Phones

Reading Iny's response to the sirens and her writing about the phones. Do you remember when we picked up the phone (without a dial on the face) and told the operator the number. I still remember mine being 792W. What was with the "W". The party lines. We had to get a private line because Dad couldn't get on the phone sometimes when the base needed him because of the other person sharing the line liked to talk.

Re: Phones

Kathi,
I don't remember the ones without a dial, but in town our prefix was Juniper and then the number (this became 58) I'm not sure where the 7 came from but when we were in high school we could just dial 7 and then the number. (remember the song beechwood 45789?) At the base it was 832, so I think we just dialed 2 and the number?
Looking in the school phone book from our sophmore year your number was 587-4568 and you lived at 1145 N. 9th E. I don't remember getting a phone book like this after our sophmore year.

Re: Re: Phones

I remember most of my phone numbers from the time I was a lil kid. What kind of useless info I keep in my head instead of something really important. What's with that?

Re: Re: Re: Phones

Susan, what was our (Shill) phone # according to that phone book? Let's see, that'd be the 1965 book? I used to know it by heart. But I do not recall dialing any prefix number before the actual number.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Phones

Bobby,
What I have is a booklet given to the students, it lists first Seniors, then Jrs and then Sophomores.
It has a "Yellow Pages" section listing Student Body Officers, Varsity Cheerleaders, Supreme Court, Senate, House of Representatives, Tiger Tales Staff, Annual Staff, Senior, Junior and Sophomore Class Officers, Honor Society Officers, Majorettes, FHA Officers, FTA Officers French and German Club Officers. But no teachers. Sorry,

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Phones

We bought our house 12 years ago, it was Lester Ortins old place, was built in the late 1800's. The old phone was still here, can you believe that? On the dial you can still read the juniper and then the phone number. It was a party line to what was Malone Koelch's off when he was across from Jovial Jerrys bar. We couldn't get long distance for the longest time because we were still hooked up to a party line that is no longer. The phone company had to go threw the old files to find out where the party line was and disconnect it. I still have the old phone, sure is heavy, lol. I just had to keep it for my grandkids to see.

Re: Phones, kids

Interesting story, Loree. btw, how is that cutie-pie granddaughter of yours who earned the hula hoop at the reunion picnic (and does she still have it? I still have mine!)

Re: Re: Phones, kids

That is so funny Iny, she is fine, and yes she still has the hola hoop, the only difference is that now she can work it. lol Did any of those pictures turn out? I would really like the one of Phil and I, and one of Ashley with us.

She is still impressed that I have so many life long friends. Everytime she makes a new friend she asks if the new one counts
