Christ Born of Mary

2 And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city.

4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6 So it was, that while they were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

Glory in the Highest

8 Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. 10 Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
15 So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger. 17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart. 20 Then the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told them.

Circumcision of Jesus

21 And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child, His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb.

Jesus Presented in the Temple

22 Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord” , 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

Simeon Sees God’s Salvation

25 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and devout, waiting for the Consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 So he came by the Spirit into the temple. And when the parents brought in the Child Jesus, to do for Him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took Him up in his arms and blessed God and said:

29 “Lord, now You are letting Your servant depart in peace,
According to Your word;
30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation
31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”
33 And Joseph and His mother marveled at those things which were spoken of Him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary His mother, “Behold, this Child is destined for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which will be spoken against 35 (yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul also), that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Anna Bears Witness to the Redeemer

36 Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, and had lived with a husband seven years from her virginity; 37 and this woman was a widow of about eighty-four years, who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 38 And coming in that instant she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of Him to all those who looked for redemption in Jerusalem.

The Family Returns to Nazareth

39 So when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 40 And the Child grew and became strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon Him.

The Boy Jesus Amazes the Scholars

41 His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast. 43 When they had finished the days, as they returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us? Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.”

49 And He said to them, “Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to them.

Jesus Advances in Wisdom and Favor

51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

El nacimiento de Jesús

2 Aconteció en aquellos días que salió un edicto de parte de César Augusto para levantar un censo de todo el mundo habitado. 2 Este primer censo se realizó mientras Cirenio era gobernador de Siria. 3 Todos iban para inscribirse en el censo, cada uno a su ciudad. 4 Entonces José también subió desde Galilea, de la ciudad de Nazaret, a Judea, a la ciudad de David que se llama Belén, porque él era de la casa y de la familia de David, 5 para inscribirse con María, su esposa, quien estaba encinta.

6 Aconteció que, mientras ellos estaban allí, se cumplieron los días de su alumbramiento 7 y dio a luz a su hijo primogénito. Lo envolvió en pañales y lo acostó en un pesebre porque no había lugar para ellos en el mesón.

Anuncio de los ángeles a los pastores

8 Había pastores en aquella región que velaban y guardaban las vigilias de la noche sobre su rebaño. 9 Y un ángel del Señor se presentó ante ellos y la gloria del Señor los rodeó de resplandor; y temieron con gran temor. 10 Pero el ángel les dijo:

—No teman, porque he aquí les doy buenas noticias de gran gozo que serán para todo el pueblo: 11 que hoy, en la ciudad de David, les ha nacido un Salvador, que es Cristo el Señor. 12 Y esto les servirá de señal: Hallarán al niño envuelto en pañales y acostado en un pesebre.

13 De repente, apareció con el ángel una multitud de las huestes celestiales que alababan a Dios y decían:

14 —¡Gloria a Dios en las alturas,

y en la tierra paz

entre los hombres de buena voluntad !

15 Aconteció que cuando los ángeles se fueron de ellos al cielo los pastores se decían unos a otros:

—Pasemos ahora mismo hasta Belén y veamos esto que ha sucedido, y que el Señor nos ha dado a conocer.

16 Fueron de prisa y hallaron a María y a José, y al niño acostado en el pesebre. 17 Al verle, dieron a conocer lo que les había sido dicho acerca de este niño. 18 Todos los que oyeron se maravillaron de lo que los pastores les dijeron; 19 pero María guardaba todas estas cosas meditándolas en su corazón. 20 Los pastores se volvieron glorificando y alabando a Dios por todo lo que habían oído y visto, tal como les había sido dicho.

Presentación de Jesús en el templo

21 Cuando se cumplieron los ocho días para circuncidar al niño, llamaron su nombre Jesús, nombre que le fue puesto por el ángel antes que él fuera concebido en el vientre.

22 Cuando se cumplieron los días de la purificación de ellos conforme a la Ley de Moisés, llevaron al niño a Jerusalén para presentarlo al Señor 23 (así como está escrito en la ley del Señor: Todo varón que abre la matriz será llamado santo al Señor ) 24 y para dar la ofrenda conforme a lo dicho en la ley del Señor: un par de tórtolas o dos pichones de paloma .

El cántico de Simeón

25 He aquí, había en Jerusalén un hombre llamado Simeón, y este hombre era justo y piadoso; esperaba la consolación de Israel y el Espíritu Santo estaba sobre él. 26 A él le había sido revelado por el Espíritu Santo que no vería la muerte antes que viera al Cristo del Señor. 27 Movido por el Espíritu, entró en el templo; y cuando los padres trajeron al niño Jesús para hacer con él conforme a la costumbre de la ley, 28 Simeón lo tomó en sus brazos y bendijo a Dios diciendo:

29 —Ahora, Soberano Señor,

despide a tu siervo en paz

conforme a tu palabra;

30 porque mis ojos han visto tu salvación

31 que has preparado en presencia

de todos los pueblos:

32 luz para revelación de las naciones

y gloria de tu pueblo Israel.

33 Su padre y su madre se maravillaban de las cosas que se decían de él. 34 Y Simeón los bendijo y dijo a María, su madre:

—He aquí, este es puesto para caída y para levantamiento de muchos en Israel, y para señal que será contradicha, 35 para que sean descubiertos los pensamientos de muchos corazones. Y una espada traspasará tu misma alma.

El testimonio de Ana

36 También estaba allí la profetisa Ana, hija de Fanuel, de la tribu de Aser. Ella era de edad avanzada, pues había vivido con su marido siete años desde su matrimonio 37 y había quedado como viuda hasta ochenta y cuatro años. No se apartaba del templo, sirviendo con ayunos y oraciones de noche y de día. 38 En la misma hora acudió al templo, y daba gracias a Dios y hablaba del niño a todos los que esperaban la redención en Jerusalén.

Niñez de Jesús en Nazaret

39 Cuando cumplieron con todos los requisitos de la ley del Señor, volvieron a Galilea, a su ciudad de Nazaret. 40 El niño crecía y se fortalecía, y se llenaba de sabiduría; y la gracia de Dios estaba sobre él.

El niño Jesús entre los maestros

41 Iban sus padres todos los años a Jerusalén para la fiesta de la Pascua. 42 Cuando cumplió doce años, subieron ellos a Jerusalén conforme a la costumbre de la fiesta. 43 Una vez acabados los días de la fiesta, mientras ellos volvían, el niño Jesús se quedó en Jerusalén; y sus padres no lo supieron. 44 Suponiendo que él estaba en la caravana, fueron un día de camino y lo buscaban entre los parientes y los conocidos. 45 Como no lo encontraron, volvieron a Jerusalén buscándole.

46 Aconteció que después de tres días lo encontraron en el templo sentado en medio de los maestros, escuchándolos y haciéndoles preguntas. 47 Todos los que lo oían se asombraban de su entendimiento y de sus respuestas. 48 Cuando lo vieron se maravillaron, y su madre le dijo:

—Hijo, ¿por qué has hecho así con nosotros? He aquí, tu padre y yo te buscábamos con angustia.

49 Entonces él les dijo:

—¿Por qué me buscaban? ¿No sabían que en los asuntos de mi Padre me es necesario estar?

50 Pero ellos no entendieron el dicho que les habló. 51 Descendió con ellos y fue a Nazaret, y estaba sujeto a ellos. Y su madre guardaba todas estas cosas en su corazón. 52 Y Jesús crecía en sabiduría, en estatura y en gracia para con Dios y los hombres.
