6 And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord: and the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian seven years.

2 And the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel: and because of the Midianites the children of Israel made them the dens which are in the mountains, and caves, and strong holds.

3 And so it was, when Israel had sown, that the Midianites came up, and the Amalekites, and the children of the east, even they came up against them;

4 And they encamped against them, and destroyed the increase of the earth, till thou come unto Gaza, and left no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep, nor ox, nor ass.

5 For they came up with their cattle and their tents, and they came as grasshoppers for multitude; for both they and their camels were without number: and they entered into the land to destroy it.

6 And Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites; and the children of Israel cried unto the Lord.

7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the Lord because of the Midianites,

8 That the Lord sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage;

9 And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land;

10 And I said unto you, I am the Lord your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.

11 And there came an angel of the Lord, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12 And the angel of the Lord appeared unto him, and said unto him, The Lord is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

13 And Gideon said unto him, Oh my Lord, if the Lord be with us, why then is all this befallen us? and where be all his miracles which our fathers told us of, saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt? but now the Lord hath forsaken us, and delivered us into the hands of the Midianites.

14 And the Lord looked upon him, and said, Go in this thy might, and thou shalt save Israel from the hand of the Midianites: have not I sent thee?

15 And he said unto him, Oh my Lord, wherewith shall I save Israel? behold, my family is poor in Manasseh, and I am the least in my father's house.

16 And the Lord said unto him, Surely I will be with thee, and thou shalt smite the Midianites as one man.

17 And he said unto him, If now I have found grace in thy sight, then shew me a sign that thou talkest with me.

18 Depart not hence, I pray thee, until I come unto thee, and bring forth my present, and set it before thee. And he said, I will tarry until thou come again.

19 And Gideon went in, and made ready a kid, and unleavened cakes of an ephah of flour: the flesh he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot, and brought it out unto him under the oak, and presented it.

20 And the angel of God said unto him, Take the flesh and the unleavened cakes, and lay them upon this rock, and pour out the broth. And he did so.

21 Then the angel of the Lord put forth the end of the staff that was in his hand, and touched the flesh and the unleavened cakes; and there rose up fire out of the rock, and consumed the flesh and the unleavened cakes. Then the angel of the Lord departed out of his sight.

22 And when Gideon perceived that he was an angel of the Lord, Gideon said, Alas, O Lord God! for because I have seen an angel of the Lord face to face.

23 And the Lord said unto him, Peace be unto thee; fear not: thou shalt not die.

24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovahshalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

25 And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Take thy father's young bullock, even the second bullock of seven years old, and throw down the altar of Baal that thy father hath, and cut down the grove that is by it:

26 And build an altar unto the Lord thy God upon the top of this rock, in the ordered place, and take the second bullock, and offer a burnt sacrifice with the wood of the grove which thou shalt cut down.

27 Then Gideon took ten men of his servants, and did as the Lord had said unto him: and so it was, because he feared his father's household, and the men of the city, that he could not do it by day, that he did it by night.

28 And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, behold, the altar of Baal was cast down, and the grove was cut down that was by it, and the second bullock was offered upon the altar that was built.

29 And they said one to another, Who hath done this thing? And when they enquired and asked, they said, Gideon the son of Joash hath done this thing.

30 Then the men of the city said unto Joash, Bring out thy son, that he may die: because he hath cast down the altar of Baal, and because he hath cut down the grove that was by it.

31 And Joash said unto all that stood against him, Will ye plead for Baal? will ye save him? he that will plead for him, let him be put to death whilst it is yet morning: if he be a god, let him plead for himself, because one hath cast down his altar.

32 Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, Let Baal plead against him, because he hath thrown down his altar.

33 Then all the Midianites and the Amalekites and the children of the east were gathered together, and went over, and pitched in the valley of Jezreel.

34 But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon, and he blew a trumpet; and Abiezer was gathered after him.

35 And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh; who also was gathered after him: and he sent messengers unto Asher, and unto Zebulun, and unto Naphtali; and they came up to meet them.

36 And Gideon said unto God, If thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said,

37 Behold, I will put a fleece of wool in the floor; and if the dew be on the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the earth beside, then shall I know that thou wilt save Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said.

38 And it was so: for he rose up early on the morrow, and thrust the fleece together, and wringed the dew out of the fleece, a bowl full of water.

39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.

40 And God did so that night: for it was dry upon the fleece only, and there was dew on all the ground.

7 Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley.

2 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me.

3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand.

4 And the Lord said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

5 So he brought down the people unto the water: and the Lord said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink.

