Deuteronomy 29-30

The Covenant Renewed in Moab
29 These are the words of the covenant which the Lord commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, besides the covenant which He made with them in Horeb.

2 Now Moses called all Israel and said to them: “You have seen all that the Lord did before your eyes in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land— 3 the great trials which your eyes have seen, the signs, and those great wonders. 4 Yet the Lord has not given you a heart to perceive and eyes to see and ears to hear, to this very day. 5 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness. Your clothes have not worn out on you, and your sandals have not worn out on your feet. 6 You have not eaten bread, nor have you drunk wine or similar drink, that you may know that I am the Lord your God. 7 And when you came to this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out against us to battle, and we conquered them. 8 We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, to the Gadites, and to half the tribe of Manasseh. 9 Therefore keep the words of this covenant, and do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.

10 “All of you stand today before the Lord your God: your leaders and your tribes and your elders and your officers, all the men of Israel, 11 your little ones and your wives—also the stranger who is in your camp, from the one who cuts your wood to the one who draws your water— 12 that you may enter into covenant with the Lord your God, and into His oath, which the Lord your God makes with you today, 13 that He may establish you today as a people for Himself, and that He may be God to you, just as He has spoken to you, and just as He has sworn to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

14 “I make this covenant and this oath, not with you alone, 15 but with him who stands here with us today before the Lord our God, as well as with him who is not here with us today 16 (for you know that we dwelt in the land of Egypt and that we came through the nations which you passed by, 17 and you saw their abominations and their idols which were among them—wood and stone and silver and gold); 18 so that there may not be among you man or woman or family or tribe, whose heart turns away today from the Lord our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations, and that there may not be among you a root bearing bitterness or wormwood; 19 and so it may not happen, when he hears the words of this curse, that he blesses himself in his heart, saying, ‘I shall have peace, even though I follow the dictates of my heart’—as though the drunkard could be included with the sober.

20 “The Lord would not spare him; for then the anger of the Lord and His jealousy would burn against that man, and every curse that is written in this book would settle on him, and the Lord would blot out his name from under heaven. 21 And the Lord would separate him from all the tribes of Israel for adversity, according to all the curses of the covenant that are written in this Book of the Law, 22 so that the coming generation of your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a far land, would say, when they see the plagues of that land and the sicknesses which the Lord has laid on it:

23 ‘The whole land is brimstone, salt, and burning; it is not sown, nor does it bear, nor does any grass grow there, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, which the Lord overthrew in His anger and His wrath.’ 24 All nations would say, ‘Why has the Lord done so to this land? What does the heat of this great anger mean?’ 25 Then people would say: ‘Because they have forsaken the covenant of the Lord God of their fathers, which He made with them when He brought them out of the land of Egypt; 26 for they went and served other gods and worshiped them, gods that they did not know and that He had not given to them. 27 Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against this land, to bring on it every curse that is written in this book. 28 And the Lord uprooted them from their land in anger, in wrath, and in great indignation, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.’

29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

The Blessing of Returning to God
30 “Now it shall come to pass, when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind among all the nations where the Lord your God drives you, 2 and you return to the Lord your God and obey His voice, according to all that I command you today, you and your children, with all your heart and with all your soul, 3 that the Lord your God will bring you back from captivity, and have compassion on you, and gather you again from all the nations where the Lord your God has scattered you. 4 If any of you are driven out to the farthest parts under heaven, from there the Lord your God will gather you, and from there He will bring you. 5 Then the Lord your God will bring you to the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it. He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers. 6 And the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.

7 “Also the Lord your God will put all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who persecuted you. 8 And you will again obey the voice of the Lord and do all His commandments which I command you today. 9 The Lord your God will make you abound in all the work of your hand, in the fruit of your body, in the increase of your livestock, and in the produce of your land for good. For the Lord will again rejoice over you for good as He rejoiced over your fathers, 10 if you obey the voice of the Lord your God, to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this Book of the Law, and if you turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

The Choice of Life or Death
11 “For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. 12 It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 13 Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ 14 But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.

15 “See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil, 16 in that I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in His ways, and to keep His commandments, His statutes, and His judgments, that you may live and multiply; and the Lord your God will bless you in the land which you go to possess. 17 But if your heart turns away so that you do not hear, and are drawn away, and worship other gods and serve them, 18 I announce to you today that you shall surely perish; you shall not prolong your days in the land which you cross over the Jordan to go in and possess. 19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; 20 that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.”

