Canaanites Defeated at Hormah
21 The king of Arad, the Canaanite, who dwelt in the South, heard that Israel was coming on the road to Atharim. Then he fought against Israel and took some of them prisoners. 2 So Israel made a vow to the Lord, and said, “If You will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.” 3 And the Lord listened to the voice of Israel and delivered up the Canaanites, and they utterly destroyed them and their cities. So the name of that place was called Hormah.
The Bronze Serpent
4 Then they journeyed from Mount Hor by the Way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became very discouraged on the way. 5 And the people spoke against God and against Moses: “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and our soul loathes this worthless bread.” 6 So the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and many of the people of Israel died.
7 Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you; pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
8 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent, and set it on a pole; and it shall be that everyone who is bitten, when he looks at it, shall live.” 9 So Moses made a bronze serpent, and put it on a pole; and so it was, if a serpent had bitten anyone, when he looked at the bronze serpent, he lived.
From Mount Hor to Moab
10 Now the children of Israel moved on and camped in Oboth. 11 And they journeyed from Oboth and camped at Ije Abarim, in the wilderness which is east of Moab, toward the sunrise. 12 From there they moved and camped in the Valley of Zered. 13 From there they moved and camped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14 Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord:
“Waheb in Suphah,
The brooks of the Arnon,
15 And the slope of the brooks
That reaches to the dwelling of Ar,
And lies on the border of Moab.”
16 From there they went to Beer, which is the well where the Lord said to Moses, “Gather the people together, and I will give them water.” 17 Then Israel sang this song:
“Spring up, O well!
All of you sing to it—
18 The well the leaders sank,
Dug by the nation’s nobles,
By the lawgiver, with their staves.”
And from the wilderness they went to Mattanah, 19 from Mattanah to Nahaliel, from Nahaliel to Bamoth, 20 and from Bamoth, in the valley that is in the country of Moab, to the top of Pisgah which looks down on the wasteland.
King Sihon Defeated
21 Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 22 “Let me pass through your land. We will not turn aside into fields or vineyards; we will not drink water from wells. We will go by the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.” 23 But Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together and went out against Israel in the wilderness, and he came to Jahaz and fought against Israel. 24 Then Israel defeated him with the edge of the sword, and took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the people of Ammon; for the border of the people of Ammon was fortified. 25 So Israel took all these cities, and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon and in all its villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and had taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore those who speak in proverbs say:
“Come to Heshbon, let it be built;
Let the city of Sihon be repaired.
28 “For fire went out from Heshbon,
A flame from the city of Sihon;
It consumed Ar of Moab,
The lords of the heights of the Arnon.
29 Woe to you, Moab!
You have perished, O people of Chemosh!
He has given his sons as fugitives,
And his daughters into captivity,
To Sihon king of the Amorites.
30 “But we have shot at them;
Heshbon has perished as far as Dibon.
Then we laid waste as far as Nophah,
Which reaches to Medeba.”
31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 32 Then Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took its villages and drove out the Amorites who were there.
King Og Defeated
33 And they turned and went up by the way to Bashan. So Og king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 34 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, with all his people and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.” 35 So they defeated him, his sons, and all his people, until there was no survivor left him; and they took possession of his land.
Balak Sends for Balaam
22 Then the children of Israel moved, and camped in the plains of Moab on the side of the Jordan across from Jericho.
2 Now Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel. 4 So Moab said to the elders of Midian, “Now this company will lick up everything around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.” And Balak the son of Zippor was king of the Moabites at that time. 5 Then he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me! 6 Therefore please come at once, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
7 So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak. 8 And he said to them, “Lodge here tonight, and I will bring back word to you, as the Lord speaks to me.” So the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
9 Then God came to Balaam and said, “Who are these men with you?”
10 So Balaam said to God, “Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying, 11 ‘Look, a people has come out of Egypt, and they cover the face of the earth. Come now, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to overpower them and drive them out.’ ”
12 And God said to Balaam, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed.”
13 So Balaam rose in the morning and said to the princes of Balak, “Go back to your land, for the Lord has refused to give me permission to go with you.”
14 And the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, “Balaam refuses to come with us.”
15 Then Balak again sent princes, more numerous and more honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam and said to him, “Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: ‘Please let nothing hinder you from coming to me; 17 for I will certainly honor you greatly, and I will do whatever you say to me. Therefore please come, curse this people for me.’ ”
18 Then Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, “Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the word of the Lord my God, to do less or more. 19 Now therefore, please, you also stay here tonight, that I may know what more the Lord will say to me.”
20 And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, “If the men come to call you, rise and go with them; but only the word which I speak to you—that you shall do.” 21 So Balaam rose in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab.
