The Tower of Babel
11 Now the whole earth had one language and one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there. 3 Then they said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick for stone, and they had asphalt for mortar. 4 And they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, and a tower whose top is in the heavens; let us make a name for ourselves, lest we be scattered abroad over the face of the whole earth.”
5 But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower which the sons of men had built. 6 And the Lord said, “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them. 7 Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from there over the face of all the earth, and they ceased building the city. 9 Therefore its name is called Babel, because there the Lord confused the language of all the earth; and from there the Lord scattered them abroad over the face of all the earth.
Shem’s Descendants
10 This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood. 11 After he begot Arphaxad, Shem lived five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
12 Arphaxad lived thirty-five years, and begot Salah. 13 After he begot Salah, Arphaxad lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
14 Salah lived thirty years, and begot Eber. 15 After he begot Eber, Salah lived four hundred and three years, and begot sons and daughters.
16 Eber lived thirty-four years, and begot Peleg. 17 After he begot Peleg, Eber lived four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.
18 Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu. 19 After he begot Reu, Peleg lived two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and daughters.
20 Reu lived thirty-two years, and begot Serug. 21 After he begot Serug, Reu lived two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.
22 Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor. 23 After he begot Nahor, Serug lived two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
24 Nahor lived twenty-nine years, and begot Terah. 25 After he begot Terah, Nahor lived one hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons and daughters.
26 Now Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran.
Terah’s Descendants
27 This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot. 28 And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. 29 Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. 30 But Sarai was barren; she had no child.
31 And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram’s wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. 32 So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran.
Promises to Abram
12 Now the Lord had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
2 I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
3 I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
4 So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. 5 Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother’s son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. 6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.
7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord. 9 So Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South.
Abram in Egypt
10 Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 And it came to pass, when he was close to entering Egypt, that he said to Sarai his wife, “Indeed I know that you are a woman of beautiful countenance. 12 Therefore it will happen, when the Egyptians see you, that they will say, ‘This is his wife’; and they will kill me, but they will let you live. 13 Please say you are my sister, that it may be well with me for your sake, and that I may live because of you.”
14 So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. 15 The princes of Pharaoh also saw her and commended her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house. 16 He treated Abram well for her sake. He had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male and female servants, female donkeys, and camels.
17 But the Lord plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife? 19 Why did you say, ‘She is my sister’? I might have taken her as my wife. Now therefore, here is your wife; take her and go your way.” 20 So Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him; and they sent him away, with his wife and all that he had.

La torre de Babel
11 Tenía entonces toda la tierra una sola lengua y unas mismas palabras. 2 Y aconteció que cuando salieron de oriente, hallaron una llanura en la tierra de Sinar, y se establecieron allí. 3 Y se dijeron unos a otros: Vamos, hagamos ladrillo y cozámoslo con fuego. Y les sirvió el ladrillo en lugar de piedra, y el asfalto en lugar de mezcla. 4 Y dijeron: Vamos, edifiquémonos una ciudad y una torre, cuya cúspide llegue al cielo; y hagámonos un nombre, por si fuéremos esparcidos sobre la faz de toda la tierra. 5 Y descendió Jehová para ver la ciudad y la torre que edificaban los hijos de los hombres. 6 Y dijo Jehová: He aquí el pueblo es uno, y todos estos tienen un solo lenguaje; y han comenzado la obra, y nada les hará desistir ahora de lo que han pensado hacer. 7 Ahora, pues, descendamos, y confundamos allí su lengua, para que ninguno entienda el habla de su compañero. 8 Así los esparció Jehová desde allí sobre la faz de toda la tierra, y dejaron de edificar la ciudad. 9 Por esto fue llamado el nombre de ella Babel, porque allí confundió Jehová el lenguaje de toda la tierra, y desde allí los esparció sobre la faz de toda la tierra.
Los descendientes de Sem

10 Estas son las generaciones de Sem: Sem, de edad de cien años, engendró a Arfaxad, dos años después del diluvio. 11 Y vivió Sem, después que engendró a Arfaxad, quinientos años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 12 Arfaxad vivió treinta y cinco años, y engendró a Sala. 13 Y vivió Arfaxad, después que engendró a Sala, cuatrocientos tres años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 14 Sala vivió treinta años, y engendró a Heber. 15 Y vivió Sala, después que engendró a Heber, cuatrocientos tres años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 16 Heber vivió treinta y cuatro años, y engendró a Peleg. 17 Y vivió Heber, después que engendró a Peleg, cuatrocientos treinta años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 18 Peleg vivió treinta años, y engendró a Reu. 19 Y vivió Peleg, después que engendró a Reu, doscientos nueve años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 20 Reu vivió treinta y dos años, y engendró a Serug. 21 Y vivió Reu, después que engendró a Serug, doscientos siete años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 22 Serug vivió treinta años, y engendró a Nacor. 23 Y vivió Serug, después que engendró a Nacor, doscientos años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 24 Nacor vivió veintinueve años, y engendró a Taré. 25 Y vivió Nacor, después que engendró a Taré, ciento diecinueve años, y engendró hijos e hijas. 26 Taré vivió setenta años, y engendró a Abram, a Nacor y a Harán.
