God’s Covenant with David

7 Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2 that the king said to Nathan the prophet, “See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of God dwells inside tent curtains.”

3 Then Nathan said to the king, “Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you.”

4 But it happened that night that the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying, 5 “Go and tell My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6 For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and in a tabernacle. 7 Wherever I have moved about with all the children of Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, ‘Why have you not built Me a house of cedar?’ ” ’ 8 Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts: “I took you from the sheepfold, from following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the great men who are on the earth. 10 Moreover I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them anymore, as previously, 11 since the time that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies. Also the Lord tells you that He will make you a house.

12 “When your days are fulfilled and you rest with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, who will come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”

17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.

David’s Thanksgiving to God

18 Then King David went in and sat before the Lord; and he said: “Who am I, O Lord God? And what is my house, that You have brought me this far? 19 And yet this was a small thing in Your sight, O Lord God; and You have also spoken of Your servant’s house for a great while to come. Is this the manner of man, O Lord God? 20 Now what more can David say to You? For You, Lord God, know Your servant. 21 For Your word’s sake, and according to Your own heart, You have done all these great things, to make Your servant know them. 22 Therefore You are great, O Lord God. For there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23 And who is like Your people, like Israel, the one nation on the earth whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make for Himself a name—and to do for Yourself great and awesome deeds for Your land—before Your people whom You redeemed for Yourself from Egypt, the nations, and their gods? 24 For You have made Your people Israel Your very own people forever; and You, Lord, have become their God.

25 “Now, O Lord God, the word which You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house, establish it forever and do as You have said. 26 So let Your name be magnified forever, saying, ‘The Lord of hosts is the God over Israel.’ And let the house of Your servant David be established before You. 27 For You, O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, have revealed this to Your servant, saying, ‘I will build you a house.’ Therefore Your servant has found it in his heart to pray this prayer to You.

28 “And now, O Lord God, You are God, and Your words are true, and You have promised this goodness to Your servant. 29 Now therefore, let it please You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue before You forever; for You, O Lord God, have spoken it, and with Your blessing let the house of Your servant be blessed forever.”

David’s Further Conquests

8 After this it came to pass that David attacked the Philistines and subdued them. And David took Metheg Ammah from the hand of the Philistines.

2 Then he defeated Moab. Forcing them down to the ground, he measured them off with a line. With two lines he measured off those to be put to death, and with one full line those to be kept alive. So the Moabites became David’s servants, and brought tribute.

3 David also defeated Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah, as he went to recover his territory at the River Euphrates. 4 David took from him one thousand chariots, seven hundred horsemen, and twenty thousand foot soldiers. Also David hamstrung all the chariot horses, except that he spared enough of them for one hundred chariots.

5 When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadadezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians. 6 Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants, and brought tribute. So the Lord preserved David wherever he went. 7 And David took the shields of gold that had belonged to the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. 8 Also from Betah and from Berothai, cities of Hadadezer, King David took a large amount of bronze.

9 When Toi king of Hamath heard that David had defeated all the army of Hadadezer, 10 then Toi sent Joram his son to King David, to greet him and bless him, because he had fought against Hadadezer and defeated him (for Hadadezer had been at war with Toi); and Joram brought with him articles of silver, articles of gold, and articles of bronze. 11 King David also dedicated these to the Lord, along with the silver and gold that he had dedicated from all the nations which he had subdued— 12 from Syria, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the Philistines, from Amalek, and from the spoil of Hadadezer the son of Rehob, king of Zobah.

13 And David made himself a name when he returned from killing eighteen thousand Syrians in the Valley of Salt. 14 He also put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom he put garrisons, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the Lord preserved David wherever he went.

David’s Administration

15 So David reigned over all Israel; and David administered judgment and justice to all his people. 16 Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; 17 Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; Seraiah was the scribe; 18 Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David’s sons were chief ministers.

Dios promete a David una casa estable

7 Aconteció que cuando el rey habitaba ya en su casa, y el SEÑOR le había dado descanso de todos sus enemigos en derredor, 2 el rey dijo al profeta Natán:

—Mira; yo habito en una casa de cedro, mientras que el arca de Dios habita en una tienda.

3 Y Natán dijo al rey:

—Anda, haz todo lo que está en tu corazón, porque el SEÑOR está contigo.

4 Pero aconteció que aquella noche vino la palabra del SEÑOR a Natán, diciendo: 5 “Ve y di a mi siervo David que así ha dicho el SEÑOR: ‘¿Me edificarás tú una casa en la que yo habite?’. 6 Ciertamente yo no he habitado en una casa desde el día en que hice subir a los hijos de Israel de Egipto, hasta el día de hoy. Más bien, he estado peregrinando en una tienda y en un tabernáculo. 7 Dondequiera que he peregrinado con todos los hijos de Israel, ¿acaso he dicho una palabra a alguna de las tribus de Israel a la que yo comisioné para apacentar a mi pueblo Israel, preguntando: ‘¿Por qué no me han edificado una casa de cedro?’.

8 “Ahora pues, dirás a mi siervo David que así ha dicho el SEÑOR de los Ejércitos: ‘Yo te tomé del prado, de detrás del rebaño, para que fueras el soberano de mi pueblo Israel. 9 He estado contigo por dondequiera que has andado. He eliminado a todos tus enemigos de tu presencia, y haré que tu nombre sea grande, como el nombre de los grandes de la tierra. 10 Asimismo, dispondré un lugar para mi pueblo Israel y lo plantaré para que habite en su lugar sin que sea molestado más, ni los inicuos vuelvan a afligirlo como al comienzo, 11 desde el día en que constituí jueces sobre mi pueblo Israel. Y yo te daré descanso de todos tus enemigos.