Balaam, the Donkey, and the Angel
22 Then God’s anger was aroused because he went, and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. And he was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him. 23 Now the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand, and the donkey turned aside out of the way and went into the field. So Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back onto the road. 24 Then the Angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side. 25 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she pushed herself against the wall and crushed Balaam’s foot against the wall; so he struck her again. 26 Then the Angel of the Lord went further, and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And when the donkey saw the Angel of the Lord, she lay down under Balaam; so Balaam’s anger was aroused, and he struck the donkey with his staff.
28 Then the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam, “What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?”
29 And Balaam said to the donkey, “Because you have abused me. I wish there were a sword in my hand, for now I would kill you!”
30 So the donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I ever disposed to do this to you?”
And he said, “No.”
31 Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand; and he bowed his head and fell flat on his face. 32 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, “Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to stand against you, because your way is perverse before Me. 33 The donkey saw Me and turned aside from Me these three times. If she had not turned aside from Me, surely I would also have killed you by now, and let her live.”
34 And Balaam said to the Angel of the Lord, “I have sinned, for I did not know You stood in the way against me. Now therefore, if it displeases You, I will turn back.”
35 Then the Angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but only the word that I speak to you, that you shall speak.” So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
36 Now when Balak heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, which is on the border at the Arnon, the boundary of the territory. 37 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not earnestly send to you, calling for you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?”
38 And Balaam said to Balak, “Look, I have come to you! Now, have I any power at all to say anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I must speak.” 39 So Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kirjath Huzoth. 40 Then Balak offered oxen and sheep, and he sent some to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
Balaam’s First Prophecy
41 So it was, the next day, that Balak took Balaam and brought him up to the high places of Baal, that from there he might observe the extent of the people.

Israel destruye Arad
21 Cuando el rey cananeo de Arad, que habitaba en el Néguev, oyó que Israel iba por el camino de Atarim, combatió contra Israel y tomó cautivos a algunos de ellos. 2 Entonces Israel hizo un voto al SEÑOR diciendo: “Si de veras entregas a este pueblo en mi mano, yo destruiré por completo sus ciudades”.
3 El SEÑOR escuchó la voz de Israel y entregó a los cananeos en su mano . Luego Israel los destruyó por completo juntamente con sus ciudades. Por eso fue llamado el nombre de aquel lugar Horma .
La serpiente de bronce
4 Partieron del monte Hor con dirección al mar Rojo, para rodear la tierra de Edom. Pero el pueblo se impacientó por causa del camino, 5 y habló el pueblo contra Dios y contra Moisés, diciendo:
—¿Por qué nos has hecho subir de Egipto para morir en el desierto? Porque no hay pan ni hay agua, y nuestra alma está hastiada de esta comida miserable.
6 Entonces el SEÑOR envió entre el pueblo serpientes ardientes, las cuales mordían al pueblo, y murió mucha gente de Israel. 7 Y el pueblo fue a Moisés diciendo:
—Hemos pecado al haber hablado contra el SEÑOR y contra ti. Ruega al SEÑOR que quite de nosotros las serpientes.
Y Moisés oró por el pueblo. 8 Entonces el SEÑOR dijo a Moisés:
—Hazte una serpiente ardiente y ponla sobre un asta. Y sucederá que cualquiera que sea mordido y la mire, vivirá.
9 Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la puso sobre un asta. Y sucedía que cuando alguna serpiente mordía a alguno, si este miraba a la serpiente de bronce, vivía.
Israel rodea la tierra de Moab
10 Los hijos de Israel partieron y acamparon en Obot. 11 Partieron de Obot y acamparon en Iye-abarim, en el desierto que está frente a Moab, al oriente. 12 Partieron de allí y acamparon en el valle del Zered. 13 Partieron de allí y acamparon al otro lado del Arnón, en el desierto. El Arnón nace en el territorio de los amorreos, pues marca la frontera de Moab, entre los moabitas y los amorreos. 14 Por eso se dice en el libro de las batallas del SEÑOR:
“A Zahab junto a Sufá,
a los arroyos del Arnón,
15 y a la vertiente de los arroyos que se desvía al sitio de Ar
y se apoya en la frontera de Moab”.
16 De allí fueron a Beer . Este es el pozo del cual el SEÑOR dijo a Moisés: “Reúne al pueblo, y yo les daré agua”. 17 Entonces Israel cantó este cántico:
“¡Brota, oh pozo! ¡Cántenle!
18 Pozo que cavaron los jefes
y excavaron los nobles del pueblo
con el cetro y con sus báculos”.
Del desierto fueron a Mataná, 19 de Mataná a Najaliel y de Najaliel a Bamot. 20 Y de Bamot, en el valle que está en los campos de Moab, fueron a la cumbre del Pisga, que mira hacia Jesimón.
