Elijah Proclaims a Drought
17 And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As the Lord God of Israel lives, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, except at my word.”

2 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 3 “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 4 And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”

5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook. 7 And it happened after a while that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.

Elijah and the Widow
8 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 9 “Arise, go to Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. See, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.” 10 So he arose and went to Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, indeed a widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

12 So she said, “As the Lord your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.”

13 And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. 14 For thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the Lord sends rain on the earth.’ ”

15 So she went away and did according to the word of Elijah; and she and he and her household ate for many days. 16 The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the Lord which He spoke by Elijah.

Elijah Revives the Widow’s Son
17 Now it happened after these things that the son of the woman who owned the house became sick. And his sickness was so serious that there was no breath left in him. 18 So she said to Elijah, “What have I to do with you, O man of God? Have you come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to kill my son?”

19 And he said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him out of her arms and carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed. 20 Then he cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, have You also brought tragedy on the widow with whom I lodge, by killing her son?” 21 And he stretched himself out on the child three times, and cried out to the Lord and said, “O Lord my God, I pray, let this child’s soul come back to him.” 22 Then the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came back to him, and he revived.

23 And Elijah took the child and brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. And Elijah said, “See, your son lives!”

24 Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.”

Elijah’s Message to Ahab
18 And it came to pass after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the earth.”

2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab; and there was a severe famine in Samaria. 3 And Ahab had called Obadiah, who was in charge of his house. (Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly. 4 For so it was, while Jezebel massacred the prophets of the Lord, that Obadiah had taken one hundred prophets and hidden them, fifty to a cave, and had fed them with bread and water.) 5 And Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go into the land to all the springs of water and to all the brooks; perhaps we may find grass to keep the horses and mules alive, so that we will not have to kill any livestock.” 6 So they divided the land between them to explore it; Ahab went one way by himself, and Obadiah went another way by himself.

7 Now as Obadiah was on his way, suddenly Elijah met him; and he recognized him, and fell on his face, and said, “Is that you, my lord Elijah?”

8 And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’ ”

9 So he said, “How have I sinned, that you are delivering your servant into the hand of Ahab, to kill me? 10 As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to hunt for you; and when they said, ‘He is not here,’ he took an oath from the kingdom or nation that they could not find you. 11 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your master, “Elijah is here” ’! 12 And it shall come to pass, as soon as I am gone from you, that the Spirit of the Lord will carry you to a place I do not know; so when I go and tell Ahab, and he cannot find you, he will kill me. But I your servant have feared the Lord from my youth. 13 Was it not reported to my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the Lord, how I hid one hundred men of the Lord’s prophets, fifty to a cave, and fed them with bread and water? 14 And now you say, ‘Go, tell your master, “Elijah is here.” ’ He will kill me!”

15 Then Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely present myself to him today.”

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

17 Then it happened, when Ahab saw Elijah, that Ahab said to him, “Is that you, O troubler of Israel?”

18 And he answered, “I have not troubled Israel, but you and your father’s house have, in that you have forsaken the commandments of the Lord and have followed the Baals. 19 Now therefore, send and gather all Israel to me on Mount Carmel, the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

Elijah’s Mount Carmel Victory
20 So Ahab sent for all the children of Israel, and gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel. 21 And Elijah came to all the people, and said, “How long will you falter between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” But the people answered him not a word. 22 Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the Lord; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men. 23 Therefore let them give us two bulls; and let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other bull, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire under it. 24 Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.”

So all the people answered and said, “It is well spoken.”

25 Now Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one bull for yourselves and prepare it first, for you are many; and call on the name of your god, but put no fire under it.”

26 So they took the bull which was given them, and they prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even till noon, saying, “O Baal, hear us!” But there was no voice; no one answered. Then they leaped about the altar which they had made.

27 And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, “Cry aloud, for he is a god; either he is meditating, or he is busy, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28 So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. 29 And when midday was past, they prophesied until the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice. But there was no voice; no one answered, no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.” So all the people came near to him. And he repaired the altar of the Lord that was broken down. 31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Israel shall be your name.” 32 Then with the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord; and he made a trench around the altar large enough to hold two seahs of seed. 33 And he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood, and said, “Fill four waterpots with water, and pour it on the burnt sacrifice and on the wood.” 34 Then he said, “Do it a second time,” and they did it a second time; and he said, “Do it a third time,” and they did it a third time. 35 So the water ran all around the altar; and he also filled the trench with water.

36 And it came to pass, at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near and said, “Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that You are God in Israel and I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word. 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God, and that You have turned their hearts back to You again.”

