Sugar Shack

Actually, I was delighted to find among my HS memorabilia an original poster advertising the opening night of the Sugar Shack. No year was mentioned, just the date. Anybody remember exactly what the year was? Also, as I remember, it was just The Sugar Shack before Gary took over, right?

All I remember is...

Jimmy Gilmer And The Fireballs

There’s a crazy little shack beyond the tracks
And ev’rybody calls it the sugar shack
Well, it’s just a coffeehouse and it’s made out of wood
Expresso coffee tastes mighty good
That’s not the reason why I’ve got to get back
To that sugar shack, whoa baby
To that sugar shack.

There’s this cute little girlie, she’s a’workin’ there
A black leotard and her feet are bare
I’m gonna drink a lotta coffee, spend a little cash
Make that girl love me when I put on some trash
You can understand why I’ve got to get back
To that sugar shack, whoa baby
To that sugar shack, yeah honey
To that sugar shack, whoa yes
To that sugar shack.

Now that sugar shack queen is a’married to me, yeah yeah
We just sit around and dream of those old memories
Ah, but one of these days I’m gonna lay down tracks
In the direction of that sugar shack
Just me and her yes we’re gonna go back
To that sugar shack,
Whoa uh oh
To that sugar shack, yeah honey
To our sugar shack

Re: Sugar Shack

Hey Iny...this is a couple of months since you posed the question about the Sugar Shack....we don't remember the year it opened or if the name was originally just the Sugar Shack, but I do remember way back then Gary telling me that he never made any money off of it to speak of, but he just wanted a place for kids to dance and have fun. It gave small-town kids something to look forward to on the week-ends. We mostly have fond memories of a much more innocent time, looking forward to a place to hang out at and dance, but do you remember the time (I believe it was Christmas vacation of '65/'66) when a stabbing occurred... I believe there was a boy from back East who was visiting a family on Base who did it? It seems to me some "heroic" boys from the Class of '66 were able to surround him and get the knife away even before the police came. It was such a frightening night, I will never forget it!!