29 Estas son las palabras del pacto que el SEÑOR mandó a Moisés que hiciera con los hijos de Israel en la tierra de Moab, además del pacto que hizo con ellos en Horeb.

2 Moisés llamó a todo Israel y les dijo: “Ustedes han visto todo lo que el SEÑOR hizo ante sus ojos en la tierra de Egipto al faraón, a todos sus servidores y a toda su tierra; 3 las grandes pruebas que sus ojos vieron, aquellas grandes señales y prodigios. 4 Pero hasta el día de hoy el SEÑOR no les ha dado corazón para entender ni ojos para ver ni oídos para oír.

5 “Yo los he conducido cuarenta años por el desierto. Sus vestidos no se han envejecido sobre ustedes ni sus zapatos se han gastado en sus pies. 6 No han comido pan ni tomado vino ni licor, para que sepan que yo soy el SEÑOR su Dios. 7 Así llegaron a este lugar, y cuando Sejón, rey de Hesbón, y Og, rey de Basán, salieron para combatir contra nosotros, los derrotamos. 8 Luego tomamos su tierra y la dimos por posesión a Rubén, a Gad y a la media tribu de Manasés. 9 Guarden, pues, las palabras de este pacto y pónganlas por obra, para que prosperen en todo lo que hagan.

10 “Todos ustedes están hoy delante del SEÑOR su Dios: los jefes de sus tribus , sus ancianos, sus oficiales, todos los hombres de Israel, 11 sus niños, sus mujeres y los forasteros que están en medio del campamento de ustedes, desde el que corta tu leña hasta el que saca tus aguas. 12 Estás por entrar en el pacto del SEÑOR tu Dios, y en el compromiso solemne que el SEÑOR tu Dios hace hoy contigo, 13 a fin de confirmarte hoy como pueblo suyo, y para que él sea tu Dios, como te ha prometido y como lo juró a tus padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob.

14 “No solo con ustedes hago yo este pacto y este compromiso solemne; 15 ciertamente es con el que está aquí con nosotros hoy, delante del SEÑOR nuestro Dios, y también con aquel que no está aquí con nosotros hoy. 16 Pues ustedes saben cómo habitábamos en la tierra de Egipto y cómo hemos pasado en medio de las naciones por las cuales han pasado. 17 Ustedes han visto sus abominaciones y sus ídolos de madera y de piedra, de plata y de oro, que tienen entre ellos. 18 No sea que haya entre ustedes hombre o mujer, familia o tribu, cuyo corazón se aparte hoy del SEÑOR nuestro Dios para ir a rendir culto a los dioses de aquellas naciones. No sea que haya entre ustedes una raíz que produzca una hierba venenosa y ajenjo, 19 y que al oír las palabras de este compromiso solemne, se bendiga a sí mismo en su corazón, diciendo: ‘Yo tendré paz, aunque ande en la dureza de mi corazón’, de modo que arrase la tierra regada junto con la sedienta.

20 “El SEÑOR no estará dispuesto a perdonarlo sino que subirán entonces cual humo el furor y el celo del SEÑOR contra ese hombre, y sobre él se asentarán todas las imprecaciones escritas en este libro. El SEÑOR borrará su nombre de debajo del cielo. 21 Él lo apartará para mal de entre todas las tribus de Israel, conforme a todas las imprecaciones del pacto escritas en este libro de la ley.

22 “La generación futura, sus hijos que se levantarán después de ustedes y el extranjero que vendrá de tierras lejanas, cuando vean las plagas de aquella tierra y las enfermedades que el SEÑOR habrá hecho brotar en ella, dirán: 23 ‘Toda su tierra está quemada con azufre y sal. No puede ser sembrada ni producirá; y en ella no crecerá ninguna planta, como cuando fueron trastornadas Sodoma, Gomorra, Adma y Zeboím, las cuales el SEÑOR destruyó en su ira y su furor’. 24 Y todas las naciones preguntarán: ‘¿Por qué ha hecho así el SEÑOR a esta tierra? ¿Por qué razón se ha encendido este gran furor?’. 25 Entonces les responderán: ‘Porque abandonaron el pacto del SEÑOR, Dios de sus padres, que él hizo con ellos cuando los sacó de la tierra de Egipto. 26 Ellos fueron a rendir culto a otros dioses; se postraron ante ellos, dioses que no habían conocido y que él no les había asignado. 27 Por eso se encendió el furor del SEÑOR contra esta tierra, para traer sobre ella toda maldición escrita en este libro. 28 El SEÑOR los desarraigó de su suelo con furor, con ira y con gran indignación, y los echó a otra tierra, como hoy’.