Los descendientes de Taré
27 Estas son las generaciones de Taré: Taré engendró a Abram, a Nacor y a Harán; y Harán engendró a Lot. 28 Y murió Harán antes que su padre Taré en la tierra de su nacimiento, en Ur de los caldeos. 29 Y tomaron Abram y Nacor para sí mujeres; el nombre de la mujer de Abram era Sarai, y el nombre de la mujer de Nacor, Milca, hija de Harán, padre de Milca y de Isca. 30 Mas Sarai era estéril, y no tenía hijo. 31 Y tomó Taré a Abram su hijo, y a Lot hijo de Harán, hijo de su hijo, y a Sarai su nuera, mujer de Abram su hijo, y salió con ellos de Ur de los caldeos, para ir a la tierra de Canaán; y vinieron hasta Harán, y se quedaron allí. 32 Y fueron los días de Taré doscientos cinco años; y murió Taré en Harán.
Dios llama a Abram
12 Pero Jehová había dicho a Abram: Vete de tu tierra y de tu parentela, y de la casa de tu padre, a la tierra que te mostraré. 2 Y haré de ti una nación grande, y te bendeciré, y engrandeceré tu nombre, y serás bendición. 3 Bendeciré a los que te bendijeren, y a los que te maldijeren maldeciré; y serán benditas en ti todas las familias de la tierra. 4 Y se fue Abram, como Jehová le dijo; y Lot fue con él. Y era Abram de edad de setenta y cinco años cuando salió de Harán. 5 Tomó, pues, Abram a Sarai su mujer, y a Lot hijo de su hermano, y todos sus bienes que habían ganado y las personas que habían adquirido en Harán, y salieron para ir a tierra de Canaán; y a tierra de Canaán llegaron.
6 Y pasó Abram por aquella tierra hasta el lugar de Siquem, hasta el encino de More; y el cananeo estaba entonces en la tierra. 7 Y apareció Jehová a Abram, y le dijo: A tu descendencia daré esta tierra. Y edificó allí un altar a Jehová, quien le había aparecido. 8 Luego se pasó de allí a un monte al oriente de Bet-el, y plantó su tienda, teniendo a Bet-el al occidente y Hai al oriente; y edificó allí altar a Jehová, e invocó el nombre de Jehová. 9 Y Abram partió de allí, caminando y yendo hacia el Neguev.
Abram en Egipto
10 Hubo entonces hambre en la tierra, y descendió Abram a Egipto para morar allá; porque era grande el hambre en la tierra. 11 Y aconteció que cuando estaba para entrar en Egipto, dijo a Sarai su mujer: He aquí, ahora conozco que eres mujer de hermoso aspecto; 12 y cuando te vean los egipcios, dirán: Su mujer es; y me matarán a mí, y a ti te reservarán la vida. 13 Ahora, pues, di que eres mi hermana, para que me vaya bien por causa tuya, y viva mi alma por causa de ti.
14 Y aconteció que cuando entró Abram en Egipto, los egipcios vieron que la mujer era hermosa en gran manera. 15 También la vieron los príncipes de Faraón, y la alabaron delante de él; y fue llevada la mujer a casa de Faraón. 16 E hizo bien a Abram por causa de ella; y él tuvo ovejas, vacas, asnos, siervos, criadas, asnas y camellos. 17 Mas Jehová hirió a Faraón y a su casa con grandes plagas, por causa de Sarai mujer de Abram. 18 Entonces Faraón llamó a Abram, y le dijo: ¿Qué es esto que has hecho conmigo? ¿Por qué no me declaraste que era tu mujer? 19 ¿Por qué dijiste: Es mi hermana, poniéndome en ocasión de tomarla para mí por mujer? Ahora, pues, he aquí tu mujer; tómala, y vete. 20 Entonces Faraón dio orden a su gente acerca de Abram; y le acompañaron, y a su mujer, con todo lo que tenía.