“‘Además, el SEÑOR te declara que el SEÑOR te hará casa a ti. 12 Cuando se cumplan tus días y reposes con tus padres, yo levantaré después de ti a un descendiente tuyo, el cual procederá de tus entrañas y afirmaré su reino. 13 Él edificará una casa a mi nombre, y yo estableceré el trono de su reino para siempre. 14 Yo seré para él padre; y él será para mí hijo. Cuando haga mal, yo lo corregiré con vara de hombres y con azotes de hijos de hombre. 15 Pero no quitaré de él mi misericordia, como la quité de Saúl, al cual quité de tu presencia. 16 Tu casa y tu reino serán firmes para siempre delante de mí , y tu trono será estable para siempre’ ”.

17 Natán habló a David conforme a todas estas palabras y conforme a toda esta visión.

David alaba a Dios por su promesa

18 Entonces entró el rey David, se sentó delante del SEÑOR y dijo: “Oh SEÑOR Dios , ¿quién soy yo, y qué es mi casa para que me hayas traído hasta aquí? 19 Y aun esto te ha parecido poco, oh SEÑOR Dios , pues también has hablado del futuro de la casa de tu siervo. ¿Se comporta de esta manera el hombre, oh SEÑOR Dios ? 20 ¿Qué más puede añadir David al hablar contigo? Pues tú conoces a tu siervo, oh SEÑOR Dios . 21 Por causa de tu palabra y conforme a tu corazón, has realizado toda esta gran cosa para darla a conocer a tu siervo. 22 Por tanto, tú eres grande, oh SEÑOR Dios; porque no hay nadie como tú ni hay Dios aparte de ti, conforme a todo lo que hemos oído con nuestros oídos.

23 “¿Y qué otra nación hay en la tierra como tu pueblo Israel, al cual Dios fue para rescatarlo como pueblo para sí, a fin de darse renombre y hacer a favor de él hechos grandes y temibles, al expulsar las naciones y sus dioses ante tu pueblo que rescataste para ti de Egipto? 24 Has establecido para ti a tu pueblo Israel como pueblo tuyo para siempre; y tú, oh SEÑOR, has llegado a ser su Dios.

25 “Ahora pues, oh SEÑOR Dios, confirma para siempre la palabra que has hablado acerca de tu siervo y de su casa, y haz tal como has dicho. 26 Sea engrandecido tu nombre para siempre, a fin de que se diga: ‘El SEÑOR de los Ejércitos es Dios de Israel’. Que la casa de tu siervo David sea estable delante de ti; 27 porque tú, oh SEÑOR de los Ejércitos, Dios de Israel, lo has revelado al oído de tu siervo, diciendo: ‘Yo te edificaré casa a ti’. Por esto, tu siervo ha hallado valor en su corazón para dirigirte esta oración. 28 Ahora pues, oh SEÑOR Dios , tú eres Dios, y tus palabras son verdad, y has prometido este bien a tu siervo. 29 Y ahora, ten a bien bendecir la casa de tu siervo, a fin de que permanezca para siempre delante de ti. Porque tú lo has prometido, oh SEÑOR Dios , y con tu bendición la casa de tu siervo será bendita para siempre”.

Victorias militares de David

8 Aconteció después de esto que David derrotó a los filisteos y los sometió. Entonces David tomó Meteg-haamá de mano de los filisteos.

2 También derrotó a los moabitas y los midió con cordel. Los hizo tenderse en el suelo y midió dos cordeles para que murieran y un cordel entero para que vivieran. Los moabitas fueron hechos siervos de David y le llevaban tributo.

3 También derrotó David a Hadad-ezer hijo de Rejob, rey de Soba, cuando este iba a establecer su dominio hasta el río Éufrates . 4 David le capturó mil setecientos jinetes y veinte mil hombres de infantería. Y desjarretó David todos los caballos de los carros, pero dejó de ellos los de cien carros. 5 Los sirios de Damasco fueron para ayudar a Hadad-ezer, rey de Soba; y David hirió a veintidós mil hombres de los sirios. 6 Después David instaló puestos militares entre los sirios de Damasco. Así llegaron los sirios a ser siervos de David y le llevaban tributo.

Y el SEÑOR daba la victoria a David por dondequiera que iba.

7 David tomó los escudos de oro que llevaban los servidores de Hadad-ezer y los trajo a Jerusalén. 8 Asimismo, el rey David tomó gran cantidad de bronce de Beta y de Berotai, ciudades de Hadad-ezer.

9 Cuando Toi, rey de Hamat, oyó que David había derrotado a todo el ejército de Hadad-ezer, 10 Toi envió a su hijo Joram al rey David para saludarlo y felicitarlo por haber combatido contra Hadad-ezer y por haberlo derrotado, porque Toi estaba en guerra con Hadad-ezer. Joram llevó consigo objetos de plata, de oro y de bronce, 11 que el rey David también consagró al SEÑOR, junto con la plata y el oro que había consagrado de todas las naciones que había conquistado: 12 de Edom , de Moab, de los hijos de Amón, de los filisteos, de Amalec y del botín de Hadad-ezer hijo de Rejob, rey de Soba.

13 David adquirió renombre cuando regresó de derrotar a dieciocho mil hombres de Edom en el valle de la Sal. 14 Él instaló puestos militares en Edom; por toda Edom instaló puestos militares, y todos los edomitas llegaron a ser siervos de David.