29 “Las cosas secretas pertenecen al SEÑOR nuestro Dios, pero las reveladas son para nosotros y para nuestros hijos, para siempre, a fin de que cumplamos todas las palabras de esta ley.

Promesas y exhortaciones del pacto
30 “Sucederá que cuando te hayan sobrevenido todas estas cosas, la bendición y la maldición que he puesto delante de ti, si consideras en tu corazón, en medio de todas las naciones donde el SEÑOR tu Dios te haya dispersado; 2 si vuelves, tú con tus hijos, al SEÑOR tu Dios y obedeces su voz con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma, conforme a todo lo que yo te mando hoy, 3 entonces el SEÑOR tu Dios también te restaurará de tu cautividad. Él tendrá misericordia de ti y volverá a reunirte de todos los pueblos a donde el SEÑOR tu Dios te haya dispersado. 4 Si eres arrojado hasta el extremo de los cielos, de allí te reunirá el SEÑOR tu Dios, y de allí te tomará. 5 Y te hará regresar el SEÑOR tu Dios a la tierra que tus padres tomaron en posesión, y tú la poseerás. Él te hará bien y te multiplicará más que a tus padres.

6 “El SEÑOR tu Dios circuncidará tu corazón y el corazón de tus descendientes, para que ames al SEÑOR tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma, a fin de que vivas. 7 Luego el SEÑOR tu Dios pondrá todas estas maldiciones sobre tus enemigos y sobre los que te aborrecen, y te persiguieron. 8 Pero tú volverás a escuchar la voz del SEÑOR, y pondrás por obra todos sus mandamientos que yo te mando hoy. 9 El SEÑOR tu Dios hará que sobreabundes en toda la obra de tus manos, en el fruto de tu vientre, en el fruto de tu ganado y en el fruto de tu tierra. Pues el SEÑOR volverá a gozarse en ti para bien, así como se gozó en tus padres, 10 si escuchas la voz del SEÑOR tu Dios para guardar sus mandamientos y sus estatutos escritos en este libro de la ley; si te vuelves al SEÑOR tu Dios con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma.

11 “Ciertamente este mandamiento que te mando hoy no es demasiado difícil para ti ni está lejos. 12 No está en el cielo, para que digas: ‘¿Quién subirá por nosotros al cielo y lo tomará para nosotros, y nos lo hará oír, a fin de que lo cumplamos?’. 13 Tampoco está al otro lado del mar, para que digas: ‘¿Quién cruzará el mar por nosotros y lo tomará para nosotros, y nos lo hará oír, a fin de que lo cumplamos?’. 14 Ciertamente muy cerca de ti está la palabra, en tu boca y en tu corazón, para que la cumplas.

15 “Mira, pues, yo pongo hoy delante de ti la vida y el bien, la muerte y el mal, 16 con el fin de que ames al SEÑOR tu Dios, de que andes en sus caminos y de que guardes sus mandamientos, sus estatutos y sus decretos, que yo te mando hoy. Entonces vivirás y te multiplicarás, y el SEÑOR tu Dios te bendecirá en la tierra a la cual entras para tomarla en posesión. 17 Pero si tu corazón se aparta y no obedeces; si te dejas arrastrar a inclinarte ante otros dioses y les rindes culto, 18 yo les declaro hoy que de cierto perecerán. No prolongarán sus días en la tierra a la cual, cruzando el Jordán, entrarán para tomarla en posesión.

19 “Llamo hoy por testigos contra ustedes a los cielos y a la tierra, de que he puesto delante de ustedes la vida y la muerte, la bendición y la maldición. Escoge, pues, la vida para que vivas, tú y tus descendientes, 20 amando al SEÑOR tu Dios, escuchando su voz y siéndole fiel. Porque él es tu vida y la prolongación de tus días, para que habites en la tierra que el SEÑOR juró que había de dar a tus padres Abraham, Isaac y Jacob”.