38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The Lord, He is God! The Lord, He is God!”

40 And Elijah said to them, “Seize the prophets of Baal! Do not let one of them escape!” So they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Brook Kishon and executed them there.

The Drought Ends
41 Then Elijah said to Ahab, “Go up, eat and drink; for there is the sound of abundance of rain.” 42 So Ahab went up to eat and drink. And Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; then he bowed down on the ground, and put his face between his knees, 43 and said to his servant, “Go up now, look toward the sea.”

So he went up and looked, and said, “There is nothing.” And seven times he said, “Go again.”

44 Then it came to pass the seventh time, that he said, “There is a cloud, as small as a man’s hand, rising out of the sea!” So he said, “Go up, say to Ahab, ‘Prepare your chariot, and go down before the rain stops you.’ ”

45 Now it happened in the meantime that the sky became black with clouds and wind, and there was a heavy rain. So Ahab rode away and went to Jezreel. 46 Then the hand of the Lord came upon Elijah; and he girded up his loins and ran ahead of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

Elías predice la sequía
17 Entonces Elías el tisbita, que era uno de los moradores de Galaad, dijo a Acab:

—¡Vive el SEÑOR Dios de Israel, a quien sirvo, que no habrá rocío ni lluvia en estos años, sino por mi palabra!

2 Entonces la palabra del SEÑOR vino a él diciendo:

3 —Apártate de aquí, dirígete al oriente y escóndete junto al arroyo de Querit, que está al frente del Jordán. 4 Y sucederá que beberás del arroyo, y yo he mandado a los cuervos que te sustenten allí.

5 Elías fue e hizo conforme a la palabra del SEÑOR. Fue y habitó junto al arroyo de Querit, que está al frente del Jordán. 6 Los cuervos le traían pan y carne por la mañana, y pan y carne por la tarde; y bebía del arroyo. 7 Pero sucedió que después de algunos días se secó el arroyo, porque no había llovido en la tierra.

Elías y la viuda en Sarepta
8 Entonces la palabra del SEÑOR vino a Elías diciendo:

9 —Levántate, ve a Sarepta de Sidón y habita allí. He aquí, yo he designado allí a una mujer viuda para que te sustente.

10 Entonces se levantó y se fue a Sarepta. Cuando llegó a la puerta de la ciudad, he aquí una mujer viuda que estaba allí recogiendo leña. Él la llamó y le dijo:

—Por favor, tráeme un poco de agua en un vaso, para que beba.

11 Cuando ella iba a traérsela, la llamó y le dijo:

—Por favor, tráeme también un poco de pan en tu mano.

12 Ella respondió:

—¡Vive el SEÑOR, tu Dios, que no tengo pan cocido! Solamente tengo un puñado de harina en una tinaja y un poco de aceite en una botella. Y he aquí que estaba recogiendo un par de leños, para entrar y prepararlo para mí y para mi hijo, a fin de que lo comamos y muramos.

13 Entonces Elías le dijo:

—No tengas temor. Ve, haz como has dicho; pero de ello hazme a mí primero una torta pequeña y tráemela. Después harás para ti y para tu hijo. 14 Porque así ha dicho el SEÑOR Dios de Israel: “La harina de la tinaja no se acabará, y el aceite de la botella no faltará hasta el día en que el SEÑOR dé lluvia sobre la superficie de la tierra”.

15 Entonces ella fue e hizo conforme a la palabra de Elías; y comieron él, ella y su familia, por mucho tiempo. 16 La harina de la tinaja no se acabó ni faltó el aceite de la botella, conforme a la palabra que el SEÑOR había dicho por medio de Elías.

17 Aconteció después de estas cosas que cayó enfermo el hijo de la mujer, la dueña de casa, y su enfermedad fue tan grave que no quedó en él aliento. 18 Entonces ella dijo a Elías:

—¿Qué tengo yo contigo, oh hombre de Dios? ¿Has venido a mí para traer a la memoria mis iniquidades y hacer morir a mi hijo?

19 Y él le respondió:

—Dame tu hijo.

Lo tomó del seno de ella, lo llevó al altillo donde él habitaba y lo acostó sobre su cama. 20 Entonces, clamando al SEÑOR, dijo:

—¡Oh SEÑOR, Dios mío! ¿Aun a la viuda en cuya casa estoy hospedado has afligido, haciendo morir a su hijo?

21 Luego se tendió tres veces sobre el niño y clamó al SEÑOR diciendo:

—¡Oh SEÑOR, Dios mío, te ruego que el alma de este niño vuelva a su cuerpo!