Israel derrota a los amorreos
21 Israel envió mensajeros a Sejón, rey de los amorreos, diciendo: 22 “Déjame pasar por tu tierra. No nos desviaremos por los campos ni por las viñas. Tampoco beberemos agua de los pozos. Iremos por el camino del Rey hasta que hayamos pasado por tu territorio”.
23 Pero Sejón no dejó pasar a Israel por su territorio. Más bien, reunió a todo su pueblo, salió al desierto contra Israel, fue a Jahaz y combatió contra Israel. 24 Pero Israel los hirió a filo de espada y tomó posesión de su tierra desde el Arnón hasta el Jaboc, hasta la frontera de los hijos de Amón, porque Jazer era la frontera de los hijos de Amón. 25 Israel tomó todas estas ciudades, y habitó en todas las ciudades de los amorreos, en Hesbón y en todas sus aldeas. 26 Porque Hesbón era la sede de Sejón, rey de los amorreos, quien había estado en guerra con el anterior rey de Moab y había tomado de su poder toda su tierra hasta el Arnón. 27 Por eso dicen los poetas:
Vengan a Hesbón, y sea reedificada. Sea reafirmada la ciudad de Sejón.
28 Porque fuego salió de Hesbón,
y llama de la ciudad de Sejón; consumió a Ar-moab
y las alturas más prominentes del Arnón.
29 ¡Ay de ti, oh Moab!
Has perecido, pueblo de Quemós.
A sus hijos dejó ir fugitivos
y a sus hijas cautivas
de Sejón, rey de los amorreos.
30 Su descendencia ha perecido desde Hesbón hasta Dibón.
Los asolamos hasta Nófaj,
que se extiende hasta Medeba.
31 Así Israel habitó en la tierra de los amorreos. 32 Moisés envió gente para espiar a Jazer, y tomaron sus aldeas echando a los amorreos que estaban allí.
Israel derrota al rey de Basán
33 Después se volvieron y subieron rumbo a Basán. Entonces Og, rey de Basán, salió al encuentro de ellos con todo su pueblo, para combatir en Edrei. 34 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Moisés: “No le tengas miedo, porque en tu mano he entregado a él, a todo su pueblo y su tierra. Tú harás con él como hiciste con Sejón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón”.
35 Así los mataron a él, a sus hijos y a toda su gente, hasta no dejarle ningún sobreviviente. Y tomaron posesión de su tierra.
Balac contrata a Balaam contra Israel
22 Partieron los hijos de Israel y acamparon en las llanuras de Moab, al otro lado del Jordán, frente a Jericó. 2 Balac hijo de Zipor había visto todo lo que Israel había hecho a los amorreos. 3 Moab tuvo mucho temor del pueblo, porque era numeroso, y se aterrorizó Moab ante los hijos de Israel. 4 Y dijo Moab a los ancianos de Madián:
—¡Ahora esta multitud lamerá todos nuestros contornos, como el buey lame la hierba del campo!
Balac hijo de Zipor era en aquel tiempo rey de Moab. 5 Y envió mensajeros a Balaam hijo de Beor, en Petor, junto al Río, en la tierra de los hijos de su pueblo para llamarlo diciendo: “He aquí un pueblo ha salido de Egipto y cubre la faz de la tierra, y ya está frente a mí. 6 Ahora, por favor, ven y maldíceme a este pueblo, porque es más fuerte que yo. Quizás yo pueda derrotarlo y echarlo de la tierra. Porque yo sé que aquel a quien tú bendices es bendito, y aquel a quien maldices es maldito”.
7 Los ancianos de Moab y los ancianos de Madián fueron llevando con ellos los honorarios del adivino. Llegaron a donde estaba Balaam y le comunicaron las palabras de Balac. 8 Y él les dijo:
—Pasen aquí la noche, y yo les daré respuesta según lo que me hable el SEÑOR.
Así que los principales de Moab se quedaron con Balaam. 9 Entonces Dios vino a Balaam y le preguntó:
—¿Quiénes son estos hombres que están contigo?
10 Balaam respondió a Dios:
—Balac hijo de Zipor, rey de Moab, me ha mandado a decir: 11 “He aquí que un pueblo ha salido de Egipto y cubre la faz de la tierra. Ahora, ven y maldícemelo; quizás así pueda yo combatir contra él y echarlo”.
12 Entonces Dios dijo a Balaam:
—No vayas con ellos ni maldigas al pueblo, porque es bendito.
13 Balaam se levantó de mañana y dijo a los principales de Balac:
—Regresen a su tierra, porque el SEÑOR ha rehusado dejar que yo vaya con ustedes.
