I do need to ask a question if I may. I am still uimpiring high school baseball at 79. I\'m a little slow, can\'t see well but I do get the job done. I do not want to retire. I tried that and could not stay away. What my problem is my FEET. What size and make of shoe do you field umpires wear. I wear a 10 1/2 EEEE base and plate shoe. I do have a $40.00 pair of orthodics on a prescription by my doctor. My feet still crap like hell especially in later innings, it\'s my toes fellows. How about some clarity? Runner on 2nd no outs, batter hits fly ball to right field. The runner takes off to 3rd base and touches third base, the ball is caught by right fielder and the runner returns to second base but didn\'t retouch 3rd on his way back and beats the throw back to second. Question is does the defense have to appeal the runner not retouching 3rd base before returning to 3rd or can the umpire call him out on his own? |

Great info. I have a softball question. In our recreational league we had an instance where the bases are loaded and we have no infield fly rule. The batter hit the ball back to the pitcher with no outs. the pitcher threw the ball to first for the first out removing the force out on other bases. How would this rule? Does the first baseman have to step off the bag and back on to make the second out? Thanks. |

What is the ruling in fast pitch girls softball when a batter bunts a ball in the air and the ball spins back and hits her bat again and then the catcher catches the ball. |

QUESTION... There\'s a runner on 1st. The batter hits a slow ground ball. The fielder tries to get the force at 2nd. The play is a tie and the ump calls the runner safe. The runner comes off the back side of the base, while the fielder is still standing on the bag. The fielder doesn\'t notice though and the runner comes back to the bag without being tagged. The ump called the runner out because he still considered it a force out. I conteneed that once the runner was called safe, a tag was necessary to get the runner out. Who\'s right? |

Runners on 2nd and 3rd,one out.Batter hits pop up towards third base about 10 feet short of the bag.As the third baseman gets under the ball near the foul line but in fair territory, the runner bangs into him causing the fielder to miss the easy pop up completely. The ball lands fair short of the bag without ever being touched, and then rolls foul. The ball would have been caught easily. Is this a play where two outs are recorded;the batter and runner at third for interference? I appreciate your timely response Steve. |

We had a situation where bases were we had players on first and second. Batter hit and runner from second came around third and attempted to steal home. The hitters bat was left lying across the home plate where it had landed. The runner stealing home couldn\'t avoid the bat, skidding on it and the ump called him out. The player attempted to speak with the ump asking him who should have moved the bat (because he felt strongly - and rightfully so - that he would have scored). The umps response was that it was not his responsibility. Is it simply a courtesy that the ump keep the homeplate clear or was this ump wrong by making the comment that he did? |
