The Way, the Truth, and the Life

14 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. 2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. 4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?”

6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

The Father Revealed

7 “If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.”

8 Philip said to Him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us.”

9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father in Me? The words that I speak to you I do not speak on My own authority; but the Father who dwells in Me does the works. 11 Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the sake of the works themselves.

The Answered Prayer

12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. 13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.

Jesus Promises Another Helper

15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

Indwelling of the Father and the Son

19 “A little while longer and the world will see Me no more, but you will see Me. Because I live, you will live also. 20 At that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you. 21 He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to Him, “Lord, how is it that You will manifest Yourself to us, and not to the world?”

23 Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him. 24 He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father’s who sent Me.

The Gift of His Peace

25 “These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. 28 You have heard Me say to you, ‘I am going away and coming back to you.’ If you loved Me, you would rejoice because I said, ‘I am going to the Father,’ for My Father is greater than I.

29 “And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. 31 But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment, so I do. Arise, let us go from here.

The True Vine

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. 8 By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.

Love and Joy Perfected

9 “As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love. 10 If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.

11 “These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full. 12 This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. 14 You are My friends if you do whatever I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard from My Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you. 17 These things I command you, that you love one another.

The World’s Hatred

18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’

The Coming Rejection

26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.

Jesús: el camino, la verdad y la vida

14 »No se turbe el corazón de ustedes. Creen en Dios; crean también en mí. 2 En la casa de mi Padre muchas moradas hay. De otra manera, se los hubiera dicho. Voy, pues, a preparar lugar para ustedes. 3 Y si voy y les preparo lugar, vendré otra vez y los tomaré conmigo para que donde yo esté ustedes también estén. 4 Y saben a dónde voy, y saben el camino.

5 Le dijo Tomás:

—Señor, no sabemos a dónde vas; ¿cómo podemos saber el camino?

6 Jesús le dijo:

—Yo soy el camino, la verdad y la vida; nadie viene al Padre sino por mí. 7 Si me han conocido a mí, también conocerán a mi Padre ; y desde ahora lo conocen y lo han visto.

8 Le dijo Felipe:

—Señor, muéstranos el Padre y nos basta.

9 Jesús le dijo:

—Tanto tiempo he estado con ustedes, Felipe, ¿y no me has conocido? El que me ha visto, ha visto al Padre. ¿Cómo, pues, dices tú: “Muéstranos el Padre”? 10 ¿No crees que yo soy en el Padre y el Padre en mí? Las palabras que yo les hablo, no las hablo de mí mismo sino que el Padre que mora en mí hace sus obras. 11 Créanme que yo soy en el Padre, y el Padre en mí; de otra manera, crean por las mismas obras.

12 »De cierto, de cierto les digo que el que cree en mí, él también hará las obras que yo hago. Y mayores que estas hará, porque yo voy al Padre. 13 Y todo lo que pidan en mi nombre, eso haré para que el Padre sea glorificado en el Hijo. 14 Si me piden alguna cosa en mi nombre, yo la haré.

Jesús promete enviar el Espíritu

15 »Si me aman, guardarán mis mandamientos. 16 Y yo rogaré al Padre y les dará otro Consolador para que esté con ustedes para siempre. 17 Este es el Espíritu de verdad, a quien el mundo no puede recibir porque no lo ve ni lo conoce. Ustedes lo conocen, porque permanece con ustedes y está en ustedes. 18 No los dejaré huérfanos; volveré a ustedes. 19 Todavía un poquito y el mundo no me verá más; pero ustedes me verán. Porque yo vivo, también ustedes vivirán. 20 En aquel día ustedes conocerán que yo soy en mi Padre, y ustedes en mí, y yo en ustedes. 21 El que tiene mis mandamientos y los guarda, él es quien me ama. Y el que me ama será amado por mi Padre, y yo lo amaré y me manifestaré a él.

22 Le dijo Judas, no el Iscariote:

—Señor, ¿cómo es que te has de manifestar a nosotros y no al mundo?

23 Respondió Jesús y le dijo:

—Si alguno me ama, mi palabra guardará. Y mi Padre lo amará, y vendremos a él y haremos nuestra morada con él. 24 El que no me ama no guarda mis palabras. Y la palabra que escuchan no es mía sino del Padre que me envió.

