake. 28 But if anyone says to you, “This was offered to idols,” do not eat it for the sake of the one who told you, and for conscience’ sake; for “the earth is the Lord’s, and all its fullness.” 29 “Conscience,” I say, not your own, but that of the other. For why is my liberty judged by another man’s conscience? 30 But if I partake with thanks, why am I evil spoken of for the food over which I give thanks?
31 Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 32 Give no offense, either to the Jews or to the Greeks or to the church of God, 33 just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.

Los derechos de un apóstol
9 ¿Qué, no soy apóstol? ¿Y acaso no soy libre? ¿Acaso no he visto a Jesús, nuestro Señor? ¿Y no son ustedes el fruto de mi trabajo en el Señor? 2 Tal vez otros no me consideren apóstol, pero para ustedes sí lo soy, porque ustedes son el sello de mi apostolado en el Señor.
3 Mi defensa contra los que me acusan es la siguiente: 4 ¿Acaso nosotros no tenemos derecho a comer y beber? 5 ¿Y acaso no tenemos derecho a traer con nosotros una esposa creyente, como lo hacen los otros apóstoles, y Cefas y los hermanos del Señor? 6 ¿O es que sólo Bernabé y yo estamos obligados a trabajar? 7 ¿Qué soldado presta servicio a expensas de sus propios recursos? ¿Quién planta una viña y no come de sus uvas? ¿O quién pastorea el rebaño y no bebe de la leche que ordeña?
8 Esto lo digo, no sólo de acuerdo con el punto de vista humano, sino también de acuerdo con la ley. 9 Porque en la ley de Moisés está escrito: «No pondrás bozal al buey que trilla». ¿Quiere decir esto que Dios se preocupa de los bueyes, 10 o más bien lo dice por todos nosotros? En realidad, esto se escribió por nosotros; porque tanto el que ara como el que trilla deben hacerlo con la esperanza de recibir su parte de la cosecha. 11 Si nosotros sembramos entre ustedes lo espiritual, ¿será mucho pedir que cosechemos de ustedes lo material? 12 Si otros participan de este derecho sobre ustedes, ¡con mayor razón nosotros!
Sin embargo, no hemos hecho uso de este derecho, sino que lo toleramos todo, a fin de no presentar ningún obstáculo al evangelio de Cristo. 13 ¿Acaso no saben ustedes que los que trabajan en el templo, comen del templo; y que los que sirven al altar, participan del altar? 14 Así también el Señor ordenó a los que anuncian el evangelio, que vivan del evangelio.
15 Pero yo no me he aprovechado de nada de esto, ni tampoco he escrito esto para que se haga así conmigo; porque prefiero morir antes que alguien me despoje de este motivo de orgullo. 16 Pues si anuncio el evangelio, no tengo por qué jactarme, porque ésa es mi misión insoslayable. ¡Ay de mí si no predico el evangelio!
17 Así que, si lo hago de buena voluntad, recibiré mi recompensa; pero si lo hago de mala voluntad, no hago más que cumplir con la misión que me ha sido encomendada. 18 ¿Cuál es, pues, mi recompensa? La de predicar el evangelio de Cristo de manera gratuita, para no abusar de mi derecho en el evangelio. 19 Porque, aunque soy libre y no dependo de nadie, me he hecho esclavo de todos para ganar al mayor número posible. 20 Entre los judíos me comporto como judío, para ganar a los judíos; y, aunque no estoy sujeto a la ley, entre los que están sujetos a la ley me comporto como si estuviera sujeto a la ley, para ganar a los que están sujetos a la ley. 21 Entre los que no tienen ley, me comporto como si no tuviera ley, para ganar a los que no tienen ley (aun cuando no estoy libre de la ley de Dios, sino bajo la ley de Cristo). 22 Entre los débiles me comporto como débil, para ganar a los débiles; me comporto como todos ante todos, para que de todos pueda yo salvar a algunos. 23 Y esto lo hago por causa del evangelio, para ser copartícipe de él.
24 ¿Acaso no saben ustedes que, aunque todos corren en el estadio, solamente uno se lleva el premio? Corran, pues, de tal manera que lo obtengan. 25 Todos los que luchan, se abstienen de todo. Ellos lo hacen para recibir una corona corruptible; pero nosotros, para recibir una corona incorruptible. 26 Así que yo corro y lucho, pero no sin una meta definida; no lo hago como si estuviera golpeando el viento; 27 más bien, golpeo mi cuerpo y lo someto a servidumbre, no sea que después de haber predicado a otros yo mismo quede eliminado.