22 El SEÑOR escuchó la voz de Elías, y el alma del niño volvió a su cuerpo, y revivió. 23 Elías tomó al niño, lo bajó del altillo a la casa y lo entregó a su madre. Luego Elías dijo:

—¡Mira, tu hijo está vivo!

24 Entonces la mujer dijo a Elías:

—¡Ahora reconozco que tú eres un hombre de Dios y que la palabra del SEÑOR es verdad en tu boca!

Elías se presenta ante Acab
18 Sucedió que después de mucho tiempo, al tercer año, vino la palabra del SEÑOR a Elías, diciendo:

—Ve, preséntate ante Acab, y yo enviaré lluvia sobre la faz de la tierra.

2 Elías fue para presentarse ante Acab. Había gran hambre en Samaria. 3 Entonces Acab llamó a Abdías, el administrador del palacio (Abdías era muy temeroso del SEÑOR. 4 Y sucedió que cuando Jezabel destruía a los profetas del SEÑOR, Abdías tomó a cien de ellos y los escondió de cincuenta en cincuenta en una cueva, y los sustentó con pan y agua). 5 Acab dijo a Abdías:

—Ve por la tierra a todos los manantiales de agua y a todos los arroyos; quizás hallemos pasto con que podamos conservar con vida a los caballos y a las mulas, y no tengamos que eliminar algunos de los animales.

6 Se repartieron el territorio entre ellos para recorrerlo; Acab se fue solo por un camino, y Abdías se fue solo por otro. 7 Sucedió que cuando Abdías iba por el camino, he aquí que Elías venía a su encuentro; y como lo reconoció, se postró sobre su rostro y preguntó:

—¿Eres tú Elías, mi señor?

8 Y le respondió:

—Sí, yo soy. Ve y di a tu señor: “Elías está aquí”.

9 Pero él dijo:

—¿En qué he pecado para que tú entregues a tu siervo en mano de Acab, para que me mate? 10 ¡Vive el SEÑOR tu Dios, que no ha habido nación ni reino adonde mi señor no haya enviado a buscarte! Cuando ellos respondían: “No está”, hacía jurar al reino y a la nación que no te habían hallado. 11 Y ahora tú dices: “Ve y di a tu señor: ‘Elías está aquí’ ”. 12 Lo que sucederá es que después que yo me haya alejado de ti, el Espíritu del SEÑOR te llevará adonde yo no sepa, y habiendo yo ido para informar a Acab, si él no te halla, me matará. Tu siervo teme al SEÑOR desde su juventud. 13 ¿No le han contado a mi señor lo que hice cuando Jezabel mataba a los profetas del SEÑOR, cómo escondí en una cueva a cien de ellos de cincuenta en cincuenta y los sustenté con pan y agua? 14 Y ahora tú dices: “Ve y di a tu señor: ‘Aquí está Elías’ ”. ¡Él me matará!

15 Y Elías dijo:

—¡Vive el SEÑOR de los Ejércitos, a quien sirvo, que hoy me presentaré a él!

16 Entonces Abdías fue al encuentro de Acab y le informó. Acab fue al encuentro de Elías; 17 y sucedió que cuando Acab vio a Elías, le dijo:

—¿Eres tú, el que está trastornando a Israel?

18 Y él respondió:

—Yo no he trastornado a Israel, sino tú y tu casa paterna, al haber abandonado los mandamientos del SEÑOR y al haber seguido a los Baales. 19 Ahora pues, manda que se reúnan conmigo en el monte Carmelo todo Israel, los cuatrocientos cincuenta profetas de Baal y los cuatrocientos profetas de Asera que comen de la mesa de Jezabel.

Elías elimina a los profetas de Baal
20 Entonces Acab convocó a todos los hijos de Israel y reunió a los profetas en el monte Carmelo. 21 Elías se acercó a todo el pueblo y dijo:

—¿Hasta cuándo vacilarán entre dos opiniones? Si el SEÑOR es Dios, ¡síganlo! Y si Baal, ¡síganlo!

Pero el pueblo no le respondió nada. 22 Entonces Elías volvió a decir al pueblo:

—Solo yo he quedado como profeta del SEÑOR, pero de los profetas de Baal hay cuatrocientos cincuenta hombres. 23 Dennos, pues, dos toros. Escojan ellos un toro para sí, córtenlo en pedazos y pónganlo sobre la leña; pero no pongan fuego. Yo prepararé el otro toro y lo pondré sobre la leña, pero no pondré fuego. 24 Luego invoquen ustedes el nombre de su dios, y yo invocaré el nombre del SEÑOR. El Dios que responda con fuego, ¡ese es Dios!

