Building Portable Battery Powered Ipod Speaker

I'd like to build a self contained speaker in a surplus military first aid kit box to be used to listen to my mp3 player on the beach. I was thinking I'd cut a circle out of the case and mount a speaker. I'm looking to make this a one way speaker unless I can do two way while remaining power efficient. The setup will be powered by a rechargable battery so quick energy drain would be pretty bad. What speakers should I use? I was also considering not using the box as a enclosure and not using an enclosure if using it as an enclosusure doesn't increase quality. It would be nice if the speaker got fairly loud too but I understand that I'm asking a lot for a small, battery powered unit.

Thanks for any help and suggestions you can offer.

Here is a case I was considering:

Re: Building Portable Battery Powered Ipod Speaker

Yes, you can run your iPod speakers on rechargeable batteries conveniently. Try to search for the best lithium Ion rechargeable battery manufacturer. Rechargeables are not only more money than single-use rechargeable batteries plus charge, but the price of a quality charger may negate their value altogether depending on use. Another potential problem with rechargeable batteries is that they can often become weak and unpredictable with age.