Amonestaciones contra la idolatría
10 Hermanos, no quiero que ignoren que todos nuestros antepasados estuvieron bajo la nube, y que todos cruzaron el mar. 2 Todos ellos, en unión con Moisés, fueron bautizados en la nube y en el mar. 3 También todos ellos comieron el mismo alimento espiritual, 4 y todos bebieron la misma bebida espiritual, porque bebían de la roca espiritual que los seguía, la cual era Cristo. 5 Pero la mayoría de ellos no agradó a Dios, y por eso quedaron tendidos en el desierto.
6 Pero todo esto sucedió como un ejemplo para nosotros, a fin de que no codiciemos cosas malas, como ellos lo hicieron. 7 No sean idólatras, como lo fueron algunos de ellos, según está escrito: «El pueblo se sentó a comer y a beber, y luego se levantó a divertirse.» 8 No caigamos en la inmoralidad sexual, como lo hicieron algunos de ellos, y por lo cual en un solo día murieron veintitrés mil. 9 Tampoco pongamos a prueba a Cristo, como también algunos de ellos lo hicieron, y murieron por causa de las serpientes. 10 Ni murmuren, como algunos de ellos lo hicieron, y perecieron a manos del destructor. 11 Todo esto les sucedió como ejemplo, y quedó escrito como advertencia para nosotros, los que vivimos en los últimos tiempos. 12 Así que, el que crea estar firme, tenga cuidado de no caer. 13 A ustedes no les ha sobrevenido ninguna tentación que no sea humana; pero Dios es fiel y no permitirá que ustedes sean sometidos a una prueba más allá de lo que puedan resistir, sino que junto con la prueba les dará la salida, para que puedan sobrellevarla.
14 Por tanto, amados míos, huyan de la idolatría. 15 Les hablo como a personas sensatas; juzguen ustedes mismos lo que digo. 16 La copa de bendición por la cual damos gracias, ¿no es la comunión de la sangre de Cristo? Y el pan que partimos, ¿no es la comunión del cuerpo de Cristo? 17 Hay un solo pan, del cual todos participamos; por eso, aunque somos muchos, conformamos un solo cuerpo. 18 Fíjense en el pueblo de Israel; los que comen de los animales que se ofrendan, son partícipes del altar. 19 ¿Qué quiero decir con esto? ¿Que el ídolo o los animales que se ofrendan a los ídolos son algo? 20 Lo que quiero decir es que los animales que ofrecen los no judíos, se ofrecen a los demonios, y no a Dios; y yo no quiero que ustedes tengan algo que ver con los demonios. 21 Ustedes no pueden beber de la copa del Señor, y también de la copa de los demonios; no pueden participar de la mesa del Señor, y también de la mesa de los demonios. 22 ¿O vamos a provocar a celos al Señor? ¿Acaso somos más fuertes que él?
Todo sea para la gloria de Dios
23 Todo me está permitido, pero no todo es provechoso; todo me está permitido, pero no todo edifica. 24 Ninguno debe buscar su propio bien, sino el bien del otro. 25 Ustedes coman de todo lo que se vende en la carnicería, y no pregunten nada por motivos de conciencia, 26 porque del Señor es la tierra y su plenitud. 27 Si algún incrédulo los invita, y ustedes aceptan la invitación, vayan y coman de todo lo que se les ofrezca, y no pregunten nada por motivos de conciencia. 28 Pero si alguien les dice: «Esto fue sacrificado a los ídolos», no lo coman, por causa de aquel que lo dijo y por motivos de conciencia. 29 Claro que me refiero a la conciencia del otro, no a la tuya. Pues ¿por qué se habría de juzgar mi libertad por la conciencia de otro? 30 Y si yo participo de la comida y doy gracias a Dios, ¿por qué he de ser censurado por aquello por lo cual doy gracias?
31 Así que, si ustedes comen o beben, o hacen alguna otra cosa, háganlo todo para la gloria de Dios. 32 No sean motivo de tropiezo para los judíos ni para los no judíos, ni para la iglesia de Dios. 33 Hagan lo que yo, que procuro agradar a todos en todo, y no busco mi propio beneficio sino el de muchos, para que sean salvos.
