The Pharisees and Sadducees Seek a Sign
16 Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven. 2 He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’; 3 and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times. 4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And He left them and departed.

The Leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees
5 Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread. 6 Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”

7 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, “It is because we have taken no bread.”

8 But Jesus, being aware of it, said to them, “O you of little faith, why do you reason among yourselves because you have brought no bread? 9 Do you not yet understand, or remember the five loaves of the five thousand and how many baskets you took up? 10 Nor the seven loaves of the four thousand and how many large baskets you took up? 11 How is it you do not understand that I did not speak to you concerning bread?—but to beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” 12 Then they understood that He did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and Sadducees.

Peter Confesses Jesus as the Christ
13 When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?”

14 So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

20 Then He commanded His disciples that they should tell no one that He was Jesus the Christ.

Jesus Predicts His Death and Resurrection
21 From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.

22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!”

23 But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men.”

Take Up the Cross and Follow Him
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? 27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. 28 Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom.”

Los fariseos y saduceos piden señales
16 Se acercaron los fariseos y los saduceos, y para probarle le pidieron que les mostrara una señal del cielo. 2 Pero él les respondió diciendo: “Al atardecer dicen: ‘Hará buen tiempo, porque el cielo está enrojecido’; 3 y al amanecer dicen: ‘Hoy habrá tempestad, porque el cielo está enrojecido y sombrío’. Saben discernir el aspecto del cielo, pero no pueden discernir las señales de los tiempos. 4 Una generación malvada y adúltera pide señal, pero no le será dada ninguna señal, sino la señal de Jonás”.

Y dejándolos se fue.

Levadura de los fariseos y saduceos
5 Cuando los discípulos cruzaron a la otra orilla, se olvidaron de tomar consigo pan. 6 Entonces Jesús les dijo:

—Miren, guárdense de la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos.

7 Ellos discutían entre sí, diciendo:

—Es porque no trajimos pan.

8 Pero como Jesús lo entendió, les dijo:

—¿Por qué discuten entre ustedes que no tienen pan, hombres de poca fe? 9 ¿Todavía no entienden, ni se acuerdan de los cinco panes para los cinco mil hombres y cuántas canastas recogieron? 10 ¿Ni tampoco de los siete panes para los cuatro mil y cuántas cestas recogieron? 11 ¿Cómo es que no entienden que no les hablé del pan? ¡Pero guárdense de la levadura de los fariseos y de los saduceos!

12 Entonces entendieron que no les habló de guardarse de la levadura del pan, sino más bien de la doctrina de los fariseos y de los saduceos.

La confesión de Pedro
13 Cuando llegó Jesús a las regiones de Cesarea de Filipo, preguntó a sus discípulos diciendo:

—¿Quién dicen los hombres que es el Hijo del Hombre?

14 Ellos dijeron:

—Unos, Juan el Bautista; otros, Elías; y otros, Jeremías o uno de los profetas.

15 Les dijo:

—Pero ustedes, ¿quién dicen que soy yo?

16 Respondió Simón Pedro y dijo:

—¡Tú eres el Cristo, el Hijo del Dios viviente!

17 Entonces Jesús respondió y le dijo:

—Bienaventurado eres, Simón hijo de Jonás, porque no te lo reveló carne ni sangre, sino mi Padre que está en los cielos. 18 Mas yo también te digo que tú eres Pedro; y sobre esta roca edificaré mi iglesia, y las puertas del Hades no prevalecerán contra ella. 19 A ti te daré las llaves del reino de los cielos. Todo lo que ates en la tierra habrá sido atado en el cielo, y lo que desates en la tierra habrá sido desatado en los cielos.

20 Entonces mandó a los discípulos que no dijeran a nadie que él era el Cristo.

Jesús anuncia su muerte y victoria
21 Desde entonces, Jesús comenzó a explicar a sus discípulos que le era preciso ir a Jerusalén y padecer mucho de parte de los ancianos, de los principales sacerdotes y de los escribas, y ser muerto y resucitar al tercer día. 22 Pedro lo tomó aparte y comenzó a reprenderlo diciendo:

—Señor, ten compasión de ti mismo. ¡Jamás te suceda esto!

23 Entonces él volviéndose, le dijo a Pedro:

—¡Quítate de delante de mí, Satanás! Me eres tropiezo porque no piensas en las cosas de Dios, sino en las de los hombres.

Condiciones para seguir a Jesús
24 Entonces Jesús les dijo a sus discípulos:

—Si alguno quiere venir en pos de mí, niéguese a sí mismo, tome su cruz y sígame. 25 Porque el que quiera salvar su vida la perderá, y el que pierda su vida por causa de mí la hallará. 26 Pues, ¿de qué le sirve al hombre si gana el mundo entero y pierde su vida? ¿O qué dará el hombre en rescate por su vida? 27 Porque el Hijo del Hombre vendrá en la gloria de su Padre con sus ángeles, y entonces recompensará a cada uno conforme a sus hechos.

28 »De cierto les digo que hay algunos que están aquí que no gustarán la muerte hasta que hayan visto al Hijo del Hombre viniendo en su reino.
