I took an interested with telephone switching equipment after a recent long-distance call to my sister from the States to Cuba. Placing the call took over a minute and for a majority of that time, I thought something was broken and the call wouldn\'t complete. According to Jenni at AT&T, \"Unfortunately, A large majority of Cuba still uses telephone switching equipment from 50s and 60s; possibly a system known as step-by-step. Do you own a rotary phone?\". After a quick buy from a local antique shop, and a $0.79 service charge for dialing on the phone, I tried calling again. This time around It worked but I had to dial the number not once, but twice after the tone. What I found interesting after the tone, was the noises I heard every time I dialed. Ever since then, I\'ve been hooked on these strange sounds made by old switching equipment. |

Worked in CO on DOTC, 17C, PLSB, CXR PLSB circuit order. Worked for the best till Divesture. After that it became nothing but layoffs.. I was laid-off and came to work for as an installed for Lucent Tech and then Alcatel-Lucent. The offices and underground facilities in Ohio ,Indiana and Illinois have deteriorated very badly compared to the early days. No maintinence ti being done. Just sad. The main location at NORWAY,Ill and just a shell to pre-1984. The newer site at Plano (underground) is now the main site. Again it sad to see these great site are just fading away |

Surprised to see that the East Bay section has nothing about Oakland! I\'m trying to remember old Oakland exchanges - I was NEptune, I remember friends with LOckwood, KEllogg... what else? |

My father retired ATT. Started Dallas,Tx. \'56, transferred to Sweetwater,Tx. \'60 supervisor. Wrote you an email about the old building north of town still standing. Like a bomb-shelter. You don\'t have a pic of it. My father also advised with NASA during Apollo flights down in Houston. Knew when missile crisis stuff going on, Kennedy asassination. I spent time out there as kid. Amazing place. Great sight. |

Hello. I\'ve never worked with any telecommunications companies but, like you, I was fascinated by the structures since I was a kid and wanted to know more about them. Thank you for all of this. |

Part of the West Valley District NTEC and Reseda, CA frame 1980-87, got the \"early retirement\" offer in 87, moved to AZ and started a new career in IT. I miss the wire wrap, crossbar and # 4 ESS relay clacking sounds and the unhealthy fragrance of light machine oil, rosin core lead solder and hydrogen sulfide from the battery racks. |

Love the website. I have always thought the telephone to be the most amazing invention. I have given my phone an unofficial exchange name using my last name FUrman 0 -XXXX (last 4 removed for privacy). On another telephone related note, I have been making an online archive for funny answering machine greetings. www.noveltyansweringmachine.com |