14 Los principales de Moab partieron, y cuando llegaron a donde estaba Balac, le dijeron:
—Balaam rehusó venir con nosotros.
15 Balac volvió a enviar otros principales, más numerosos y más distinguidos que los anteriores. 16 Llegaron a Balaam y le dijeron:
—Así ha dicho Balac hijo de Zipor: “Por favor, no dejes de venir a mí, 17 porque ciertamente te honraré mucho y haré todo lo que tú me digas. Por favor, ven y maldíceme a este pueblo”.
18 Pero Balaam respondió y dijo a los servidores de Balac:
—Aunque Balac me diera su casa llena de plata y de oro, yo no podría transgredir el mandato del SEÑOR mi Dios para hacer cosa alguna, pequeña ni grande. 19 Ahora, por favor, permanezcan también ustedes aquí esta noche, y sabré qué más me dice el SEÑOR.
20 Entonces Dios vino a Balaam de noche y le dijo:
—Si los hombres han venido a llamarte, levántate y ve con ellos. Pero solo harás lo que yo te diga.
El ángel del SEÑOR resiste a Balaam
21 Entonces Balaam se levantó muy de mañana, aparejó su asna y se fue con los principales de Moab. 22 Pero el furor de Dios se encendió cuando él iba, y el ángel del SEÑOR se presentó en el camino como un adversario suyo.
Balaam iba montado sobre su asna, acompañado de dos de sus criados. 23 Y el asna vio al ángel del SEÑOR, quien estaba de pie en el camino con su espada desenvainada en la mano. El asna se apartó del camino y se fue por un campo. Y Balaam azotó al asna para hacerla volver al camino.
24 Entonces el ángel del SEÑOR se puso de pie en un sendero entre las viñas, el cual tenía una cerca a un lado y otra cerca al otro lado. 25 El asna vio al ángel del SEÑOR y se pegó contra la cerca, presionando la pierna de Balaam contra la cerca. Y este volvió a azotarla.
26 El ángel del SEÑOR pasó más adelante, y se puso de pie en un lugar angosto, donde no había espacio para apartarse a la derecha ni a la izquierda. 27 El asna, al ver al ángel del SEÑOR, se recostó debajo de Balaam. Y este se enojó y azotó al asna con un palo. 28 Entonces el SEÑOR abrió la boca del asna, y esta dijo a Balaam:
—¿Qué te he hecho para que me hayas azotado estas tres veces?
29 Balaam respondió al asna:
—¡Porque te burlas de mí! ¡Ojalá tuviera una espada en mi mano! ¡Ahora mismo te mataría!
30 El asna dijo a Balaam:
—¿Acaso no soy yo tu asna? Sobre mí has montado desde que me tienes hasta el día de hoy. ¿Acaso acostumbro hacer esto contigo?
Y él respondió:
—No.
31 Entonces el SEÑOR abrió los ojos a Balaam, y él vio al ángel del SEÑOR de pie en el camino, con su espada desenvainada en su mano. Balaam se inclinó y se postró sobre su rostro, 32 y el ángel del SEÑOR le dijo:
—¿Por qué has azotado a tu asna estas tres veces? He aquí, yo he salido como adversario, porque tu camino es perverso delante de mí. 33 El asna me ha visto y se ha apartado de mi presencia estas tres veces. Si no se hubiera apartado de mí, yo te habría matado a ti, y a ella habría dejado viva.
34 Entonces Balaam dijo al ángel del SEÑOR:
—He pecado. Es que yo no sabía que te habías puesto en el camino, contra mí. Pero ahora, si esto te parece mal, yo me volveré.
35 Y el ángel del SEÑOR dijo a Balaam:
—Ve con esos hombres, pero hablarás solo la palabra que yo te diga.
Balaam bendice a Israel
Así Balaam fue con los principales de Balac. 36 Y al oír Balac que venía Balaam, salió a su encuentro en una ciudad de Moab que está junto a la frontera del Arnón, en el extremo del territorio. 37 Entonces Balac dijo a Balaam:
—¿Acaso no envié yo a llamarte con urgencia? ¿Por qué no viniste a mí? ¿Acaso no puedo yo honrarte?
38 Balaam respondió a Balac:
—He aquí yo he venido a ti; pero ahora, ¿podré hablar cosa alguna? ¡La palabra que Dios ponga en mi boca, esa hablaré!
39 Entonces Balaam fue con Balac, y llegaron a Quiriat-juzot. 40 Luego Balac hizo matar toros y ovejas, y envió porciones a Balaam y a los principales que estaban con él.
41 Sucedió a la mañana siguiente que Balac tomó a Balaam y lo hizo subir a Bamot-baal. Desde allí Balaam vio un extremo del campamento.
