| An American Story - Lt. Colonel "Bobby Moore" |
Rate It!
****
|
| This is where a story about a boy who grew up in rural Iowa should tell about happy, wholesome small-town life, about fishing in farm ponds and sipping sodas at the corner drugstore. The corner drugstore indeed was central to the life of Robert Ross Moore, the second of three sons of Ross and Jessie Moore. Ross owned a drugstore on the town square of Villisca, about 75 miles southeast of Omaha. His sons tended the soda counter. But Villisca in the early 1900s didn't provide an idyllic rural life, not for the Moore family. During the night on June 10, 1912, when Bob was 7, someone took an ax and killed his uncle, aunt, four cousins and two visiting children. Read his story here. | |

| Bowman & Brown is an acoustic based duo performing a blend of folk rock music reminiscent of the 70s. With percussion hinting of Steely Dan and harmonies like the Everly Brothers, Bowman & Brown give a new twist to a popular genre. Their writing has been compared to that of Jackson Brown and Neil Young with wide ranging demographic appeal. Jeff Brown is Darwin's nephew and contributed to the Haunting Villisca soundtrack with titles such as "The Ballad of JB Moore." | |

| Cityview 02/16/2006 "Villisca, Nearly a century later, the worst massacre in Iowa history remains in the public consciousness" | Rate It! |
| Today, an ongoing interest still exists for those events that took place so long ago, brought on perhaps by the grisly nature of the crimes or perhaps because it remains an unsolved mystery. A documentary film, several books, a gaggle of paranormal investigation teams and an upcoming feature film on the matter, have all kept the Villisca axe murders in the public consciousness. And nobody knows that better than Villisca, a spectacle of a town that is, in many ways, still trying to heal and that in many ways remains divided on how to handle all of the notoriety brought on by an event everyone would obviously prefer had never happened to begin with. | |

| It came together so quickly. On a whim, we contacted Carol and Darwin Linn, the owners of the Olson-Linn Museum and Villisca Axe Murder House three hours away in Villisca, Iowa, to book an overnight visit to the house. Ten people got in on the trip, well aware of the history of the house. No matter how educated we were, nobody knew what was going to happen in this house. Read our story here. | |

| "Everyone's Dead" - Court TV Crime Library | Rate It! |
| Villisca, Iowa, was a small but flourishing town along the railway during the early 1900s — in contrast to its isolated existence today. Once popular and busy, it's now described as somewhat forlorn. In 1912, Villisca's residents numbered about 2500, according to several official sources, so when an unexpected massacre occurred on June 10, it became a major news story that lasted quite a while. In fact, despite citizens' concerns that speaking about it lacks taste, it's still remembered today with a museum, tours, documentaries, and books. | |

| Perhaps it wasn't the wind that slammed the door shut or there really is no one to match the footsteps down the hall? Or maybe it is a great marketing ploy for bed and breakfast inns and historical societies? Or maybe people are comforted or enjoy the idea of hauntings? Okay, so not all of us believe in ghosts, but the stories and histories behind many haunted homes can be just as unique as their "spiritual" residents. For a little fun and change of pace, we have compiled a short list of famous haunted homes and buildings in America. Dim the lights, sit back and enjoy a little Halloween-flavored fun and learn a little history too! | |

| To be sure, the nearly century-old still-unsolved southern Iowa murder spree is one of the creepiest, compelling episodes in the history of the state, and the fact that more Iowans, particularly in the western part of the state, don’t know about this case is evidence of a breakdown in the teaching of Iowa history. | |

| The following newspaper articles, from newspapers all over the country, detail the brutal murder of a Montgomery co. family & their houseguests in 1912, the hunt for their killers and several 'questionable' confessions. I don't believe the actual murderer was ever apprehended & brought to trial, but don't know for sure. I came across mention of the murders and found the entire case intreguing, but I have no further information. Just wanted to share what I found. | |

| Psychic Jive - A Haunting Mystery ~Ghosts of the Villisca Axe Murder House | Rate It! |
| If even a fraction of the stories circulating about this place were true, I reasoned when I first heard about the so-called “Villisca Ax Murder House”, then this would have to be one of the most haunted places in America. The history of the place certainly provided a possibility for the story of the haunting to be true --- but was it? I would find that out for myself in May 2005, when I hosted an overnight stay at this legendary house. What happened that night, which was detailed in the book So, There I Was, made me a believer when it comes to the ghosts of this eerie old house. | |

| Villisca is the site of what was arguably one of the most notorious unsolved murders in US history. On June 10, 1912, six members of the Moore family and two young houseguests were killed with an axe by an unknown assailant. The case has inspired two published books - Roy Marshall's Villisca and Stephen Bowman's fictionalized Morning Ran Red. Several motion picture projects were also made, including an extensively researched award-winning historical documentary by Kelly and Tammy Rundle entitled Villisca: Living with a Mystery [1], released theatrically in 2004, with national DVD release in 2006. The case has also inspired a feature narrative project entitled Haunting Villisca [2], co-authored by James Serpento and Kimberly Busbee, directed by Serpento and produced by Busbee for AriesWorks Entertainment. Haunting Villisca combines a fictionalized present-day scenario with scenes suggested by courtroom transcripts, folklore and current paranormal investigations of the house where the murders occurred. The picture premiered in Villisca in the spring of 2008, and will soon be available from Digital Shadow Films and Sneak Eye Pictures. | |