Todo el pueblo respondió y dijo:

—¡Bien dicho!

25 Entonces Elías dijo a los profetas de Baal:

—Escojan el toro y prepárenlo ustedes primero, porque ustedes son la mayoría. Invoquen el nombre de su dios, pero no pongan fuego.

26 Ellos tomaron el toro que les fue dado, y lo prepararon. Luego invocaron el nombre de Baal desde la mañana hasta el mediodía, diciendo:

—¡Oh Baal, respóndenos!

Pero no hubo voz ni quien respondiera. Mientras tanto ellos danzaban junto al altar que habían hecho.

27 Y sucedió que hacia el mediodía, Elías se burlaba de ellos diciendo:

—¡Griten a gran voz, porque es un dios! Quizás está meditando, o está ocupado, o está de viaje. Quizás está dormido y hay que despertarlo.

28 Ellos clamaban a gran voz y se sajaban el cuerpo con espadas y con lanzas, conforme a su costumbre, hasta hacer chorrear la sangre sobre ellos. 29 Y sucedió que cuando pasó el mediodía, ellos seguían profetizando frenéticamente hasta la hora de ofrecer la ofrenda vegetal, y no había voz ni quien respondiera ni escuchara.

30 Entonces Elías dijo a todo el pueblo:

—¡Acérquense a mí!

Todo el pueblo se acercó a él. Luego él reparó el altar del SEÑOR que estaba arruinado. 31 Elías tomó doce piedras, conforme al número de las tribus de los hijos de Jacob, a quien le vino palabra del SEÑOR diciendo: “Israel será tu nombre” . 32 Y edificó con las piedras un altar en el nombre del SEÑOR. Después hizo una zanja alrededor del altar, en la cual pudieran caber quince litros de agua. 33 Luego arregló la leña, cortó el toro en pedazos y los puso sobre la leña. 34 Entonces dijo:

—Llenen cuatro cántaros de agua y derrámenla sobre el holocausto y sobre la leña.

Luego dijo:

—Háganlo por segunda vez.

Y lo hicieron por segunda vez. Dijo aún:

—Háganlo por tercera vez.

Y lo hicieron por tercera vez, 35 de modo que el agua corría alrededor del altar y llenó también la zanja. 36 Cuando llegó la hora de presentar la ofrenda vegetal, se acercó el profeta Elías y dijo:

—¡Oh SEÑOR, Dios de Abraham, de Isaac y de Israel, sea hoy manifiesto que tú eres Dios en Israel y que yo soy tu siervo; y que por tu palabra he hecho todas estas cosas! 37 Respóndeme, oh SEÑOR; respóndeme, para que este pueblo reconozca que tú, oh SEÑOR, eres Dios, y que tú haces volver el corazón de ellos.

38 Entonces cayó fuego del SEÑOR, que consumió el holocausto, la leña, las piedras y el polvo; y lamió el agua que estaba en la zanja. 39 Al verlo toda la gente, se postraron sobre sus rostros y dijeron:

—¡El SEÑOR es Dios! ¡El SEÑOR es Dios!

40 Entonces Elías les dijo:

—¡Prendan a los profetas de Baal! ¡Que no escape ninguno de ellos!

Los prendieron, y Elías los hizo descender al arroyo de Quisón, y allí los ****lló.

Elías anuncia el fin de la sequía
41 Entonces Elías dijo a Acab:

—Sube, come y bebe; porque se oye el ruido de una fuerte lluvia.

42 Acab subió para comer y beber. Entonces Elías subió a la cumbre del Carmelo, y postrándose en tierra puso su rostro entre sus rodillas. 43 Luego dijo a su criado:

—Sube, por favor, y mira hacia el mar.

Él subió, miró y dijo:

—No hay nada.

Él le volvió a decir:

—Vuelve siete veces.

44 A la séptima vez dijo:

—He aquí, veo una pequeña nube, como la palma de la mano de un hombre, que sube del mar.

Entonces él dijo:

—Ve y di a Acab: “Unce tu carro y desciende, no sea que te detenga la lluvia”.

45 Y aconteció que mientras tanto los cielos se oscurecieron con nubes y viento, y cayó una fuerte lluvia. Acab subió al carro y fue a Jezreel; 46 pero la mano del SEÑOR estuvo sobre Elías, quien ciñó sus lomos y fue corriendo delante de Acab hasta la entrada de Jezreel.