6 And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water.

7 And the Lord said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place.

8 So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

9 And it came to pass the same night, that the Lord said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand.

10 But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host:

11 And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.

12 And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude.

13 And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along.

14 And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.

15 And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the Lord hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.

16 And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man's hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.

17 And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do.

18 When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.

19 So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands.

20 And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the Lord, and of Gideon.

21 And they stood every man in his place round about the camp; and all the host ran, and cried, and fled.

22 And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the Lord set every man's sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth****tah in Zererath, and to the border of Abelmeholah, unto Tabbath.

23 And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.

24 And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Bethbarah and Jordan.

25 And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

Los madianitas oprimen a Israel

6 Los hijos de Israel hicieron lo malo ante los ojos del SEÑOR. Entonces el SEÑOR los entregó en mano de Madián durante siete años, 2 y la mano de Madián prevaleció contra Israel. Por causa de los madianitas los hijos de Israel se hicieron escondrijos en las montañas, y cuevas y lugares fortificados. 3 Porque sucedía que cuando Israel sembraba, subían contra él los madianitas, los amalequitas y los hijos del oriente. 4 Y acampando contra ellos, arruinaban las cosechas de la tierra hasta cerca de Gaza. No dejaban qué comer en Israel: ni ovejas ni toros ni asnos; 5 porque venían con sus ganados y con sus tiendas, siendo como langostas por su multitud. Ellos y sus camellos eran innumerables; así venían a la tierra para devastarla. 6 Israel era empobrecido en gran manera por causa de los madianitas. Y los hijos de Israel clamaron al SEÑOR.

7 Y sucedió que cuando los hijos de Israel clamaron al SEÑOR a causa de los madianitas, 8 el SEÑOR envió a los hijos de Israel un profeta, que les dijo:

—Así ha dicho el SEÑOR Dios de Israel: “Yo los hice subir de Egipto y los saqué de la casa de esclavitud. 9 Los libré de mano de los egipcios y de mano de todos los que los oprimían, a los cuales eché de delante de ustedes y les di su tierra. 10 Y les dije: ‘Yo soy el SEÑOR su Dios; no veneren a los dioses de los amorreos en cuya tierra habitan’. Pero no han obedecido mi voz”.

Gedeón ante el ángel del SEÑOR

11 Entonces el ángel del SEÑOR fue y se sentó debajo de la encina que está en Ofra, que pertenecía a Joás el abiezerita. Su hijo Gedeón estaba desgranando el trigo en el lagar, para esconderlo de los madianitas. 12 Y se le apareció el ángel del SEÑOR, y le dijo:

—¡El SEÑOR está contigo, oh valiente guerrero!

13 Y Gedeón le respondió:

—¡Oh, señor mío! Si el SEÑOR está con nosotros, ¿por qué nos ha sobrevenido todo esto? ¿Dónde están todas sus maravillas que nuestros padres nos han contado diciendo: “¿No nos sacó el SEÑOR de Egipto?”. Ahora el SEÑOR nos ha desamparado y nos ha entregado en mano de los madianitas.

14 El SEÑOR lo miró y le dijo:

—Ve con esta tu fuerza y libra a Israel de mano de los madianitas. ¿No te envío yo?

15 Entonces le respondió:

—¡Oh, Señor mío! . ¿Con qué podré yo librar a Israel? He aquí que mi familia es la más insignificante de Manasés, y yo soy el más pequeño en la casa de mi padre.

16 Pero el SEÑOR le dijo:

—Ciertamente yo estaré contigo, y tú derrotarás a los madianitas como a un solo hombre.

17 Y él le respondió:

—Si he hallado gracia ante tus ojos, dame, por favor, una señal de que eres tú el que hablas conmigo. 18 Te ruego que no te vayas de aquí hasta que yo vuelva a ti y traiga mi presente y lo ponga delante de ti.

Él respondió:

—Yo me quedaré hasta que vuelvas.

19 Gedeón entró, y preparó un cabrito y panes sin levadura de veinte kilos de harina. Puso la carne en una canasta y puso el caldo en una olla; luego se los trajo y se los presentó debajo de la encina.

20 Y el ángel de Dios le dijo:

—Toma la carne y los panes sin levadura; ponlos sobre esta peña y vierte el caldo.

Él lo hizo así. 21 Entonces el ángel del SEÑOR extendió el cayado que tenía en la mano, y con la punta tocó la carne y los panes sin levadura, y subió fuego de la peña, que consumió la carne y los panes sin levadura. Y el ángel del SEÑOR desapareció de su vista.

22 Dándose cuenta Gedeón de que era el ángel del SEÑOR, exclamó:

—¡Ay, SEÑOR Dios ! ¡Pues he visto cara a cara al ángel del SEÑOR!

