KYOS Merced, CA. Shortly after going to work as \"combo\" man at KYOS in 1958, I was on the air doing what DJ\'s do one afternoon. I had all of my records (45\'s and 78\'s) all cued up and ready to throw the switch. The Mutual-Don Lee Radio network news ended as I opened the \"mike\" and introduced the next tune. I flipped the turntable switch and heard nothing but silence. I turned to look at the turntable behind me and to my right. I had obviously forgot to put the tone arm on the record. In a muffled utterance, with the mike on, I said \"Oh ----!\" Afterward I worried that someone would call to complain, perhaps my boss, but I was lucky. No one called! Probably, no one was listening. Alabama As a teenager in the early sixties, I was announcing at a local daylight 1KW station in a small town in Alabama. One afternoon I was reading a \"STAN-BACK\" headache power spot. It was supposed to say, \"No other product offers so much, no other product costs so little\". Of course, I got it backward. I didn\'t work there too much longer. Such are the perils of live on-air and kids. February 5, 2011 |

KYOS Merced, CA. When I worked at KYOS/Merced in the 80’s we had to read live commercials. I made the mistake of not proof reading a spot once. All I saw in the title was Oscar Meyer. Thinking it was about Oscar Meyer Wieners I started talking about Bar-B Q’ing. To my horror the spot was about bacon. Instead of admitting my error I tried to tell people how to Bar B Q bacon on a grill. What a disaster. I never lived that one down, but learned the hard way to pre-read live copy.
