PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED RADIO SESSIONS FROM THE CLASSIC IDLE RACE LINE-UP Formed from the ashes of Birmingham s Nightriders (formerly featuring Roy Wood) The Idle Race were christened sometime in early 1967. Well received by the music press for their melodies, whimsical lyrics, and inventive production, the band were championed too by DJs John Peel and Kenny Everett, but despite critical respect and famous admirers such as The Beatles and Marc Bolan, Idle Race failed to catch fire with the public. They did however release two classic albums and a raft of superb singles on Liberty while Jeff Lynne was a member, and a further LP in 1971 after he had left (ironically, to join Roy Wood in the Electric Light Orchestra.) The Idle race also recorded many radio sessions for John Peel s Top Gear programme on the newly formed Radio One, and this CD features seven such sessions recorded between 1967 and 1969. Including alternative versions of many of the group s most famous songs, plus a few cover versions (such as Marc Bolan s Debra and Frantic Desolation , originally composed and recorded by San Francisco s Sopwith Camel), the 19 tracks included form a quite extraordinary rarities collection of this oft-forgotten late-1960s act. Released here for the first time, this compilation will prove a delight for fans of Idle Race, of Jeff Lynne and of classic 1960s Beatlesque pop music in general.

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

I noticed this on Tuesday morning while sniffing about on amazon... no track list at that point and obviously a bootleg (Leftfield Media?). But I've been a rabid Idle Race fanatic since 1974 when a fourteen year old version of myself purchased Imposters of Life's Magazine on Daffodil Records - because I liked the album cover.

My finger hit the pre-order button without hesitation!

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

These are cool versions to have if you’re an Idle Race fan.

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

I hope you people who pre-ordered this have an idea of what you will probably get. I have had this collection of the BBC John Peel recordings for a while. I don't expect the CD released tomorrow will be any different[identical tracklists] and is most likely a CDR [not a CD] just of a folder found on the internet, made into discs and sold on for a fast buck. There are other radio sessions and live TOTP recordings omitted from the 'CD'.
Hope I'm wrong, pop pickers!

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

Yes, I'm well aware that this is a bootleg - as I mentioned in my earlier post. Leftfeild Media's profile on discogs plainly states it: "Issues semi legal releases using a hole in the European copyright laws concerning recorded public broadcasts."
But I am quite certain it's a factory produced CD - not a CD-R - and though I'm not expecting a booklet of any kind (that would be a surprise!), at least the cover art appears to be a nice high resolution shot!

As for the music held within, no I'm not expecting to hear anything I haven't already got. As I also mentioned, I've been a fan of the band for forty five years, and I've had all of these recordings and more since Nov. 30, 2007 (I just checked my files Ha Ha!)

For me, it's just that having anything Idle Race makes me quite happy.
And until Rob Caiger gets all the bugs out of the mythical box set (which, according to Mr. Caiger is again a definite maybe: there has "Been some movement on that, the project has come back into favour with the new owners of the catalogue..."), this will do quite nicely.

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

Hahaha, I like the definite maybe bit, that pulls my chain..... LoL!! Yeh idle race absolute essential UK pop with a psych bent to some of it. I'd love to see a legit box set of this group, that would be awesome!! But since it's a definite maybe, I won't hold my breathe just like I didn't hold it for the iveys set that was mooted about around 15 years ago. If I did I'd be dead now!!! I'm like Steve, I've saw this cd on Amazon but I'm always wary that it may sound like shit and even though it's only £10,that's a fair bit of money for me at the moment, so spending a tenner on something crap aint worth it for me at the moment, so hopefully someone can update us on here who does buy this if it sounds good or not. I'd thank you for that!! I bought the double cd back to the story when it first came out many years agoin 1996,has that set been upgraded in sound since it's original release? The one I have has the nightriders tracks, but I read the issues since that have omitted those tracks? Can anyone give me an update on that double cd!it really is essential but if the sound quality has been upgraded I'd very much like to know!! Thank you all very much!! Finally the third idle race album without Jeff Lynne time is, is in my opinion an under rated wee gem of an album and yes a totally different beast from the previous 2.but still none the less way above average in my opinion and sadly seems to be a tiny wee footnote in UK pop history. Please listen to it more, the more you hear it the more you really start to appreciate it!! There that's my tuppence worth!!

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

Well guys, those of you that pre-ordered this CD will have had it a while now. I'm curious to hear how the sound quality is.

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

Anyone?
I'm still waiting for mine here in Canada... supposed to be here by the 23rd, but stuff usually arrives much quicker than the forecast two and a half weeks amazon.uk gave me this time. Hopefully I'll have it for the long weekend coming up!

Re: Jeff Lynne & The Idle Race - The Lost Radio Sessions CD

...and wishes sometimes do come true.
I'm just finishing my first listen and overall I'm quite pleased with it. The sound quality isn't bad at all when one considers theses songs were recorded for BBC Radio from '67 to '69. The only exceptions being two of the covers 'Frantic Desolation' and 'Debora' - '(Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree' sounds just fine.

The packaging isn't anything to write home about, plastic jewel case with a two panel insert (the text is what we've already read in the description on amazon).

Amusing side note: "No part of the package or artwork may be reproduced without the written consent of Leftfield Media"
In other words, don't bootleg my bootleg!