23 El SEÑOR le dijo:

—La paz sea contigo. No temas; no morirás.

24 Entonces Gedeón edificó allí un altar al SEÑOR, y lo llamó el SEÑOR-shalom . Este permanece hasta el día de hoy en Ofra de los abiezeritas.

Gedeón contiende con Baal

25 Aconteció aquella misma noche que el SEÑOR le dijo:

—Toma un toro del hato que pertenece a tu padre y un segundo toro de siete años. Luego derriba el altar de Baal que tiene tu padre, y corta el árbol ritual de Asera que está junto a él. 26 Edifica ordenadamente un altar al SEÑOR tu Dios en la cumbre de este peñasco. Luego toma el segundo toro y sacrifícalo en holocausto sobre la leña del árbol ritual de Asera que habrás cortado.

27 Entonces Gedeón tomó diez hombres de sus siervos e hizo como el SEÑOR le había dicho. Pero sucedió que temiendo hacerlo de día, por causa de la casa de su padre y de los hombres de la ciudad, lo hizo de noche.

28 Cuando por la mañana se levantaron los hombres de la ciudad, he aquí que el altar de Baal había sido derribado, el árbol ritual de Asera que estaba junto a él había sido cortado, y el segundo toro había sido ofrecido en holocausto sobre el altar edificado. 29 Entonces se preguntaban unos a otros:

—¿Quién ha hecho esto?

Cuando indagaron y buscaron, dijeron:

—Gedeón hijo de Joás ha hecho esto.

Entonces los hombres de la ciudad dijeron a Joás:

30 —Saca fuera a tu hijo, para que muera; porque ha derribado el altar de Baal y ha cortado el árbol ritual de Asera que estaba junto a él.

31 Joás respondió a todos los que estaban frente a él:

—¿Contenderán ustedes por Baal? ¿Ustedes lo defenderán? ¡El que contienda por Baal, que muera antes de mañana! Si es un dios, que contienda por sí mismo, porque alguien ha derribado su altar.

32 Aquel día Gedeón fue llamado Jerobaal, que quiere decir: “Que Baal contienda con él”, por cuanto derribó su altar.

Gedeón prueba a Dios con el vellón

33 Todos los madianitas, los amalequitas y los hijos del oriente se reunieron, y cruzando el río acamparon en el valle de Jezreel. 34 Entonces Gedeón fue investido por el Espíritu del SEÑOR. Él tocó la corneta, y los de Abiezer acudieron para ir tras él. 35 Envió mensajeros por todo Manasés, y los de Manasés también acudieron para ir tras él. Asimismo, envió mensajeros a Aser, a Zabulón y a Neftalí, los cuales subieron a su encuentro. 36 Pero Gedeón dijo a Dios:

—Si has de librar a Israel por mi mano como has dicho, 37 he aquí que yo pondré un vellón de lana en la era. Si el rocío está solo en el vellón y toda la tierra queda seca, entonces sabré que librarás a Israel por mi mano como has dicho.

38 Y aconteció así. Cuando se levantó muy de mañana, exprimió el vellón y sacó de él el rocío, una taza llena de agua. 39 Pero Gedeón dijo a Dios:

—No se encienda tu ira contra mí; permite que hable una vez más. Solo probaré una vez más con el vellón: Por favor, que solo el vellón quede seco y que el rocío esté sobre todo el suelo.

40 Y Dios lo hizo así aquella noche. Sucedió que solo el vellón quedó seco y que el rocío estuvo sobre todo el suelo.

Gedeón escoge trescientos guerreros

7 Jerobaal (es decir, Gedeón) se levantó muy de mañana con todo el pueblo que estaba con él, y acamparon junto al manantial de Harod. El campamento de los madianitas estaba al norte del suyo, cerca de la colina de Moré, en el valle. 2 Y el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón:

—El pueblo que está contigo es demasiado numeroso para que yo entregue a los madianitas en su mano. No sea que Israel se jacte contra mí diciendo: “Mi propia mano me ha librado”. 3 Ahora pues, pregona a oídos del pueblo y di: “¡Quien tema y tiemble, que se vuelva!”.

Entonces Gedeón los probó , y se volvieron veintidós mil de ellos, y se quedaron diez mil. 4 Pero el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón:

—El pueblo aún es demasiado numeroso. Hazlos descender a las aguas y allí te los probaré. Del que yo te diga: “Este irá contigo”, ese irá contigo; pero de cualquiera que yo te diga: “Este no irá contigo”, el tal no irá.

