My Son, Be Wise

27 Do(A) not boast about tomorrow,
For you do not know what a day may bring forth.
2 (B)Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth;
A stranger, and not your own lips.
3 A stone is heavy and sand is weighty,
But a fool’s wrath is heavier than both of them.
4 Wrath is cruel and anger a torrent,
But (C)who is able to stand before jealousy?
5 (D)Open rebuke is better
Than love carefully concealed.
6 Faithful are the wounds of a friend,
But the kisses of an enemy are (E)deceitful.
7 A satisfied soul loathes the honeycomb,
But to a hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.
8 Like a bird that wanders from its nest
Is a man who wanders from his place.
9 Ointment and perfume delight the heart,
And the sweetness of a man’s friend gives delight by hearty counsel.
10 Do not forsake your own friend or your father’s friend,
Nor go to your brother’s house in the day of your calamity;
(F)Better is a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
11 My son, be wise, and make my heart glad,
(G)That I may answer him who reproaches me.
12 A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself;
The simple pass on and are (H)punished.
13 Take the garment of him who is surety for a stranger,
And hold it in pledge when he is surety for a seductress.
14 He who blesses his friend with a loud voice, rising early in the morning,
It will be counted a curse to him.
15 A (I)continual dripping on a very rainy day
And a contentious woman are alike;
16 Whoever restrains her restrains the wind,
And grasps oil with his right hand.
17 As iron sharpens iron,
So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
18 (J)Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit;
So he who waits on his master will be honored.
19 As in water face reflects face,
So a man’s heart reveals the man.
20 (K)Hell and Destruction are never full;
So (L)the eyes of man are never satisfied.
21 (M)The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold,
And a man is valued by what others say of him.
22 (N)Though you grind a fool in a mortar with a pestle along with crushed grain,
Yet his foolishness will not depart from him.
23 Be diligent to know the state of your (O)flocks,
And attend to your herds;
24 For riches are not forever,
Nor does a crown endure to all generations.
25 (P)When the hay is removed, and the tender grass shows itself,
And the herbs of the mountains are gathered in,
26 The lambs will provide your clothing,
And the goats the price of a field;
27 You shall have enough goats’ milk for your food,
For the food of your household,
And the nourishment of your maidservants.

27 No te jactes del día de mañana, porque no sabes qué dará de sí el día.

2 Que te alabe el extraño, y no tu propia boca;
el ajeno y no tus propios labios.
3 Pesada es la piedra;
también la arena pesa.
Pero el enojo del insensato es más pesado que ambas.
4 Cruel es la ira e impetuoso el furor; pero, ¿quién podrá mantenerse en pie delante de los celos?
5 Mejor es la reprensión manifiesta que el amor oculto.
6 Fieles son las heridas que causa el que ama,
pero engañosos son los besos del que aborrece.
7 La persona saciada desprecia el panal, pero para la hambrienta
todo lo amargo es dulce.
8 Como el ave que vaga lejos de su nido, así es el hombre que vaga lejos
de su lugar.
9 El aceite y el perfume alegran el corazón; y la dulzura de un amigo más que
el consejo del alma .
10 No abandones a tu amigo ni al amigo de tu padre,
y no vayas a la casa de tu hermano
en el día de tu infortunio;
pues es mejor el vecino cerca que
el hermano lejos.
11 Sé sabio, hijo mío, y alegra mi corazón; así tendré qué responder al que me ultraja.
12 El prudente ve el mal y se esconde, pero los ingenuos pasan y
reciben el daño.
13 Quítale su ropa al que salió fiador del extraño,
y tómale prenda al que se fía
de la mujer ajena.
14 Al que bendice a su prójimo en alta voz, madrugando de mañana,
se le contará por maldición.
15 Gotera continua en un día de lluvia
y mujer rencillosa son semejantes;
16 sujetarla es sujetar al viento
o al aceite en la mano derecha .
17 El hierro con hierro se afila
y el hombre afina el semblante
de su amigo.
18 El que cuida de su higuera comerá
de su fruto,
y el que atiende a su señor
logrará honra.
19 Como el agua refleja la cara, así el corazón del hombre refleja
al hombre.
20 El Seol y el Abadón nunca se sacian; así nunca se sacian los ojos del hombre.
21 El crisol prueba la plata, la hornaza
el oro;
y al hombre, la boca del que lo alaba.
22 Aunque machaques al insensato con el pisón de un mortero en medio del grano,
no se apartará de su insensatez.
23 Considera atentamente el estado
de tu ganado;
presta atención a tus rebaños.
24 Porque las riquezas no duran para siempre
ni se transmite una corona de generación en generación.
25 Saldrá la grama, aparecerá la hierba,
y serán recogidas las plantas de
las colinas.
26 Los corderos proveerán para tu vestido, y los machos cabríos para el precio del campo.
27 La abundancia de la leche de las cabras será para tu sustento
y para el sustento de tu casa y de tus criadas.