25 »Estas cosas les he hablado mientras todavía estoy con ustedes. 26 Pero el Consolador, el Espíritu Santo que el Padre enviará en mi nombre, él les enseñará todas las cosas y les hará recordar todo lo que yo les he dicho.

27 »La paz les dejo, mi paz les doy. No como el mundo la da yo se la doy a ustedes. No se turbe su corazón ni tenga miedo. 28 Oyeron que yo les dije: “Voy y vuelvo a ustedes”. Si me amaran se gozarían de que voy al Padre, porque el Padre es mayor que yo.

29 »Ahora se lo he dicho antes que suceda para que, cuando suceda, crean. 30 Ya no hablaré mucho con ustedes porque viene el príncipe de este mundo y él no tiene nada en mí. 31 Pero para que el mundo conozca que yo amo al Padre y como el Padre me mandó, así hago.

»Levántense. ¡Vámonos de aquí!

Jesús: la vid verdadera

15 “Yo soy la vid verdadera, y mi Padre es el labrador. 2 Toda rama que en mí no está llevando fruto, la quita; y toda rama que está llevando fruto, la limpia para que lleve más fruto. 3 Ya ustedes están limpios por la palabra que les he hablado.

4 “Permanezcan en mí, y yo en ustedes. Como la rama no puede llevar fruto por sí sola si no permanece en la vid, así tampoco ustedes si no permanecen en mí. 5 Yo soy la vid, ustedes las ramas. El que permanece en mí y yo en él, este lleva mucho fruto. Pero separados de mí nada pueden hacer. 6 Si alguien no permanece en mí, es echado fuera como rama y se seca. Y las recogen y las echan en el fuego, y son quemadas.

7 “Si permanecen en mí y mis palabras permanecen en ustedes, pidan lo que quieran y les será hecho. 8 En esto es glorificado mi Padre: en que lleven mucho fruto y sean mis discípulos. 9 Como el Padre me amó, también yo los he amado; permanezcan en mi amor. 10 Si guardan mis mandamientos permanecerán en mi amor; como yo también he guardado los mandamientos de mi Padre y permanezco en su amor.

11 “Estas cosas les he hablado para que mi gozo esté en ustedes y su gozo sea completo. 12 Este es mi mandamiento: que se amen los unos a los otros como yo los he amado. 13 Nadie tiene mayor amor que este: que uno ponga su vida por sus amigos. 14 Ustedes son mis amigos si hacen lo que yo les mando. 15 Ya no los llamo más siervos porque el siervo no sabe lo que hace su señor. Pero los he llamado amigos porque les he dado a conocer todas las cosas que oí de mi Padre.

16 “Ustedes no me eligieron a mí; más bien, yo los elegí a ustedes y les he puesto para que vayan y lleven fruto, y para que su fruto permanezca a fin de que todo lo que pidan al Padre en mi nombre él se lo dé. 17 Esto les mando: que se amen unos a otros.

Los discípulos en el mundo hostil

18 “Si el mundo los aborrece, sepan que a mí me ha aborrecido antes que a ustedes. 19 Si fueran del mundo, el mundo amaría lo suyo. Pero ya no son del mundo sino que yo los elegí del mundo; por eso el mundo los aborrece. 20 Acuérdense de la palabra que yo les he dicho: ‘El siervo no es mayor que su señor’ . Si a mí me han perseguido, también a ustedes los perseguirán. Si han guardado mi palabra, también guardarán la de ustedes. 21 Pero todo esto les harán por causa de mi nombre, porque no conocen al que me envió. 22 Si yo no hubiera venido ni les hubiera hablado, no tendrían pecado; pero ahora no tienen excusa por su pecado. 23 El que me aborrece, también aborrece a mi Padre. 24 Si yo no hubiera hecho entre ellos obras como ningún otro ha hecho, no tendrían pecado. Y ahora las han visto, y también han aborrecido tanto a mí como a mi Padre. 25 Pero esto sucedió para cumplir la palabra que está escrita en la ley de ellos: Sin causa me aborrecieron .

26 “Pero cuando venga el Consolador, el Espíritu de verdad que yo les enviaré de parte del Padre, el cual procede del Padre, él dará testimonio de mí. 27 Además, ustedes también testificarán porque han estado conmigo desde el principio.