5 Entonces hizo descender el pueblo a las aguas, y el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón:

—A todo el que lama el agua con su lengua, como lame el perro, lo pondrás aparte. Asimismo, a cualquiera que se doble sobre sus rodillas para beber.

6 El número de los hombres que lamieron el agua, llevándola a su boca con la mano, fue de trescientos. Todo el resto del pueblo se dobló sobre sus rodillas para beber agua . 7 Entonces el SEÑOR dijo a Gedeón:

—Con los trescientos hombres que lamieron el agua los libraré y entregaré a los madianitas en tu mano. El resto del pueblo, que se vaya cada uno a su lugar.

8 Tomaron en sus manos las provisiones del pueblo y las cornetas. Y él despidió a todos aquellos hombres de Israel, cada uno a su morada; pero retuvo a los trescientos hombres. El campamento de Madián estaba abajo, en el valle.

Gedeón espía el campamento de Madián

9 Aconteció que aquella noche el SEÑOR le dijo:

—Levántate y desciende contra el campamento, porque yo lo he entregado en tu mano. 10 Y si tienes miedo de descender, desciende al campamento tú con tu criado Fura, 11 y oirás lo que conversan. Luego tus manos se fortalecerán, y descenderás contra el campamento.

Entonces descendió él con su criado Fura hasta uno de los puestos avanzados de la gente armada del campamento. 12 Los madianitas, los amalequitas y todos los hijos del oriente se extendían por el valle, numerosos como langostas. Sus camellos eran incontables, numerosos como la arena que está a la orilla del mar. 13 Y cuando llegó Gedeón, he aquí que un hombre estaba contando un sueño a su compañero y decía:

—He aquí, he tenido un sueño. Veía un pan de cebada que rodaba hasta el campamento de Madián. Llegó hasta la tienda, y la golpeó de tal manera que cayó. Le dio la vuelta de arriba abajo y la tienda cayó.

14 Su compañero respondió y dijo:

—¡Esto no es otra cosa que la espada de Gedeón hijo de Joás, hombre de Israel! ¡Dios ha entregado en su mano a los madianitas con todo el campamento!

15 Y aconteció que cuando Gedeón oyó el relato del sueño y su interpretación, adoró. Después volvió al campamento de Israel y dijo:

—¡Levántate, porque el SEÑOR ha entregado el campamento de Madián en tu mano!

Gedeón derrota a los madianitas

16 Gedeón dividió los trescientos hombres en tres escuadrones, puso en la mano de todos ellos cornetas y cántaros vacíos con teas encendidas dentro de los cántaros, 17 y les dijo:

—Mírenme a mí y hagan lo que yo haga. Y he aquí que cuando yo llegue a las afueras del campamento, lo que yo haga, háganlo también ustedes. 18 Cuando yo toque la corneta con todos los que están conmigo, ustedes que estarán alrededor de todo el campamento también tocarán las cornetas y gritarán: “¡Por el SEÑOR y por Gedeón!”.

19 Llegaron, pues, Gedeón y los cien hombres que llevaba consigo a las afueras del campamento, a media noche , cuando acababan de relevar los guardias. Entonces tocaron las cornetas y quebraron los cántaros que llevaban en sus manos. 20 Los tres escuadrones tocaron las cornetas, y quebrando los cántaros tomaron las teas con su mano izquierda mientras que con la derecha tocaban las cornetas y gritaban:

—¡La espada por el SEÑOR y por Gedeón!

21 Cada uno permaneció en su lugar alrededor del campamento. Pero todo el ejército echó a correr gritando y huyendo. 22 Mientras los trescientos hombres tocaban las cornetas, el SEÑOR puso la espada de cada uno contra su compañero en todo el campamento.

El ejército huyó hasta Bet-sita, hacia Zereda , y hasta el límite de Abel-mejola junto a Tabat. 23 Y una vez convocados, los israelitas de Neftalí, de Aser y de todo Manasés persiguieron a los madianitas. 24 Entonces Gedeón envió mensajeros por toda la región montañosa de Efraín, diciendo: “Desciendan al encuentro de los madianitas y tomen antes que ellos los vados hasta Bet-bara y el Jordán”.

Y convocados todos los hombres de Efraín, tomaron los vados hasta Bet-bara y el Jordán. 25 Entonces capturaron a dos jefes de los madianitas: a Oreb y a Zeeb. Mataron a Oreb en la peña de Oreb, y a Zeeb lo mataron en el lagar de Zeeb. Siguieron persiguiendo a los madianitas y trajeron a Gedeón las cabezas de Oreb y de Zeeb, al otro lado del Jordán.
