Blessed Are The Meek

The be (happy) Attitudes

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. (Mat 5:5)

But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.
(Ps 37:11)

Meekness is not only Beatitude, it is a Fruit of the Spirit. Jesus proclaimed Himself to be “Meek and lowly”
Jesus, the master architect of the soul, establishes in detail the steps we must take to be happy in an unhappy world. He reveals the blueprint of happiness for all men and women to follow for all time.

First, as we have seen, there must be brokenness before God. Second, there must be mourning for wrongdoing. Third, there must be meekness.

The Meek Messiah

Remember to whom Jesus is speaking. At this point the Jews are living under sever political oppression. Since 63 BC they have lived under a series of brutal rulers appointed by Rome one of them, Herod the Great, executed nine of his ten wives merely on the suspicion of infidelity. He issued standing orders that his son was to be executed the day he died—so that at least someone would mourn his passing.

Jesus’ listeners are looking desperately for a messiah who will crush Roman imperialism. The Pharisees want a messiah of miracles. The Sadducees want a materialistic messiah. The political—activist Zealots want a military messiah.

Meekness or Weakness

So what happens? Along comes Jesus of Nazareth, whose teachings and miracles have aroused the entire nation, and anticipation builds among the people. Could this be the promised messiah? They hang on His every word, ”Happy are the meek…” A man in the crowd throws up his hands and says to his friends “can you believe this guy? Get serious! You don’t conquer Romans with meekness. Happy are the meek? Nonsense! Might makes right! Meekness is weakness!”

But meekness is not weakness. The meek are God’s gentlemen. The things of this world do not intimidate them. They are cool and calm in adversity. They have warm hearts, not hot heads.

Our culture has rejected meekness as a principle of happiness. This rejection of meekness creates a vacuum filled with barbaric behavior. We don’t want to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit whisper “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long—suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance”(Gal 5:22-23). We have rejected meekness as a path to happiness.

Does being meek mean we allow the aggressive to run over us? Does it mean we stand silent, head bowed, while being verbally abused? No. Meekness speaks the truth in love. It stands its ground calmly and resolutely.

Moses: Champion of Meekness

The Bible says, “Now Moses was a very humble man, more humble than anyone on the face of the earth”.

He was meek but was he weak? See him face the mighty Pharaoh and demand, “Let my people go!” See him lead a horde of escaped slaves across a desert wasteland for forty years, to a land flowing with milk and honey.

When God becomes angry with Israel—so much so that He is ready to slay every one of them—see Moses stand in intercession and say, If you kill them, Lord, kill me too!” God changes His mind because of Moses. That’s meekness. But it’s anything but weakness.

Paul: Model of Meekness

Eph 4:1-2
1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, 2With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;

Titus 3:2
2 To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

Col 3:12
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering;

1 Tim 6:11
11 But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness.

Paul was meek. But was he weak? When, in jail, the jailers discovered he was a Roman citizen and tried to release him secretly, Paul said, “Oh, no, you don’t! You put me in here publicly and you’re going to let me out publicly.”

Jesus: Meek but Not Weak

Or consider Christ Jesus our Lord, who said “Learn of me; for I am meek and Lowly in heart.”

See him as he invades the temple with a whip crying, ”It is written…my house will be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves”

Hear Him rebuke the Pharisees: “You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned to hell?”

Watch as Roman guards slap His face and mock Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!”

See Him now seated on His throne in Heaven. When He returns to the earth, He will rule the nations. He is meek. But He is anything but weak.

Mastery of Self

Vine’s Expository Dictionary:
It consists not in a person’s outward behavior only, nor yet in his relations to his fellow men; nor yet in his mere natural disposition. Rather it is an inwrought grace of the soul; and the exercises of it are first and chiefly towards God. It is that temper of spirit in which we accept His dealings with us as good, and therefore without disputing or resisting; Knowing that the insults and injuries that are afflicted us are permitted and employed by Him to chasten and purify His elect.

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (Phil 4:12)

If you had the opportunity to sit at the head table w/ Jesus in heaven would you wash feet to get there? When the disciples were arguing over who would do the foot washing because it was a servants job, Jesus was secure in who he was, He was willing to submit.

The most dangerous people in the world are the insecure. The insecure are into titles. The secure are into towels.

The meek are so secure in their relationship with God that they are not scared to be a servant.

The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth

Jesus Christ is coming back to earth again. He will literally rule this earth for a thousand years. When He returns, the meek will inherit the earth.

The first time He came, He was a babe in Bethlehem’s manger. The next time He comes, He will be King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

The first time He came, He rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. The next time He comes, He will split the eastern sky riding on a white horse, as a mighty conqueror.

The first time He came He was dragged before Pilate. The next time He comes, Pilate will bow down before Him and confess that He is Lord.

The first time He came, He was crucified on the cross. The next time He comes, He will sit on the throne His throne.

Remember: Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
